  1. We've got a similar game that goes on at my club but their stakes are crazy big. It's nothing to lose $200 - 300 on the course then they play poker in the spike bar after that and do some serious betting. More money than sense. But having said that they can afford it and they have fun but it's way out of my league. It's also crazy when you shoot your best round at the club and lose $105, does nothing for your confidence. I know what you mean about your heart pounding over a putt. That happens to me when it's over a dollar
  2. A hundred and forty five bucks poorer? Glad you enjoyed the experience jbil Mate I would steer clear of those hustlers until you feel like you can get your revenge. Nah Bugger that just steer clear. I played like crap and won my high stakes match today - won 3 bucks. Lost 2 bucks yesterday and played like crap too that's the size of my big money games.
  3. Played great for 12 holes today and absolute rubbish for the last 6. Any luck I had completely deserted me. Just terrible.
  4. As always I feel much better reading about my fellow members misfortunes and triumphs. Sportsfan what an epic journey you had mate it's a wonder you didn't set fire to that bloody cart for good measure! I had a run of form last week that like the fickle woman that she is left me as quickly as she seduced me into thinking I could actually play the game. Yesterday I had 6 putts horseshoe on me, today 3 did the same and at least four shaved the lip enough to deviate the course of the ball. I'm back to remembering the good shots to keep me going and interested such is my frustration. Personally I think runs of form should last at least a month at a time and every time you tee it up you should better your handicap by at least two shots and only be handicapped for two of those good games. That is because I'm playing 5 times a week. One can always dream
  5. I'm beginning to think all you blokes are part of a closet alcohol appreciation cult Especially you Kenny!
  6. I'm a great believer in the theory that says we are all born with a swing. We just need to take up the game and discover that swing. A good teacher can help bring that out in us or we can discover it ourselves as we learn the game. Along with that inborn swing comes a shot shape. It can be a gentle fade or conversely a gentle draw. It can be a dead straight borer, a high or low bender. Whatever it is, it becomes our go to shot. The shot say where on a par five that takes you three shots to get there, it's that second shot - the lay up that you know will pretty much land and roll up to where you want it to. At my club the10th is a reachable par five but for whatever reason sometimes I just want to play it as a three shot hole. I hit 3 wood from the tee and that leaves me probably the most important shot of the hole. It sets me up for my third which is a gap wedge of about 100 yards. My layup shot then is the one and I hit my go to 3-5 yard draw, usually a 5 iron that puts me in the mayors office and possible birdie city if I get my wedge approach right. My go to shot is that 3-5 yard draw that I can comfortably hit at will whenever I want. What's your go to shot?
  7. So Jbil I'm guessing you're a lion being one of the new young tyros in the club! Way to go mate! Stick it to those old legends.
  8. Welcome to the forums Silvia I'm sure some of the locals here will be able to answer your questions. Enjoy!
  9. Hi Super I saw this when you first posted and apart from the old "Links 386" that came out in the late 80's early nineties I'm not sure of any PC based golf games. Links was an excellent game and I wasted many hours in front of it. I googled it and I think you can still get it but it involves a bit of mucking around and you have to download a DOS emulator or some thing. Not real savvy in that stuff. Perhaps if you google Links it might make more sense to you. Otherwise spend a squillion dollars on a game console and buy the new EA Sports Rory McIroy Golf 2015
  10. I had the best round in ages today. I won my Wednesday competition shot 78/39 stableford points winning by 2 points on handicap. That was worth a $30 voucher and 5 order of merit points and that put me in equal first place. Whilst the PGA tour it aint I'm pretty happy about that. The ball is starting to cooperate at last As Silver and Black says any score that starts with a 7 I'm stoked with!
  11. Know what you mean Kenny. I have no problems remembering every shot I hit, hell sometimes I can even remember seeing the ball spinning as it left the club face and started its journey to oblivion
  12. This is such a good thread. It's one of the first I look at when I'm on the site. It's great and almost feels like sitting down with a bunch of mates after a game and listening to the recounting of the adventures out on the course over a beer or something similar
  13. Got stuck on the bogey train today on the front nine. Four straight bogies which for me equates to one point on my stableford card score - actually there was a double thrown in there because I got a shot on one of those. I still managed to shoot 16 points or two over my handicap and 33 for the round. It was a good comeback but there certainly was some patchy golf thrown in. My best shot was a towering seven iron approach to a par four that finished on the edge of a back flag green and I made a fighting par. Looking forward to a better game with my Wednesday club in a couple of days.
  14. Had a solid round today and shot 36 points that included a triple on 16 that really hurt and prevented me from breaking 80 for the first time in a month or so. We have these nasty little things called grass trees that are ball magnets and they eat balls as well as making a swing to escape them nearly impossible when the ball is underneath their fronds. My irons were really crisp and I was crushing my 3 wood off the tee seeing as my driver was only cooperating sporadically. For a change I made 2 really critical putts and a chip in at different times to keep the round going. The first was a 20 foot down hill left to righter from just off the green for bogey on our index 1 hole it curled into the centre of the cup. The chip in was on 9 a par five with an elevated green. I had to flop a shot onto the green and get it to release enough to roll up to the hole it did and went in for a 4 and that allowed me to shoot 2 under my handicap for 20 points. The next putt was on 14 again from just off the green, A 25 footer left to right that curled into the side door when any door would do for another birdie 3. I finished with a two over 16 points and with out the triple on 16 a possible 39 so I was happy. I have included a picture of a grass tree and recommend if you ever visit here to avoid them at all costs. They are a nasty thing and harbour kangaroo ticks, eat golf balls and generally piss golfers off in a major way. They also have a secret name that I can't publish on these forums.
  15. Grrrr don't you just hate that Jbill. I think I'd rather be not told that had happened but there is the knowledge that at least it is going where you aimed Probably didn't happen because you're an elitist club member and it was karma!
  16. Had a reasonable round today and managed to come in third place with 37 stableford points 81 off the bat. Almost back to some decent form and hit some great shots. Once again the putter let me down somewhat but I'm looking forward to my rounds again
  17. I hope you see this Fire in the Hole - I just noticed your question regarding my new putter. I agree the head shape is kinda groovy and was part of the attraction. The feel off the insert is quite nice, soft yet positive and it puts a really nice roll on the ball. Even the tiny aim line is perfect for the size of the head and fits with the aim small miss small theory that I used to convince myself to buy the thing in the first place. According to the specs on the Ping Website the head is 350 grams. Our greens are running at 11 to 11.5 on the stimp at the moment and down hill they are quicker. I have found the head weight to be perfect for these quick greens with plenty of heft for longer putts but light enough to putt a positive roll on those down hill left to righters that make life difficult. The putter itself has really helped pull me out of the putting doldrums so I'm really happy with it especially since I'm making more birdies with it
  18. Had a great round today, was asked to fill in in a pennants match for the division 5 team from our club. Managed to win 6 & 4, drained a 25 foot birdie putt from just off the green to deliver the coup de gras and shot a solid 79 off the stick. It's the best round I've had in recent memory and I'm starting to feel like I've got a handle on my swing again.
  19. Jmike try a Cobra Fly Z mate they are the ducks guts and well worth at least a try!
  20. It's fun rekindling a love affair. My Mizunos are back The new shafts are sensational and I'm hitting the ball and getting that good old Mizuno "melts in your mouth" type sensation at impact and I'm a good 10 yards longer with them. I set up on our 11th hole today and it measured 136 yards and that was about how far I had been hitting my 8 iron so that's what I selected and promptly air mailed the green. Did that a couple of times including a pitching wedge on 9 a par 5 that I carried 125 yards and failed to get up and down but my putting is another issue that is terminal at the moment but improving. It feels like I'm so close to playing well. I was off 10 today, a handicap I haven't been off ever since I joined the club and had a shot on the first hole which was stroke index 10. I was so excited I could taste it. I hit a great 3 wood and then went chunk, chunk, chunk and two putted for a double. Tasted it alright and it tasted like poo It is going to be embarrassing when I finally get everything firing on all cylinders
  21. Played my first round with my reshafted Mizunos today and what a difference having the right shaft in them makes. The ball actually goes where you aim to hit it and that causes all sorts of problems when that hasn't been happening at all. I hit some fantastic shots the best being a towering seven iron to 3 ft on a par three and I promptly missed the birdie too. By way of a confession I was falling out of love with my Mizzies all because of the shaft issue and getting them reshafted was the last ditch attempt at reconciliation. There's still some work to be done adjusting especially after having the Cally Apex irons in my bag for nearly a week. They are such good irons that anything feels a bit flat in comparison. The faces are so hot and lively that every shot is a crisp amazing experience. Having said that the Mizuno buttery soft feel is also a sensual experience. Didn't score that great but once again there is light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully my index will start making its way back down from the northwards climb that has been happening. It will hit 9.1 after todays card goes in and that is after getting down to 4.5 which was an all time low. And that my Golfspy friends is all the result of having poorly fitted clubs in the bag and trying to convince yourself that all will be ok
  22. I'm sort of doubling up here because I posted the pics in the putter forum too but what the hell. My club Pro bought several sample putters from the Ping rep for a good price and sold them to us at $100 each which is a bargain. It's a Ping ZB S. It is performing better on the practise green than the course so far but that's only one round. Fingers are crossed it's the answer to my putting woes.
  23. I am the 3 putt king, I can do anything - Jim Morrison from a song he was writing on my golf. God I sucked at putting today. Hit so many greens in reg and three putted them all aaaaarrrrrrgggghhh! At least I am hitting greens and my irons again. Hit the range for a punishment bucket and hit pure shot after pure shot. Went and poked around the pro shop and found a putter I liked and had a putt with it for an hour. Liked it so much I decided to reward my good range play and bought it. Probably will hate it after the game tomorrow, that's golf.
  24. 4 over on the front and six over on the back. Despite my best effort I didn't manage to stay focussed for the entire round, Hit some great shots though including a 230 yard 3rd shot to the 16th a par 5 and a great 80 yard hop and stop on 18 and then slotted the putt for a great par to finish the round on. I've got the Callaway Apex's for a couple of more days so I'm happy about that too.
  25. 46/38 how's that for consistency. A very bloody ordinary front nine again that went bogey, bogey, bogey, double, par, bogey, triple, bogey, par. When I made the par I thought ahhh good I'm off the train only to find that it was waiting for me at the next stop. Two over on the back nine with two birdies on par threes that earned me two brand new Titleists improved my sense of humour immensely as did a nice juicy par on the 18th that is rated index 6 so it's no push over and is always a good one to par. It wasn't enough to stop me losing a dollar to my buddy but I did get to remind him I picked up $14 worth of balls Oh yeah and sitting down in front of the TV this evening and I was watching the "Haney Project" with Michael Phelps and there was a scene where Lee Trevino was giving him (Phelps) a tip on the range that I had an experiment with outside and it felt really good in my swing - maybe it's the "secret" of golf maybe I'm saved at last. More to follow...
