How to hit Tiger's Stinger?

So the correct club, setup and swing would be:

3i , Ball about 2 balls behind middle, grip 1-2 inches down on club,

weight on left leg.

Then the swing would be steep up on the back swing, hit down steep on the inside quadrant of the ball.

Is this correct ?

I put it two balls back, grip down an inch, take a regular backswing and then just drive with hips. I don't turn my hands over and try and square the club face with my hip turn. The ball comes out low and is usually straight and sometimes has a 5 yd fade.

It's almost similar to Phil's hinge and hold method for flops.

I hit it with a 2U utility iron (TMag's 2009 Tour Van version) currently. Have hit it with just about anything though, this is just the easiest thus far. I play it much deeper in my stance and focus on trying to REALLY compress the ball between the clubface and the turf. It comes out no more than 25 yards high and just GOES forever. It's a good 245 yard shot off the tee for me.

To me a "stinger" is a word announcers have coined for Tiger Wood's low trajectory knock down shot off the tee box. I think the word came about because of how much club head speed / ball speed tiger has to be able to hit a ball on a low flat trajectory without ballooning the ball. It looks like a low bullet flying through the air, the sound probably has a nice smack to it thus "sting" the ball or "stinger" was born.

Tiger Woods talks about control his trajectory with where his hands finish at the end of the swing.

LOW ~ hands finish near the rips as low as possible it's sort of a cut off follow through

MEDIUM ~ Hands finish near the shoulders and has a nice full follow through

HIGH ~ Hands finish way over the head and has a nice full follow through

I already talked about hitting a knock down shot on this website almost a year ago now:

http://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/5831-knock-down-shots/

Some of the stinger is more full swing then in the video I posted in that thread but same basic concepts really just a little faster, longer swing.

LOL! BLading a lob wedge doesn't go as far tho

Well that depends on who is hitting the blade wedge in comparison to the person hitting the pure shot, here is kind of a comical video, towards the end he hits a 29" driver and a Putter

How to hit Tiger's Stinger?

I'm assuming the reference to "stinger" means the low shot he hits from time to time that rifles the ball down the fairway and not the tree he hit on that infamous night?

That hit tree was a result of Elin's stinger

I hit a low stinger with 4iron, between trees and under trees... ball landed at the back of the green at only 180 yards though... and the ball didn't fly higher than my waist level.

So I guess I didn't hit it strong enough

Why would you say that?

The object is to put it on the green, which you did.

To go between trees & under trees and have it stop on ANY green is a hell of a shot.

I don't give a sh*t what club ya use!

Not strong enough?

:mizuno-small:

I overshot the green actually... couldn't make it stop. It rolled to the back.

Hmmm... I didn't think it's strong enough because doesn't it suppose to increase in height and goes much further?

I thought I saw Tiger's ball went pretty high compared to mine.

Maybe I'm not understanding, and I'm not trying to be cute, however the object is to put the ball in the hole. To do that means to put the ball on the green. To do that when you have to, in your words, "go between and under trees" is a hell of a shot, even if ya land on the back of the green.

It's not like ya practice that shot so yea, if the 4i ends up on the back of the green or the back apron, does it mean that you try a 5i or do ya just choke down 1-1 1/2" and take 8-10yds offa the shot? You may not be able to keep the 5i down, so chokin down might be the best move.

Obviously, you've played the game a while, so ya know that it's about puttin the ball in the hole in as few as strokes as possible, by any leagal means neccessary.

It's not about bullsh*t stories, about bullsh*t shots that forum "phenoms" throw around like 280yd drives.

Sounds like ya hit a hell of a shot.

If your next stroke was taken with a putter, then ya definitely hit a great shot!
