Yes you should get refitted. Then shaft in your ping may not work in the stealth.

is your friends driver the stealth or stealth 2. If it’s the stealth you won’t be able to get fit for it. If the stealth 2 you may or may not be able to find a fitting as fitters will be getting rid of their current releases and waiting for the new ones to come.

Ping heads are usually on the heavier side of things and the stealth is a lower spinning head than Ping. Even the Ping lst models aren’t as low spinning designs as other heads.

It’s possible the shaft is a good fit but you might need to go to the next weight class up, it’s possible similar design to the tb like a Tensei av blue is a better fit in the stealth or it’s possible that you may need a different stiffness profile.

The key things with shafts are getting the weight right to your liking then the feel.

Also TM from my recollection doesn’t offer the TB as no charge or upcharge shaft. The ka’lil or Diamana s+ are possible options that will work.

Thanks to both of you.  That's kind of what I figured - likely to lead to good results but a fitting would ensure it.

  2. First, let me say I know a lot about golf having been a very serious golfer 30 years ago but I know absolutely nothing about shafts.  People talk kickpoints and such...you might as well be speaking Latin. So apologies for my shaft ignorance here.

So I got back into the game a few years ago (thanks COVID) after a 20+ year hiatus (I'm 54 now) and got most of my game back, down to a 5 handicap playing a few times a week.  When I got back into the game I gradually updated my old clubs and bought a Ping G410 9 degree driver off eBay with a stock stiff shaft.  That shaft broke last year so I went to Club Champion for a new driver and / or shaft and based on the conversations with the fitter about what I was looking for and what my budget was, he thought it best to stick with the G410 head and get fit for a better shaft.  I ended up in a Mitsubishi Diamana TB 50 stiff with the Driver set completely neutral.  I've been really happy with with the change as it's narrowed the window of my misses.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago and one of my buddies in our regular game got a new 9 degree Stealth 2.  Of course I had to hit it and hit it incredibly well - similar ball-flight of my driver but noticeably longer carry and total distance.  My question is do I need to get completely refitted in the Stealth 2 if I decide to go that route or is it reasonable to think getting my current shaft put into the Stealth 2 would provide positive results?  Or is that really stupid?

I kept my last set of irons over 20 years, but that included a hiatus of about 15 years. But I’m planning on about every 4-6 years.

Same.  I had my PING i-3 blades for 20 years but probably averaged 3 or 4 rounds a year over the last 15 years.  Just got the golf bug again and purchased a new set of irons...would expect to do that every 4 or 5 years assuming I continue to play more.

What are your thoughts on this? Not sure if this has been published but PING conducted a study that good/great ballstrikers reduced their offline yardage closer to the centerline the smalle the blade length/smaller the sweet spots.

Any truth to this? IMO I have seen a noted improvement from shovels to players cbs....I want to move into mbs....they just feel great and I can trap the ball better.

Ran into this a couple weeks ago when I got fitted for new irons.  Started with PING G410s and I was all over the place...moved into i210 and i500 and hit the ball much more consistently.  My fitter said that he had noticed that as well...or he heard it from the PING guy and said he noticed it. 😀

I didn’t put this one on the list, but Firewheel over in Garland was a fun track. Some strange hole designs going on there but very scenic and it was not overly priced and made for a fun day.

I would consider Firewheel my first "home course".  Played there most Friday's for about 5 years straight.  Haven't played the Bridges much as I moved to Austin in 1995 but the Old Course was my favorite while the Lakes Course did have some funky holes.

    1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?  Been playing for about 35 years total.  Was extremely competitive 25 years ago, playing 4 or 5 times a week (worked at a country club) with a 4 handicap.  Needed to finish school, get a real job, etc and have played maybe 3 times a year in work events for the last 15 years.  My son plays baseball in college and when his season was cut short due to coronavirus, he started  messing around, caught the golf bug and now has me back into it.  I’m guessing I’d be a 12-14 handicap right now...determined to get back into the 70’s.

    2. What do you love about golf?  It’s evolved for me.  25 years ago I’d play Friday matches where we’d barely speak to each other, grinding over every shot...and I loved it!  Today that would be miserable.  It’s nice now to get out with my son or friends, be outside, away from work and drink a few Beers.

    3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? .i don’t know any spies (that I know of).  I just got fitted and bought new irons, replacing the 20 year old Pings, and was doing research before I bought woods/hybrids when I stumbled upon the site.

    4. Where are you from? What is your home course?  Grew up in the North Dallas / Richardson area, playing Firewheel, Sherril Park, Chase Oaks and Tennison most frequently.  Now I live in Round Rock (just north of Austin) and usually play Teravista, Star Ranch, Forest Creek but get lucky from time to time and have a friend get me on at UT Club.

    5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?  Can’t complain.

    6. What do you do for a living? IT Sales

    7. How’d you pick your user name?  My usual one was taken so it’s  variation on my name.
