Hi all! I'm Jimmy from sunny(ish) Devon in England. I've been playing golf for over 24 years basically growing up on a golf course with my father being the secretary. The last 10 years I fell out of love with the game, playing possibly once or twice a year. But of course the bug never leaves and last year I finally came back to the fold.
How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?
24 years and currently holding a 23.5 handicap.
What do you love about golf?
What I love about golf is that every shot can be the one, the reason you play golf. Some play to shoot low, some play for fun, I play to see that perfect shot, the ball pin seeking or the perfect drive.
What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?
I saw the driver test on YouTube and decided to have a look. I've been trying to find something different than the usual YouTube golf channels following trends.
Where are you from? What is your home course?
Devon, England and currently I'm a member at two clubs being Dainton Park golf club & Bovey Castle.
What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?
Devon has a huge range of varied courses, links, parkland, community, private, championship. The worst thing atm is trying to book a tee time.
What do you do for a living?
I'm training to be a quantity surveyor with a chartered company.
How’d you pick your user name?
It's a new handle I've made to hopefully journal my story getting as low as I can.

Yes and it’s what things like decade get into. The hero shot is usually not the right play.
Playing to a number has its place but it’s not necessarily off the tee. Strokes gained tells us closer is better, but we need to look at the risk as well and choose the appropriate shot. But standing on the tee and going for this shot I’m trying to be 150 out rather than hitting a club that can get you closer and in play still is a bad approach.

I agree that closer to the hole is king off the tee but you always have to caveat this with smart play still outweighs just outright distance. Routinely watch mid to high handicap golfer friends take the shot on that leads to 2 or 3 extra strokes because the miss was a hazard or OB.
The course I'm currently a member of totally punishes driver shots that are at the far edges of my dispersion with multiple holes having landing zones less that 30 yards wide due to funnelling fairways ( I will say that driving is the weakest part of my game, lessons are required)

I agree there are always caveats to pretty much any type of golf "rule" out there like these. If a 3 wood goes 250 on your best day and 230 average, it might not be worth trying to clear a hazard that requires a 240 carry for example.
But I think these are great to start with and adjust for each course, hole, and shot.
