bent my Mizuno's

I had my MP-53's bent yesterday to match my other irons...

 

5 iron from 27* old yardage was 145-155 to 24* new yardage s/b.....155-165

6 iron from 30* old yardage was 135-145 to 27* new yardage s/b.....145-155

7 iron from 34* old yardage was 125-135 to 31* new yardage s/b.....135-145

8 iron from 38* old yardage was 110-120 to 35* new yardage s/b.....120-130

9 iron from 42* old yardage was 98-107 to 40* new yardage s/b.....105-118

PW from 46* old yardage was 90-100 to 45* new yardage s/b..........95-105

 

Total cost was $3 per club.....for $18

Looks like your gapping is much more consistent, and should be easier to figure when pulling clubs lol.

Have you hit the irons on grass since you bent them? I'd be curious if you can feel any difference in the turf interaction.

Not off grass yet....the closest range has really sh*#@y grass.

It has to have a REAL side effect, maybe not a FEEL side effect.

I would have to imagine that a better player would be able to notice a little more then a mid to high handicap, but that is a guess.

 

1) With 1* change of loft you get roughly 1* of change in bounce. Example 3* stronger loft aprox. -3* in bounce, -2* in loft aprox. +2* in bounce

2) if the bounce is less the effective leading edge and turf interaction has to dig a little more. If the bounce is slightly more then the club should glide a little easier

 

 

I am personally against jacking up the lofts on irons not only for what it will do to turf interaction (most time negative side effect of digging) but most people don't hit enough greens already what good is another 10 yards if you miss even one more GIR per round?

I, myself, am guilty of talking about turf interaction and bounce and how I may like the feel of this particular iron or lately, the turf interaction of fairway metals etc... However, in this case we are talking about bending them 3* more thus reducing the bounce by 3*. This is the same as if you move your hands 2 inches forward at impact. This changes the effective loft approximately 3* and the bounce a corresponding amount. (Perhaps reciprocal is a better word)

 

Just for the record, moving your hand 3" forward increases the loft by 4.6*. Also let us say that you have a hand position that is 3" back of center at impact (this is something I discovered about my old swing last year.) if you move your hands 3" in front of the ball at impact than you are changing the effective loft a whooping 9.2*. So by moving my hand position at impact from 3" behind the ball, to 3" ahead of the ball I gained 10 yards by that alone. I actually gained closer to 30 because I was no longer casting, I was making center of face contact, blah, blah, blah.

 

Does this have any effect on the turf interaction? I do not think that I am good enough to feel if it does on a full swing. Yeah, I can use the bounce on partial and wedges shots, yeah, I can feel the difference in a Ping wedge with 18* bounce and a Titleist with 7*. Can I feel the difference between a 5 iron with 3 and one with 0? It is the same as moving my hands forward at impact, can you feel the difference then? If so, does it matter to you?

Took them to an outdoor range yesterday after work....

 

I started with the PW and worked my way slowly (10 balls each) tdown to the 5 iron.

 

With yardage markers at 100, 150 & 200, it appears that I am now getting the yardage yhat I wanted from the change. I understand the change in bounce. As long as I am able to strike the ball correctly, I don't think there will be ab issue. However, when I am on a thin lie, there will probably be a few issues with less bounce.

 

Anyway, it was less costly to have them bent than to buy another set.

I've had lofts bent before but never 3* - I've had them bent to even out distance gaps between my longest iron and my shortest hybrid and my sand wedge and my gap wedge.

 

I have my mizuno's pre bent to offset the gap betweent he shortest JPX 825 and the longest 825 Pro but it's only a degree on two clubs.

 

My current 6 iron is bent 2 degrees strong to even the gap with the 5 hybrid - I really haven't noticed any difference in turf interaction but I'm a 2/3 - If I were better I might. I've just always been told that 2 degrees was the max you should go. I'm still shocked at 3.
