GolfSpy Barbajo
Figured the title would get your attention... Was trying to explain to my wife why I have so many golf clubs in the house yesterday, and we got to talking about advertising. She's a disinterested non-partisan when it comes to clubs, so I whipped out a couple of copies of Golf and GD to look at ads. She was immediately drawn to all the TMAG ads -- loved 'em. Hated the Titleist ads and was so-so on the Callaway and Nike ads. On the R1 ads -- she liked how the graphics on the club, which were also prominent in the ad, made her thing of a golf swing. She liked Dustin Johnson, too. Said the ad looked like action and seemed more about playing the game as opposed to just showing F&B's of the club On the RocketBladez ads - same feeling - she liked that there was action going on, it seemed exciting. More pictures than words, but the words were meaningful when she read them. She liked the picture of Sergio, too (should I be worrying about this?" Titleist ads - extremely boring. Picture of the club, a couple of cutaways and a lot of text about the features & benefits. Didn't make her want to learn more. Nike - big picture of the Covert driver - as a novice she had no idea of the significance and there's was nothing there that would make her want to pay any attention to it. Callaway - this is where it got interesting. The picture of Phil didn't do anything for her (now I really need to worry - my physique is more Mickleson than Garcia), she thought it was too dark and still too wordy. Even though the shot of Phil was an action shot, it was too dark. She said golf is an outdoor game and the ads should be bright and focus more on the playing of the game rather than just the club. She thought Callaway's ads were way better than Titleist's or Nike's, but not nearly as eye-catching or as impactful as TMAG's. Visually interesting is way more important that statistics, facts and figures. Now if you'll excuse me, gotta go hit the gym and get rid of the man-boobs. GolfSpy Barbajo
Barbajo--what does your wife think of the Cobra ad on page 67 of the Mar 13 issue of Golf Digest??? I was a little unsure about sharing that one with her, but I figured "what the hell, you only live once." Surprisingly, she thought it was definitely eye catching, since sex gets your attention. But it was way too obvious - would have been even better if she was wearing just a little more while swinging a club. BTW -- took me about 15 to 20 careful views of the ad to figure out that A: it was for Cobra and B: it was for a contest to win a round of golf with Blair. Took a while to get to the text Opinions on the Ping multi-page ad -- WAYYYY to technical and too wordy. Seriously, has anyone bothered to actually read all the stuff in that fold-out ad? I've glanced through it but that's about it. Worst ad in the magazine - the Cleveland ad for The New Face of Spin. It's an essay in two-page ad form -- kinda like those 2-page disclaimers they include in the Viagra ads. Not that I've read them... EthanSterlingPrice
Could it also be a demographics thing? Taylormade and Cobra seem to push that younger flare more than all the other companies with titleist doing those kinds of ads the least. Players that Titleist at least traditionally has hooked don’t mind those ads while Taylormade is trying to get the younger crowd perhaps. Makes me think a little bit of a Phoenix open vs. Masters kind of feel.Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy tony@CIC 1 Quote Right Handed 4.5 handicap Driver: Nike Vapor Flex with Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki ZT60x5ct S-flex shaft and stock grip. 3-Metal: Nike VRS 15 degree with Mitsubishi Rayon tour issue Diamana S73x5ct X-flex shaft and GolfPride MCC midsize Black/White grip. Golfspy_CG2
Boy what a clickbait headline Interesting to read thoughts from 6 years ago on the advertising. I believe the timing of this post and the ad were about 6 months into the Harry Arnett and Hashtag Chad era of Callaway. So they were just getting going and Taylor Made was at or near its peak if it's big claims of 17 more yards and the White driver in the R1 etc. Then there was Nike perseveringgolfer and cnosil 2 Quote G430 Max 10K TSiR1 15.0 Aldlia Ascent 60g TSR2 18.0 PX Aldila Ascent 6og TSi1 20 Aldila Ascent Shafts R T350 5-GW SteelFiber I80 SM10 48F/54M and58K S159 48S/52S/56W/60B Select 5.5 Flowback 35" ProV1 Play number
