Recently this little gem passed through my hands and I thought it fitting to share some photos with you. This Byron Morgan Epic Day comes from Dave at Byron Putters personal collection. Here are the specs:

  • Manufacturer: Byron Morgan
  • Model: Epic Day
  • Metal: Carbon Steel
  • Finish: Copper Plating
  • Neck: Long Pipe, full offset
  • Face: Tuna Milling
  • Toe Hang: about 4:00

Impressions

Byron makes amazing putters. Matt did a great job reviewing the Epic Day a little while back (HERE). I have always had an affinity for the Zing style of head, and I have owned quite a few of them (Redwood Zing, Laguna 1.5, Laguna 2, Odyssey TiHot 2, & etc.). This is by far this nicest example of this head shape that I have ever rolled. It's difficult to pin down why though, so I'll just list out the likes:

  • The copper finish with its patina is beautiful. It's bright, but non-glare producing.
  • The neck matches my stroke. The other Zings just always seemed to fight my natural stroke a bit. This long pipe is great, and if not, Byron can bend these to match your specs.
  • The impact is dense, but responsive. That sounds strange, but the feel off the face is different with this putter. Maybe it's the thickness of the face. The impact feels rich and dense to me. No click, more of a deep resonance. In no way am I saying it's a dead face or dull impact. It is just a lower frequency sort of boom.
  • The lack of alignment graphics. I am not a huge fan of lines, rather aiming with the squared face and features of the metal head. If you want a line or dot, Byron can add one, or both.

Anyway, enough chatter. Check out these photos. If you want to know more, then head over to Byron's site HERE. Next time, I have a crazy copper belly putter to share.

Dave, I am glad to read that you enjoyed the putter during its stay with you. The kind words regarding Byron's craftsmanship are appreciated. This will likely be my winter putter as the greens here go dormant and slow down. It's higher MOI will be useful in getting the ball to the hole. For me the putter sets up perfectly. I have a lot of confidence when this one is in the bag. Thanks again!

I would love to see what this finish looks like after a year of play. I'm guessing it just gets better with age. Much like I do.

It will probably look the same as I prefer the look of fresh copper. I have a bottle of copper polish and a shammy to keep it looking like new. If I were not inclined to keep it like that this one looks as if it will patina with a lot black in it.

The finish kind of reminds me of Yamada's burning copper.
