Bunker Preference Question

Here's the parameters.

 

Assume that you are playing a hole with a green that is surrounded by bunkers and that if you ended up in any of the bunkers, they would all be the same distance to the cup. So the other factors like green slope, lie, bunker shape are things you would have to consider.

My least favorite would be a back bunker based on the fact that most greens (at least in my area) are sloped back to front.

I chose back, for the reason that Matt stated. However on one specific hole, I'd chose a 'none of the above' option.

 

#4 at my home course is a 195yd par 3 with bunkers covering the right front and another bunker covering the back left. During tournament play, they put the pin about 5 paces on, right in between the front bunkers. It's a tough hole, except for when they put the pin front left.

I guess this is a no brainer for me - I picked front bunker under the assumption that the green slopes from back to front -

 

Regardless I'll take the up hill shot every time.

Uphill shot every time. I guess that means that any location is a correct vote, depending on the slope of the green.

Not really enough information to go on. It depends on the location of the flag not the location of the bunker, and of course the lie. I chose side bunker because, my course has side bunkers. While water is short on 5 holes, there are often moguls long but typically two bunkers on each side, if there is no water there.

 

Front bunkers tend to plug but on the upslope.

 

Rear bunkers the ball is usually sitting up and you often have a flat lie or at least a good stance.

 

Side bunkers the ball bounces and can end up anywhere. Since you were probably aiming at the pin you are short sided, the tend to either plug or roll to the other side of the bunker where you have a down hill lie to a short pin, and often it is near the edge of the bunker so you have a crazy stance.

Honestly my favorite would be a 40 foot bunker shot up a slight incline from a slightly uphill clean lie but if I were good enough to get that shot every time I'd be good enough to hit it on the green and skip the bunker.

 

I actually don't mind a slight burried lie if the shot is uphill to a pin that's far enough away - I thought I read that it was the same distance regardless of which bunker you selected. The bunker shot that I really hate is down hill lie to a down hill green - throw in a high lip and it's all over for me.

Least favorite is downhill lie, with green sloping away, and lip in front that you have get over. That's the one when you take your medicine and aim for the least amount of trouble, and try to get out of the bunker on the first shot, or you try to pull off the shot of the century, and, well, we all know how that ends.
