  1. DId something similar last weekend, liked it so much we did it again today. Pork Tenderloin seasoned with salt/pepper and Dijon mustard, stuff with black forest ham, roasted red peppers and Boursin (garlic and herb cheese), and wrapped with a couple of slices of bacon to keep it moist. Indirect grilled with smoke. Also did another tenderloin for my son(10 yo) with just my standard barbecue rub I use. Last week we used pecan wood for smoke, but my son who helps with the cooking, wanted to experiment with different woods to figure out which smoke he likes best so it was apple today. Apple has taken the lead from pecan but next time out we'll use cherry and he'll render his verdict. Topped with some Trader Joe's Bomba (calabrian chile spread).
  2. I was struggling with a terrible hook on my three wood and one day looking to add a few bucks to my cart to get free shipping from Dick's decided why not try one of these and see if it helps. Put the Tour XL on and it ended the wild hooks I was having. Fast forward a couple of months and my driver has been garbage alternating between a dead block right and a snap/pull hook. I have been playing MCC +4 midsize with an extra bottom-hand wrap and prefer the no/minimal taper so decided to try out one of the Str8 Tech Tours in a medium on the driver. Took it to the range yesterday and after a slight adjustment in how I was holding the club (stronger bottom hand) was crushing the ball with the occasional slight fade/ tiny draw. Let my buddy try it since he's been wanting to move to a larger grip and he loved it too so we've both ordered some more. When I got fit a couple of years ago the fitter pointed out my tendency to flip in my downswing, and I think that really shows itself in the snap hooks/pulls I get with the driver. The first thing I noticed swinging the driver with the STR8 tech on it was the impact of counterbalancing. The "Whoosh" in the swing was exactly where it should be. And the biggest takeaway from the range session was that swinging I had no fear of going left so I was swinging much freer. So I'm sold (let's see if it stays this way). Someone earlier in the thread mentioned them helping with a pull with irons which is my exact miss, especially on par-3s. I'll nail my distance but find myself chipping from the left side of the green. I've got 4 more STR8 techs coming, going to put one on my hybrid, 5 iron, 8 or 9 iron, and my 50-degree wedge. Evaluate how they work for each sort of "segment" of my golf bag and go from there. But if it solves the pull, my short/mid irons will be getting replaced asap. I love the look and feel and the grip feels great, but I'm a big dude who lives in Florida so I'm interested to see how these perform compared to my MCC's when the sweat is pouring. I'll gladly post back with my experience once we get into the dog days. And not to make this go on forever, but regarding sensors, I'm not an arccos user but track shots using ShotScope. Unfortunately, their tags are too wide to fit down in the recess and only 1 or 2 threads were able to grab. those quickly came undone after a couple of swings. JMX sells plugs that snap into the recess (if you don't use sensors and don't like the look) so I ordered some of those to see if I can drill a hole to get the shotscope sensors some purchase. If anyone else is using shotscope or similar tags (wide and sit flat against the butt end) I'll let you know if it works.
  3. A couple of years ago when I got fit for irons, the fitter noticed I was flipping at impact. He fit me into the MCC +4 midsize plus an extra wrap on the bottom hand. Said the reduced/eliminated taper helps quiet the bottom hand. So in that sense it could make it harder to turn over, but if you're struggling with your bottom hand getting dominant they could help. I've been playing them for 2.5 years now and love them. I haven't noticed any issues with wear, and I imagine if I was better about giving them a good scrub more regularly I could get more life out of them. But, I replace grips for my buddy and he pays me in new grips for my clubs so I generally just swap them out if they're feeling slick. Playing in Florida sweat is a factor and they seem to handle sweaty hands pretty well, haven't had any issues with slipping even during July afternoon rounds. Got my buddy playing them as well (he particularly likes the Align version) and he plays without a glove and says they're great.
  4. Welcome aboard. Used to spend a lot of time in Memphis, one of my favorite cities to visit though I never had the opportunity to play golf there (I wasn't playing much during the years I was visiting). Need to get back for a visit.
  5. Saw a youtube review of them a while back that was pretty complimentary but never got around to checking them out. Glad to hear they're quality, I'll definitely check them out.
  6. Thanks for the rec! My buddy and I were just talking last round about picking up some used ProV's so glad to hear about a reputable site to get them from and especially that we won't need to go top-level to get quality balls. For that price, I will definitely check them out.
  7. I lose too many balls and am too much of a cheapskate to shell out for premium balls. Had been playing the maxfli straightflis but I definitely wasn't getting the results with the latest model that I had with the previous version. So I've been playing the TP5 Practice Balls (Cosmetic blems, $70/2 dozen). They perform much better for me and frankly I don't lose them as frequently as I did the straightfli. I've played the Maxfli Tour/Tour X in the past and really liked them so may pick up a cube of those at some point this year.
  8. I didn't have anyone coming over for the game, but I used it as an excuse to cook my 9-year-old's favorite foods (and, frankly, some of my favorites). Some cherry-wood smoked baby-backs and pecan-wood smoked wings. Both turned out awesome.
  9. Had been curious about the Jumbomax for a while and was ordering some stuff from Dick's and had a reward coupon so decided to grab one. I got the Tour Series model in XL. I typically play MCC+4 MIdsize grips with an extra wrap on the bottom since I tend to get handsy/flip. I decided to try the Jumbomax on a 3 wood that I have been hooking like crazy. Played it for the the first time Friday and I have to say I'm convinced. The first couple of tee shots (first two swings ever with the grip on) were pushed dead right likely because I'm conditioned (due to the hook) to aim way right. 3rd, after an aiming adjustment was crushed dead center. It was an adjustment to get used to the feel but I'm very happy with the results thus far. I'm not ready to switch over on all my clubs yet, but it has me thinking about what other clubs in my bag could benefit. So I'd say they're worth a flier, especially if you grip your own clubs and don't have to pay someone else to install them.
  10. As someone with an 8-year-old and 10-year-old who are getting into playing, I'd definitely be interested in seeing this.
  11. Can you share a link to the Srixon study that showed a 30+ yard loss? I'd love to look at the data, and it could very well change my opinion on this whole thing. As a high (mid 20s) hdcp player, I can drive it 300 (on occasion), and I can also pop it straight up 195 (on more than one occasion), or I can send in anywhere from 240-265 as per usual, all in the same round. So the 5 to even 10-yard impact for someone like me isn't likely to register at all as it's well within the normal variance for my inconsistent game. If actual data is showing a 30-yard reduction, then I'd take notice. But the only thing I could find that seems to match up to your Srixon number is Keegan Bradley griping about it. If we're going to consider "player perception" as data then we should also consider the "player perception" from the USGA Study you mentioned that "shows an 11-yard loss on a 221-yard drive." Namely, 29% of the respondents in that study claimed they felt the reduced distance ball (Np-500) flew "Longer or Much Longer" than their current ball. You earlier referenced that NP-500 ball. The one study I could find that referenced it was part of a report from 2022 (linked above) about how to address distance and included everything including multiple ball (size, aero, cor) and equipment changes. The USGA requested OEMs to produce a ball that would distance by 4.5%. The NP-500 was the result and used COR to accomplish that. In testing the actual reduction was 4.9%. (The NP-300 was an 8.5% reduction through aerodynamics per spec). For 4.9% to equal 30 yards (the low of the Srixon numbers you cite) you'd have to be averaging 612 yards off the tee. One other problem with pointing to that study is that while an 11-yard reduction from a 221-yard drive is indeed more than we're being told to expect, that study was using data from 2012: To believe numbers of an exploratory ball from 2012 are in any way relatable to numbers for on-market balls from 2023, let alone 2030 when this takes effect and OEMs have had 6 years to optimize seems misguided. Add to that that 1/3 of the balls on the market already conform to the new standard and I have a hard time believing this is going to have much impact on the average amateur. That said if you can share this Srixon study and I can evaluate the actual data, or show me that the USGA study you're citing is different than the one that I could find, I'm more than willing to review it and change my mind if the data warrants.
  12. Yeah, I didn't say anything about decreasing forgiveness without decreasing size. The article I linked to is Tiger talking about the difference between today's drivers and his older, smaller driver. Interestingly in the NLU interview, Whan mentioned he was working for an OEM as size limits were increased (eventually up to 460cc) and their thinking at the time was all about how the larger head could be swung faster, they weren't focused on forgiveness at the time.
  13. Correct, the face gets thinner over time and the CT can exceed the legal limit, particularly when equipment is designed to the absolute limit and doesn't have far to go to become non-conforming. This additional testing they said was at the request of OEMs and players, who were concerned about unknowingly having a now non-conforming driver in the bag during an on-site test and having to swap out their driver on the Tuesday of a tournament week. Rory talked about it earlier this year saying he had to switch drivers because he was concerned his old one was getting "too hot." There will be some additional scrutiny on equipment that comes in over the legal limit but within the margin of error (so technically legal but at the very edge) and studies done on the effect of striking the ball on CT over time. They have been. There's basically no distance penalty for pros on off-center hits. The whole premise is that skill (such as hitting the center of the face) should be rewarded. As is (as strokes gained data shows) there's no risk in the risk-reward of just swinging out of your shoes. Hit it as far as possible and figure it out later. They could accomplish this with super narrow fairways and crazy rough but then you're talking about changing tons of courses and that would screw amateurs over far more than anything else. They also would be looking to do this as an MLR so it only limits equipment for elite players/pros and has no impact on us average players. Still, they tried that with the ball, and the players and OEMs bitched and moaned about it and said they wouldn't adopt it so they were left with no choice but to roll back for all. I haven't listened to their Fried Egg interview but they were also on No Laying Up and I'm sure covered many of the same points. The interview is well worth a listen to better understand what actual impact will be expected (for instance a large % of balls currently on the market already conform to the new standards so AMs would see no change), why distance is a problem, and what they're trying to do.
  14. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? Going on 30 years. Don't keep an official handicap but somewhere in the mid-20s. Usually shoot anywhere from 95-110 What do you love about golf? Couple hours outdoors with friends and beers, and now that my kids (8 & 9) occasionally like going to the range and my parents have picked it up it's something we can do together across generations What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? I don't know any spies. I've been a reader of the site and peruser of the forum for a while now and just decided to actually post occasionally Where are you from? What is your home course? I live in Jax, FL. My home course is Dye's Valley at Sawgrass but I play at a few places in the area regularly What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? Best: would be year-round golf and the number of courses available. When I first came down here from up north 20+ years ago, the first February I found myself on a course in shorts and short sleeves, I was sold. Worst: As someone whose game is "long and wrong" I'd say houses right on top of courses, but that's probably more a negative for the homeowners I leave with shellshock. So as a guy with a considerable gut, I'll say the heat and humidity in the summer make it brutal, as do the regular thunderstorms and having to dodge lightning What do you do for a living? I do process improvement work and training How’d you pick your user name? About 15 years ago I was doing the "drop weight and get in shape for the wedding" thing. John Daly (who I was a fan of) had just announced he was on some program to drop a boatload of weight. So my wife and I joked we should make it a competition, me racing John Daly to see who hit their weight loss goal first and if I beat him we'd go out for a celebration dinner at some fancy restaurant in NYC or Chicago or something. It became my twitter handle and I've been using it on social media ever since.
  15. I've been trying to get the top of my bag straightened out (no pun intended) for a while now. happy with my irons and wedges but tinkering with the long clubs so this would be a great opportunity. 1. Photo and description of your current long game setup (Driver to longest non iron club) Driver: Titlest TS2 with Tensei AV White Shaft (Stiff) 3 Wood: Callaway Rogue ST Tensei Blue Shaft (Stiff) 5 Wood - Honma TW737 with Vizard Shaft (Stiff) 4 Hybrid (21 Degree): Honma TW 757 with Aldila nv 2kxv Green Shaft (Stiff) 2. Reason why you have your current setup (why it works or doesn't) Sort of by happenstance. Always played cheap clubs (whatever I could get a deal on). Buddy who is constantly tinkering and trying new things started giving me clubs that didn't work out for him, starting with the TS2 Driver. I got fit into the Tensei shaft on that (originally had a reg flex on it) and got a massive improvement from that change, but still struggle with consistency and forgiveness on off-centered hits. It's an older model and I"ve been losing some distance with it lately (possibly because I'm swinging at a lower speed to help with control). 3 wood was another gift from my friend who got a deal on it. It's a rocket launcher and I can get almost as much distance out of it as my driver when hit well, but it draws like crazy and is very inconsistent. 5 wood I picked up because I needed something in between driver/3 wood and hyrbid/irons and was replacing an ancient Orlimar 5 wood. When struck well it goes. I really like the club, but don't get a ton of reps and I have been known to pop it up off the tee. Hyrbid - another of my friend's failed experiments, turns out he can't stand hybrids. I put in a stiff shaft and lately it has become one of my most consistent clubs. Safe and pretty long off the tee, and excellent results off turf. So I'm very curious to compare it to a competitor in the same loft and see if I might start swapping out my woods for lower lofted hybrids (like an 18 degree) or if the Honma is a bit of a unicorn for me. 3. Why you want to test these Mizuno clubs! Like I said I"'m trying to get the top of my bag dialed in. Right now I tend to rotate between 2 out of the 3 of 3W/5W/Hybrid (with a driving iron in the mix too) depending a bit on what course i"m playing but also based on what I'm in the mood to his since I'm not getting super predictable results with any of them. Want to see if newer driver tech improves that slot in my bag or if that inconsistency/drop in form lately is related to something else. And frankly Mizuno's reputation for excellent products would make me want to test anything they make. I'm in Florida so still getting out on the course weekly, plus I've got a TopTracer range around the corner from my house so I think it would be fun to get some numbers (albeit with Range balls) side-by-side with my current clubs.
