Neck Talk

To be honest, I'm not a putter aficionado but there are plenty of VERY knowledgeable folks on this board that are.

Can someone explain the differences between the different kinds of necks on putters? A lot of terms are thrown around (plumber, rincon, etc.) but I'm not afraid to admit I don't always know the difference.

Great description. Some makers may have their own names for them, but those are the basics. If you putt with the different neck styles, hold the putter in your palm and see where the toe of the putter points to. This would be the toe hang. PLacing it on a table with the head hanging over will work too. You may find that one of the necks really creates a hang that suits your stroke.

Me, for example, I like a little bit of toe hang, 4 o'clock or so with 3o'clock being face balanced. This is why my Cameron of choice is the Tel3 Newport longneck, although it is closer to face balanced. While I like the look of the Cameron Del Mar 3.5, the hang is almost 6 o'clock and i find the putting is just not as successful.

This is sort of why I was surprised to like the feel of the iWi zing. Lots of toe hang there, but the stroke felt smooth and was productive.

try a lot of models and take note of the neck that works.

So, obviously my Scotty Newport has a plumbers neck. That was easy. How about the Abaco? Flare-Tip? I've never heard that term before. What do other putter makers call it?

Flare tip, or what Byron would call a rincon neck. although on the Abaco the neck is longer and larger than a typical rincon.

hang on that is probably almost straight down while the newport is less at about 5 o'clock...

What's been posted so far is excellent, I'll try to add a bit to it:

The neck in picture #2 (referring the GolfSpy's Link) is known as a flow neck (generic/Betti), Sante Fe neck (generic/Scotty), .5 neck (Scotty), Rincon neck (Bryon).

Byron also does round necks (pic #3) and center shafts (#6). He also does standard plumbers necks and his DH89 neck, which is a softer plumber's neck.

Thanks Matt. That helps a bunch. It gets really confusing with all the companies using different terminology.

Is that the bigger neck like on the Abaco?

There are general shape types and names.

Mid-Slant

Plumbers

Pretty much everyone uses these names.

Then there are handmade type hosels.

No.9 Style (think Odyssey No.9 putter)

Santa Fe (Think Scotty Cameron Newport 1.5)

plus just about anything else.

The truly custom putter makers of the world(not just those that stamp and put a finish on them) can make any hosel you want. We have made tons of different shapes in different thicknesses different profiles. Basically if you have a putter with a neck you like tell us what it is and we will make that neck for you.
