  1. Update: i played a round yesterday putting the glove through a hard slog. My little guy fell in the mud trying to reach a found ball (and his shoes got sucked off his feet) so we've got some dirt from fishing him out. Zero visible wear, all the seams have full integrity, and i will be taking some saddle soap to it lol. Great glove.
  2. Red Rooster Sussex glove review by DerekBee I'm a golfer just approaching middle age, and I mainly play in the London, Ontario area of Canada. I've been very casually golfing since around age 13. Played a lot as a teen around a local parkland track, then fell out of it as work and marriage and young kids required my time. In 2015 I was a 'break 100 and I'm really happy' golfer who played a handful of rounds a year, including the odd scramble tournament. I happened to play with a friend that I'd known for a long time, but never played with before – turned out he plays off +0.1. Seeing what the game was like for him vs me, I got bit with the bug and wanted to get better and enjoy the sport more. Since then I've promised myself to play once a week during the on season, and even though I break that promise way more than I'd like because life is busy, I've managed to chip away at my handicap and will be starting off the season just under 13. This years' goal is single digits! My son is just getting into the sport (still about 80% more interested in hunting for golf balls in the trees while we're out) the last couple years, and it is something I hope we can do together for decades to come (that's me in the cart with him, and his uncle playing with us last season). https://imgur.com/w1GawUh I got selected for the Red Rooster glove test, which is really exciting, because a golf glove is something I've never been brand attached to (usually buy whatever is on sale at the time at the pro shop or if I happen to be at the golf store). But I'm very brand attached to my irons and wedges, and very brand attached to my ball. After researching enough about the game, you realize the course is constantly trying to take away from you, so you should try to claw some back wherever possible – this is a no brainer on equipment, and especially on your golf ball. I have always been curious whether sticking with one consistent quality golf glove is another area that is worth a look, and now I have a chance to test that out! I am excited for this test, for a few reasons: The major golf club manufacturers all offer golf clubs, sure, but they are golf club manufacturers first and foremost. Red Rooster started out as a golf glove maker. That's their specialty. They designed this glove with quality in mind, and one of the owners of the company is a former touring pro. The focus is on performance and quality, not mass production first. I'm a huge fan of their push into helping junior golf, too. I'm going to test this glove against what I'm currently gaming – whatever standard golf brands' leather glove is on sale at the time, and intermittently a microfiber glove with little rubber non slip dots all over it that I bought at a pro shop a few years ago and doesn't seem to die. I know this is a high quality product going in; I appreciate high quality things that last and perform well as I get older and time gets dearer. My expectations are that this glove with definitely outperform whatever I have in my bag right now, and it's just going to come down to a question of value (built, fit and performance) for the premium price at that point. -- Virtual fitting 10/10 Short and sweet, I sent the measurements they requested of my hand, and my size choice. They immediately responded with a different recommendation, which I thought might be a bit too small and snug. Kerry (with grace) overrode and recommended a cadet fit, and told me 'it should feel a little too tight for the first few minutes until it stretches out'. Turns out, he was exactly right! Thanks for applying your knowledge and expertise, Kerry! Unboxing and Appearance 10/10: When you receive this product, you know you are looking at a premium product just by the packaging. Red Rooster shipped 3 different gloves for me to try out. They also included an awesome carrying case that just clips on to your golf bag. It is well built, perfectly sized for flat laid out golf gloves (no more wrinkly mess coming out of the bag pocket!), and definitely 'classes up the joint'. The product itself is what you would expect from a high quality manufacturers' product: The leather is supple and beautiful. The stitching has not a thread out of place. This glove is definitely far more stitched than a standard major manufacturers' glove, lending to their claims of quality and durability. Double stitching and zig zag stitching are one of those beautiful form + function things on the glove. There are some 'little things' that offer great fit. The zig zag stitching across the back of the hand allows for a firmer stretch that retains its snugness, instead of your bog standard leather glove which tends to work loose after a wear or two. The venting is always nice for keeping cooler. The range rooster is definitely my favourite of the three for every day use, but the Sussex just screams 'tour' when you snug it on to your hand. It feels like it is barely there once it has formed up to your hand after a few minutes. https://imgur.com/7VGyv9K https://imgur.com/GS2nMOn https://imgur.com/yVNznw9 - I mean just. look. at. that. stitching. https://imgur.com/dTeXg19 https://imgur.com/IWJdYOe https://imgur.com/Lu3dX0W - and this. Wow. On Course 10/10: Due to a burn injury, I was unable to play any golf until about a week and a half ago when I was healed up enough. A few ranges sessions with each and some bunker and green side time and there is virtually no wear. Even with the thinness of the Sussex it is holding up remarkably well, and didn't take its first visible mark until an actual golf round (probably from cleaning my ball or fishing it out of the trees). I finally played a full round with the Sussex. It still felt 'too tight' when I first put it on, as they did in my original unboxing, but after a few minutes just felt perfect. I wish I could say my score was improved by them, but this wizard can't blame his wands or his gloves. Rough start to my round with a bogey, triple, and two doubles, but found a pace and played +5 over the remaining 14 holes. These gloves feel amazing on the hand, and they also make the club feel amazing. They are noticeably 'grabby' on the grip and inspire a lot of confidence – One issue I do have sometimes is re-gripping during my backswing, more often than not resulting in a pull or hook. I did not find myself regripping my hands mid swing wearing this glove, and I am sure the way this glove sticks to the club is inspiring my subconscious. The Sussex, barely noticeable on the hand because it is thinner and lighter, performed better than any glove I've used in terms of re-gripping. At the range about 200 balls in: https://imgur.com/mODoB5q Heading out to the truck after my last round - probably 500 swings on it at this point, and holding up super well. https://imgur.com/2Q6tqiA Conclusion 10/10: I am overall highly impressed with Red Rooster. They seem to have refreshing organizational goals, and I can't say I've ever put a nicer golf glove on my hand. They are certainly not cheap, but quality and cheap do not go together. You can tell that a tremendous amount of care and attention to detail was put into the design of these gloves and the sourcing of the materials and build process. I am interested to see how these hold up over the season compared to my usual Footjoy or Callaway or Whatever-Brand-Leather-Glove-Is-On-Sale-At-The-Shop purchase. Over my range sessions I probably hit about 300 full swing balls with all of my clubs, and maybe another 200 chip and pitch shots and 100 or so putts. I have had gloves in the past that showed wear on the leather even after a round or two, and these gloves have no noticeable wear yet. If they are 2x as durable, that alone is a justification for the purchase. The excellent workmanship, thoughtful and useful design and fitting process, and performance on the actual club are all a bonus. I will be buying more of these when mine finally wear out, and will be proudly displaying the branded case on my golf bag and tell anyone who asks 'what's that' all about Red Rooster. 10/10 product and experience. I wish all the best in their future growth and will help where I can. I am taking my dad and son out for a round on Sunday, and will post an updated pic on how the Sussex is holding up after that round is done. I'd also like to thank both Red Rooster and the MyGolfSpy team for the opportunity to try these out.
  3. I bought a mat a few years ago based on the fact it grabs ands lows my clubs down even more than bog standard turf when I fat it, and it actually helped me out. I did get some tennis elbow going the first winter using it because holy hell does it grab the club, but my strike has definitely improved.
  4. Wanting to revamp the top end of my bag this year with more woods and hybrids to make things friendlier. Thinking of swapping my 3/4W, 3H, 4i, 5i out for 5W lofted down, 7W lofted down, and a 5H. I was messing around with a buddy's srixon 5 and 7 wood and they were stupid easy to hit. Kind of want to check out the new wilson staff Dynapower lineup.
  5. Just want to put a plug in here for the Garmin setup. I have the S60 and CT10 club tags and keep track of all my stats. The watch/GPS system is nicely accurate and getting distances to trouble on the fly is handy. Stats tracking is the real game changer as I've been able to see my miss tendencies with each club and really start playing percentages. Last year dropped 5 shots mostly thanks to this rig. Highly recommended!
  6. Thanks! I'll be checking it out for sure
  7. I'm not a fan of the rollback; I think the equipment ex-driver is going to be able to overcome most of it. If the rollback is through the generation of spin, they will have to follow closely behind this with some kind of an equipment ban/limit that is in addition to all the existing restrictions. Players could just jack lofts and start playing low spinning bombers to bring the spin back down and up the carry and descent angle, no? It makes more sense to me to make the course more punishing for inaccuracy; Scores haven't dropped that much over the last 30 years - hell, Tiger's SG against the field for driver was higher in his day than the top guys are now, so why is this suddenly an issue? Up the risk/reward for long bombing it and you'll see a lot of guys just pull 3 wood and put the ball out there to last generations' carry, anyway, unless they are chasing - in which case that just adds to the excitement.
  8. Does anyone know if the fairway woods go up to 7 wood and beyond? I'm planning on trying some tweaks on the bottom end of my bag this year to make life easier; was messing around with a buddy's srixon 5 and 7 woods on a sim a month ago and loved the launch compared to my hybrids. Thinking to replace my hybrid and 3/4 wood with 5 and 7 wood, and I'm loving the Dynapower lineup for the money. Going to try out the driver, too - mine is an oldie c. 2009!
  9. Hi all! Brand new here. Have been watching MGS for years on YT but never really clued in they had a forum. Just saw the Edel testing post on twitter and I also had no idea they do that kind of thing either! How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? Been playing very intermittently since the late 90s, but got the bug about 7 years ago after a hiatus and have been working on grinding down my handicap and would love to one day get to scratch or better. What do you love about golf? A game where you are surrounded by nature, where you are playing against the course and against yourself as well as opponents. A game you can never 'beat', but can always improve. Love the precision and control, the feeling of execution is unlike any other sport. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? The twitter post about Edel testing, since i live not far from a fitter and have tried their putters in the past. Where are you from? What is your home course? SW Ontario. No home course currently as it was shut down a few years ago, so mostly buy regional discount memberships and play a number of courses in the area. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? Almost every level of course quality available close by, prices are decent. Worst thing is only being able to golf 7 months of the year outdoors! What do you do for a living? Own a landscaping and construction company since 2002. How’d you pick your user name? It's me!
