Addicted2Golf
For wedges, there are three finishes I'm considering for a new set - satin chrome, black pearl, and oil quenched. I've always played Ping wedges where those finish options aren't available so I'm struggling with the decision on which finish to go with. I know its largely personal preference but I thought I would put the question out there anyway. What finish do you prefer and why? What are the pros and cons? Thanks! MmmmmmBuddy
I have a set of oilcan, and a set of black pearls. I prefer the look and wear pattern of the black pearl. The oil can requires too much maintenance from me to keep them looking pretty. jamo
I've got the black nickel on my Mizuno LW and the oil can on my Vokey SW. I prefer the oil can for the look, but don't think the rust will give you more spin, because of anything you will get less if you let the face rust. I always make sure to keep the face clean so it doesn't rust. I like when the back of the club gets all rusty though, that looks awesome.

I'm thinking you are talking about forged wedges. I have an old Ping stainless in tumble finish that suits me perfectly as we get near year round sun here and reflections can be very distracting to me. I like stainless because it is very long life and very low maintenance, being just a wash, brush and dry. Shambles

Moecat
For me, I think unfinished/raw works best: good contrast against the ball, no glare, no maintenance issues - and with wedges, pretty much any plating and finish wears off relatively quickly. Not the case with my Callaway wedges. I have played them since mid 2008, playing almost daily and they still look brand new with no wear at all to the finish. I'm guessing they have over 300 rounds played plus time on the range. I think the oil quench is just overheated stainless soaked in oil. I'm not entirely convinced the oil bath is needed, but if I understand it properly, you end up with a reasonably unique pattern that should be permanent. I first found my way to it by accidentally overheating some old stainless irons on my kitchen stove. It was just plain bad workmanship on my part. Matt Saternus
I've always liked my satin Vokey's, but I also liked the black TM wedge I had for a while. Given the choice, I'd prefer a darker wedge, but satin works for me too. Follow me on Twitter: @MattSaternus
Shambles
Shambles - I believe Cleveland uses 8620 Carbon Steel in their CG15 wedges. I have a CG 14 and it works well enough but not to my taste. I've retired it to CIC ( Crying In the Closet ) along with other clubs I may of may not go back to. I also had a 60* Cleveland that didn't feel right to me but I lent it out to someone who didn't return it. I'm fairly well off of Cleveland these days and into Vokeys. Cleveland can be made to work but they just don't feel right to me. Shambles

Dave
exactly... I do not take the time to care for my equipment like I should.... Bet you do a better job than I do. I keep the H/C on the driver and putter and thats about it. I pretty much never clean them. Wedge finshes, I'm a black pearl man, but that said out of the 4 wedges in my bag (inc PW), all 4 have a different finsh. Figure out the logic in that. I have a revolving WITB policy.
