PING s159 Wedges: 2024 Forum Member Review

So, my last 9 before I head out on my trip was an interesting one. Much like Augusta, there were gusts close to 40mph when I was playing… It was hard to stay upright at times! I’ll require a couple of rounds to get the idea of how to best work with the Arccos sensors, but using my watch it did pick up all of my shots but one punch out I hit. Despite the weather conditions the one place I did pick up strokes according to the app was my short game. The turf was a little damp underneath but not too crazy, but the PINGs had a tremendous amount of spin the entire day. One thing I’m noticing is that I definitely HAVE to play more aggressive with them or I will continually end up short. I’m struggling a little bit with distance control on my pitches as I get used to the new wedges, but ultimately I think it will end up as a net benefit once I get that dialed in a bit better! Okay. Taking off now. -

I’ve noticed this as well for me - I can definitely keep it a little lower when I want to! -

I have a 9 hole round coming up shortly. I just got the Arccos sensors for the free trial set up. Not familiar with it so I’m interested to see what data shows up *arcoss* my clubs. I’m planning on tracking with my Apple watch. I made a little adjustment to fix a swing funk I’ve been in and I’m definitely hitting the S156 wedges more flush. On my good strikes, it does have a bit clickier sound than my forged Maltby DBMs. Will keep ya’ll posted on the on course performance, it may be a little damp from the rain overnight still. -
Reminder to check your the hand placement on your grip every once in a while. Today was a big breakthrough for me getting my left hand in the correct position on the grip, I finally have the feeling of what my natural backswing should be with good hand position and what I need to look it when it gets out of sync again. This resonated with me from a Faldo video and led to some follow up research. Something like… ”The left hand should feel like you’re able to hammer with it” Then from this crazy “Golf Digest: TOTAL GOLF” three ring binder I found in a neighborhood “little library”, was a grip thought from Davis Love Jr. along the lines of… ”The life line of your right hand should follow the outside of your left thumb.” Put these two together and I’m back on plane baby!! Hopefully writing this post will help me remember how to get back to where I need to be whenever I’m not syncing up again.

Hey all been a busy week. I’ll be golfing 9 at my Spark Golf league Thursday night and will have my 2nd shot at playing with the S159s. I just worked out a big issue/bad habit that reared its ugly head, so I’m hoping to have a better round and feel for the wedges this time around - will report back. I will be out of town for the next week hitting up the National Parks loop in Utah. Hoping they’ll help build up some leg strength to start the season! When I’m back from the trip I’m planning on doing a pitching and chipping test around the practice green at the home muni to compare gamers to the new wedges. I’ll do a post about the last two rounds I played with the s159s in the bag before I leave, then follow up with the short game test thoughts after! -
What Is Your Next Planned Golf Equipment Purchase?
johngschulz replied to GolfSpy_APH's topic in General Equipment Talk
I think I’m going to bring my clubs into a local fitter for their tuneup on trackman. They can check the loft/lie, tune my driver setting, etc. with data from Trackman. Next club will be the putter, still using my 2006/07 white hot #7, I could use a little more technology and forgiveness in the putter sometimes. Maybe not the Brian Harman route but something between… -
Working on my swing plane. I have a tendency to get to flat. When I get upright I am able to get the more in-to-out swing we’re looking for. I just have a natural tendency to swing flatter, but it’s killing my consistency. The change is going to feel weird for a while but trying my best to commit to it each practice session and hoping it translates to a better middle ground during rounds.

I remember when Jason Day was really having back issues (US Open?) and had to spend a lot of time trying to get it right. Glad he appears to be healthier these *days*.

Best finish to a tournament this year IMO. Happy that the W got Bahtia into The Masters, he’s playing well and deserves to be in it. Would love if those two were able to run it back, it was a very good show!

Morning folks! I hope everyone had a good weekend. Got in a wine bar for a friends bday, an MLS game, rec soccer game, a trip out with the little and dinner with the rents. Good weekend. Eclipse today, Masters this week, and heading to Utah to do the National Parks loop on Saturday! Going to be staying busy. Has anyone come across the book Golf Digest “TOTAL GOLF”? It’s a 3 ring binder. I found it in a community library and thought I’d give it a try - would love to know anyone else has paged through it and has any thoughts!

I’ve had the Maltbys since the beginning of 2021, a little wedding present to myself. I would say they are still probably under 50 or so full rounds with some range time. So they should have plenty of life left. If you see my earlier post they are still taking lots of material off of the balls, so I don’t think the wear on the grooves are the main factor at play. That said I’m sure there is some impact, new grooves and groove technology in play for sure, just not the *main* reason I suspect. On my old Vokey SM6 - those were ready for retirement if you check out those beach photos lol. -
1. Masters 2. The Open 3. US Open 4. PGA

Not gonna lie, this made me lol. Korda would have been sick, but I think she’s probably focused on getting that 4th straight W!
