fixin2golf reacted to Ireland Golf Lover in MacGregor Iron Testing
I used to work at MacGregor in the late 60s until the mid 70s, during my high school and college years, when they were located in Cincinnati. We made great clubs back then…the VIPs, Tommy Armour Silver Scots, Tourney Customs, MTs, DXs, and persimmon woods, especially the deep face George Bayer model. I see the current MacGregor iron offering that will be tested is an updated version of one of their best selling vintage models, the MT wingback. It will be interesting to see what the feedback is after testing, because when I worked at MacGregor the lie angles were flatter and lofts were weaker. That said, I know I’ll get flack for saying this, but today’s “standard” club offerings being upright promote an over the top downswing, making it more difficult to swing from the inside on the downswing. Don’t get me wrong…you can play that way and have success, but I have my doubts it’s consistent.

I see the McGregor iron testing that is being offered, how great to see that brand back. I'm 61 and remember as a kid I has MacGregor irons and Northwestern woods (when woods were wood!) I'm on the shelf for the rest of the season due to shoulder surgery, however, I hope all the testers have a great time with these clubs and find them as good as the current popular brands' clubs. Have fun.

How long have you been playing golf?
My step dad introduced me to the game when i was 11 years old. Im now 43 and still love the game more everyday! I now have 2 kids that play and couldn't be more proud.
What’s your handicap or normal score?
I don't know my true handicap but I typically shoot in the mid 70's.
What do you love about golf?
I absolutely love the mental fortitude it takes to be great at this game we all love. I also really enjoy helping people with theor game and teaching my kids. But if I had to pick one thing I love about the game the most it would be the people I have met along my golf journey and the life long friends I've made through the game.
