  1. I'll gauge the number of balls I need based on how much water and trees a course has. I don't recall losing more than a couple of balls in a round so I carry no more than 10 balls as I walk with push cart and want to keep it light. I do find more balls than I lose so I have to clean the bag of balls every month or so. A couple of decades ago, I played the beautiful Ko'olau golf Club in Hawaii. At the time, they claimed to have the highest slope rating in the entire USA! They recommended golfers take the same number of balls as their handicap! I may have lost more than 2 balls that round!
  2. Been there, done that! We have 2 sons. When the first was born, my wife stayed home (total of 16 yrs) to raise him and the second one. Not only did we have to budget our time, we had to budget our money! With less disposable cash, I cut back to 3-4 rounds per month, if lucky, as the priority is all about family. To scratch the golf itch, I was fortunate enough that I really enjoy chipping and putting. I would find an hour or so to do that, and on occasion, a golfer might leave half a bucket of balls on the driving range...score!! My oldest son developed a love for the game, so he would chip and putt as well. Turns out, we both have very good short games. My last game in Phoenix, I was able to chip and one putt 8 times to salvage a 79. All that chipping and putting paid off! As the kids became independent and my wife went back to work, my number of games per week increased. I'm now retired and play 4-5 times a week. Life is good, accept and enjoy all chapters of it!
  3. 21 years ago when my son started golf lessons he naturally trended towards left hand due to the influence of hockey. The instructor wanted to start him out right handed but I also played hockey and was left handed. I said let's keep him left handed if it feels natural to him and I can pass down my clubs to him. Now that my son is older and making good money, he is often experimenting with new equipment, therfore, I now get his hand-me-downs at a very "reasonable" price! I have his Vokey 54 and 58 degree wedges. I've decided the grooves, especially on the 58, which is also my sand wedge, are worn and I don't get the same predictable bite chipping onto the greens. My son has 56 and 60 degree wedges so I had to buy my 58 at a store! Found my same 58 K 14 Vokey at Golftown Canada on sale! Next purchase will be a golf bag. My son has 3 Vessel golf bags but I don't see him parting with one of them anytime soon. So, I'm looking for a great sale on either a Vessel or Ghost bag next. I'm certainly not getting any Malbon pants like the ones Jason Day is wearing at the Masters! So ugly! He must be getting paid a lot to wear those!

  5. I retired 3 yrs ago and purchased a membership at a nice local golf club. Although, I would not consider myself an ultra competitive person, I like to participate in some of the friendly league play and the odd tournament. In order to do this, I have to enter my scores into the WHS to establish a handicap index. Scores can be entered by total score or hole by hole. As mentioned in this thread, maximum score per hole is "net double bogey" but I am afraid a lot of people don't know this rule or choose to ignore it (some would call cheating) leading to an inflated handicap. Some have told me they can't be bothered to adjust the score when entering total score. When entering hole by hole, the adjustment is automatically done for you. If everyone had to enter by hole, would this not result in one less way to inflate handicap scores? Although it is easier to enter total score, in the spirit of fairness, I don't agree with people being allowed to do this? Thoughts?
  6. I have a golf simulator in my basement and I haven't lost a ball there yet! I was gifted with a bunch of Bridgestone e6 balls from Skycaddie. Nice soft ball for 90 to 95 mph swing speed. I found they last about 400 shots with various clubs before they start losing significant distance and shortly after (10-15 shots) crack on the surface. In comparison, the titleist pro v balls take about 700 shots to split open. If you are above 100 mph (hit bombs) they probably break down quicker. Of course, the surface wears before then (200 shots) but I really don't notice the distance and dispersion data change much as it wears. I assume you lose backspin as time goes on? I play 100 rounds a year so I definitely don't pull a new ball each round. A gouge from the Phoenix desert will cause me to reach for a new one.
