Super Tuna
Greetings, Anyone spent a quality amount of time with the Diablo Forged irons? I know they're a bit of an oldie, but I've gotten to spend some time with them this week and I have to say, I've been fairly impressed. I know there's a fantastic review over on WRX that Pete did of the various Callaway irons, but aside from that, what are people's take on them? Ice
Good iron for someone looking to try forged irons at their current price point. At the initial price point of a grand there are much better options IMO. RoverRick
These are basically an upgraded version of the Callaway X Tour (2006), which were Callaway's first forged club. I had a set of these briefly and really liked them. Callaway made these soon after the bought Hogan, and I really thought that was the direction they would go, but instead they hired Roger Cleveland and went a different direction. We did not see these again untill the Diablo Forged. I did not hit these but they were very similar to the X Tours but with wilder graphics. I would bet they were very nice irons. Softness of forged, forgiveness of cavity back perimeter weights, I think they have minimal offset, plus thin face and strong lofts. If you can get past the graphics they are probably a great iron. GolfSpy WD
Tried them and hated them. I think there are much better options out there. As I remember, these felt like a cast club @GolfSpy_WD
apprenti23
They feel like hybrids when you hit them and boy are they long! I played them for a year and then played them for three rounds this year as they are my current gamers. Extreme forgiveness in a forged iron. Not nearly as workable as most forged irons but I'd consider these to be game improvement forged irons. Stupid easy to hit and crazy long!
Super Tuna
Cheers guys! There's a set on for fairly cheaps and I'm eyeballing them fairly seriously. To me, they sort of seemed like a hybrid of the G20 and i20 set and every shot was just easy and felt like no work. I like that feeling some days while I'm golfing. furu
The best review you an get is how long clubs stay in someones bag. Everyone I know who has the Diablo Forged has stopped looking for new irons.
Super Tuna
Cheers RP/Furu. Sorted it out tonight, pic 'em up all freshly gripped and lie altered tomorrow morning with a round set for Sunday on my favorite course. Should be fun! SPY VIP The Dansome Posted October 6, 2012 SPY VIP Share Posted October 6, 2012 Didn't GolfTown have these on for $450 last week? PS: where is your fav course and do you need a 4th? Yo #JustPlayBetter Follow @GolfSpyMBP
Super Tuna
Or slightly less with some persuasion. Sorry, the round was over in Victoria, didn't think you would want to take the ferry over (had to go see the inlaws for Turkey day. Figured I'd throw in a round at the same time). Those Nippon's aren't bad but likely have to go. My Tempo's not fast, but I'm having a hard time gelling with them. Super Tuna
Cordova Bay. Love that course. Great staff, always good conditions and usually extremely friendly people to play with. If I lived in Victoria, I'd be all over membership there. Super Tuna
Tuna, have you played the irons yet? Greetings RP! Yup, took them out on Sunday and shot a decent score despite some tee sabotage and not getting the feel for the greens until late on. I quite like these. Nice feel of the face, decently large/forgiving head without being to large. I need to bend them a little flatter since I was having some hooking issues, espcially in the short irons but I think part of that is the Nippons. Nice shaft but missing that solid feel I like. I'll probably throw my standard SL's in there or PXi's and call it done. I know we're both Mizuno homers at heart, but I'm much more of a fan of these then the 825 Pro's. I think these puppies will be sticking around long term. Super Tuna
These irons are spicy, make no mistake. Newer = better? Pffffbt. I'm dead impressed with these irons. I wish Callaway had priced them a little nicer coming out of the gate because they seem to fulfil a niche that you don't really see anything else in (that's not JDM). Forged, poppy face. Sort of feels like the Pro Combo's in that the ball just rockets off the face. Hitting the irons feels very much like hitting a hybrid. So forged, yet with the forgiveness of a mainline GI club like the i20's. I've got some coloured ferrules and grips coming in for them so they can really stand out. Despite being an iron ho, I don't see these going anywhere for a good long while. They're just too easy to use. Super Tuna
No worries matey. On going experiment with them anyways, not so much with the results, but the looks. Though it's certainly a change from the Tournament Blades or even the Pro Combo's in terms of where I miss. I've had to do a bit of a rethink of some holes where water was in play before that isn't now or where sand wasn't before and is now. Three rounds in, even with ill fitting shafts and there's already been an average shot reduction of 4 strokes. I'll take that and run! Still trying out a couple of different irons shafts in them though. I find that I'm hooking the crap out of those Nippons in the short irons with too high of a ball flight as well (37 yard apex is way to high for me) so they have to go sooner or later. BK in TEXAS
Misses are different....... When I missed with the Miura, I rarely went offline and even when I did it was tiny. Instead I got a big distance loss of like 20%. Now, when I miss with the Diablo's, that 7 iron doesn't lose more then 5% of it's distance if that. Instead, the directionality of the miss is more suspect. Instead of dumping that shot in front of the green, I'm now more likely to pull that ball to the left of the green instead. Do you think that's due to the shafts or is that a typical GI iron problem? Super Tuna
Gotcha on the looks. What sorta bothered me was the "pocket" sticking out on the long irons. For me, that would take some adjustment. Yea, the shafts are critical, and while the Nippons are a nice shaft, I believe that they're made for the masses, or a "weaker" player, and them in combo with the carpenter steel face, I'm sure with your build & swing, you're gonna some high flyers. I know that I did..lol The best with 'em. Lemme know what shafts ya settle on. Take Care, Richard Fairways & Greens 4ever Entirely understand there with the cavity looks in the longer irons. That being said, it doesn't bother me because I don't use them . I'm entirely a hybrid guy. I hit them better then long irons, better then fairway's and I'm willing to bet if they made me an 11 degree one or so, probably better then my driver. No idea what it is, they just work for me. Looks like it's going to be either the DG SL's or the DG Tour Issue's. I liked the PXi's in them but there was still too much height. Really, the DG TI's are better number wise but I just hate swinging a shaft that heavy. Between them and heavier woods, I'm tired by the end of the round. I suspect, just due to comfort I'll stick with the SL's. Do you think that's due to the shafts or is that a typical GI iron problem? For me, that's a GI problem. My experience with more GI irons is that I miss directionally more then I miss distance wise. Catching it thin with the DF's hardly does anything distance wise, same with toe shots. Instead I find that I miss more laterally (combo between the shaft, the iron design and my terrible alignment). It's held true for me across the DF's, RBZ's and AP2's. The Miura's were definately more distance loss. The Nike Pro Combo's seemed more about distance loss then direction as well. As happy as I am with the DF's so far, I also break out the Nike's when I get to play more. They're still my favorite irons ever when I'm in the groove, at least from 5-PW.
