I played yesterday and hole 2 I hit a nice low draw tee shot and had about 130 left. The green is uphill and you can't see where your ball lands, plus there was a slight head wind. I grabbed a little extra club and hit. The divot was at the front of the green and the ball was a foot away to the left of the hole. Tapped in for birdie. That was the best hole I've had in a while.

No specifically cool shots today, but rather a very clean day with the 4,5,6 irons.

Really pure hitting them for the last two weeks. Pured long irons feel really good.

Last month I chipped in on a par 4 for a birdie on one of the hardest holes of the course. Kicker was that it was during a member/guest event so with my handicap it was considered a net 1 for our groups score card. Now just need to get a legitimate ace...

New course for me, I joined as a matter of fact cuz they like old people..

Played ok. I he one hole that was a short par 4. So I teed a 5 iron, hit a 9 on. Then sunk a 30 footer that bent right about 90 degrees, so it was a monster banana putt and in dropped in like it was magic...

These greens are a lot faster than the other track I usually play on...

Nearly had a heart attack on this one.

2nd shot on a long par 4......187 out.

Back right pin tucked behind a bunker.

I hit a fade (that actually did what I wanted it to :o ) bounced once near the fringe.....kicked right....and started tracking to the hole.

8 more inches of roll and it would have dropped!

Don't ask me about the other 80 some strokes I took this morning

Sunday, on Number 5, a par 5, I stopped half way through the swing and fouled one off into right field. Actually, it was not right field but the far side of the 15th fairway. I was 385 or something like that to the green. I went first and looked at the green to find the flag. It was on the right side of the green. I go back to my ball and took aim and hit a perfect long iron...... to the left side of the correct fairway about 140 something out but on a great line to the flag. My next shot was a 9 iron that came to rest 6-8' from the flag and I made birdie.

None of those three shots were spectacular shots. They were solidly struck but normal golf shots. It was the ability to string them together and adjust the plan for the hole that is the biggest difference between my 2.6 index today and my 13.9 index from a year ago.

There were 5 of us playing, and we all hit terrible drives. Mine was by far the worst, but there was one birdie, two pars, and two bogies on the hole. Four of us were in the 15th fairway, but I was the only one who elected to hit the second shot so that I was coming back across the green to the flag.

I have played that hole twice since then and employed the same strategy. No more birdies, but I have had tap in pars. I am using this strategy more and more and am seeing the birdie opportunities actually increase.

Where did you play?

Sterling Hills in Camarillo....

Have you played there? Compared to Camarillo springs the greens were like carpet!

Plus being a senior and joining the preferred player club, it's actually a dollar cheaper with cart, only $32!

Ya I have played Sterling Hills quite a bit but I have never played Camarillo Springs, I have driven past it a few hundred times. LOL!

Sterling is a nice track although there marshals leave a bit to be desired. In my experience.

So I get to the 17th, uphill 430 yards #1 hardest hole. I hit my drive thin and the hill eats it up. So I'm 233 out, yuck.

Pull out the trusty Los sonartec and lasared it with a little baby draw. It lands about 10 feet short and runs all the way across and stops one foot past. The pin is middle front but all downhill. If I would have gone two feet less it would have rolled back down close to the pin. So, I promptly 3 putted for bogie, like I did on the last 3 holes for a solid 78.

Gahhhh

No complaints, getting used to new greens is tough on the card. They are lots bigger and lots of undulations. Very fun!

  • 2 weeks later...

Par 5' ok drive but I pulled it to left side on a tough hill angle. Hit my newly back weighted hybrid perfect to about 20 yds short.

Pulled out my brand new SCOR wedge.....uh I mean my old beat to crap vokey, and skulled the darn thing over the green. Grrrrr. I was hoping to cozy it up for a shot at the birdie. So now, again with my new SCOR, errrrr, my beat to crap vokey 60, out of rough on steep hillside, I chipped about one inch into the green, and a few hops and rolled it straight in for the birdie after all!

Love my new SCOR, errr that good old Vokey!

Made any really cool shots lately? No. Not today. I sprayed the ball all over the course and when I did hit greens I was not even close to the flag. I did not have a single chip or pitch that was noteworthy and made two putts more than 10 feet, but at the end of the round it was a 73. That was really cool to walk around feeling like I am not going break 90 and be that close to par.

I played 9 this morning and my goal was to really focus on my routine and be very focused. I hit many good shots today because they were the way I drew them up in my mind. I was particularly proud of 18. I had 129 in but it was uphill with a back pin and instead of hiting a full 9 iron. I backed off because it didn't feel right. Instead I hit easy 8 because I felt confident and it went like a laser and finished 5 feet behind the hole. what's crazy is the ball mark was about 3 feet on the other side. It had to have come very close to going in.

Also, the one thing I was unhappy with today was my chipping so I went to the chipping green with one ball my 64 and a putter. I hit to a different pin each time from different distances and different lies and since I didn't have much time I said I would practice till I got up and down 5 times putting everything. I made sure to follow my routine and visualization just like on the course. I felt really focused and got up and down my first 5 in a row. 4 were inside three feet and one was with a good 6 footer. I think these shots were great because of consistency. I'd rather have many decent shots or good shots strung together than a few spectacular ones mixed with bad.

It's all about the short game, unless you can't keep it in play!

Shot +6 front and +1 back. My normal un warming up crap...

My shots of the day were two long fairway sand shots onto the green, one for a kick in birdie, and one for a par. Both about 110 yards.

That's good for the score board...

I think it was Saturday morning when we were playing 3 on 2. 18 is an island green but at this time there is no water around it. Instead there is knee deep mud in some places and 6 feet tall grass in other places. I was on the 2 man team and had helped my partner find his ball and was the last to hit to the green. Two of the other team had already gone up to the green and were standing on the back of the green when I hit.

They were about 10 feet apart on either side of the flag but actually off the green. My ball was high and going right for the flag. I was thinking it was perfect and they were having a front row seat to the winning shot. I could see them tracking the ball with their head movements, so there was no reason to yell, plus I thought it would be short of them. My heart sank when it came down and disappeared behind the green into the hazard. I could see them turn their heads and look behind them into the hazard which is mud flats there right now.

And then I saw them turn their heads back up to the sky and track back to the hole and I saw my ball falling on the green and bouncing to a stop about 5-6 feet below the hole, and them throw their clubs in the air and start yelling about the shot. When I got to the green they told me it landed on a 6" diameter rock and bounced back onto the green and nearly went into the hole.

I will say that I have had more bad bounces than good but it is nice to have the good ones.

Played a 4 man scramble yesterday and ended on the 1st hole. Driving by the club house the low score of the day was 66 which is where we would be at with a par on our last hole. (I know not exactly low for a scramble, but the winds were crazy yesterday and there were effectively two par 3s that were not reachable for 95% of the field). On our last hole hit driver down the middle, wedge got hit by the wind and came up 30 feet below the hole. Rolled in the putt and posted 65 for the win. At my company winning and bringing home trophies makes my boss pay for more charity outings, so I like to win.

I was watching the golf channel and there was an instructional piece with Faxon talking about better chipping. One little section he talked about moving the ball up a bit in your stance and opening the face a bit with your 60* for a soft shot. On the 18th, I had about 20 yards up to a very tight pin. I knew I could do a regular chip, but that I either had to land it short and hope for a good hop out of the cucuya (sp?) grass, or just try to barely get on and hope for a short roll. So, I decided to give it a go. So close to left toe with feet pretty close together, and took a 1/2 swing. That ball just flipped up onto the green and stopped dead 2 feet past the pin for a tap in to save par after a blocked drive left me in the trees.

Thank you Brad Faxon for a great tip!

Played poorly today, but only 27 putts, thanks to 3 chip ins. Saved my scorecard for sure. One from about 30 yards, two others from the fringe. Many others close. Thank goodness cuz I could nt git the green to save my life...

Awesome WJ, congrats!

Hit a couple of really good flop shots lately. One from 30 yds over a bunker to drop at the pin tucked close. Saturday I was 15 yds left of the pin and about 5 feet below the green. Trouble was there was about a 15 foot high tree between the ball and the hole. Another perfect flop over the tree for a tap in par save. Love it when a plan comes together.
