  1. That's easy. Nothing in my 45 years of golf has ever felt as good as the old Hogan Apex shafts from the 80's that came in the Apex and Apex 2 irons as seen below. Hands down best ever!
  2. Good morning friends, What a great golfing weekend w/ playoffs at Doral and Valero, Nelly winning 4 in a row, and kudos to Lottie Woad for her grit in coming back to win the ANWA in style with birdies on 15, 17 and 18. My hat is off to Denny Mccarthy and Bailey Shoemaker for their amazing rounds! Hope Masters weeks is as exciting as this past weekend's fireworks.
  3. I have been having back issues and not doing anything but chipping and putting for the last 29 days. I put in my 30 notice to turn of the golfing portion of my membership at White Oak Golf Club 29 days ago. Today was the last day before it is turned off, so I decided to play one last round before several months off to let my back heal. I did not expect to play well. Lo and behold I hit it down the middle on the 1st hole, followed by an 8 iron off a down slope with a strong left to right breeze that left me a 10-footer up the hill which was center cut. Solid up and down from the edge of the water on 2, a 62 yard wedge to 2 feet for birdie on 3, chip to 3 feet for par on 4, raggedy bogie after a half-topped drive on 5, another stiffed wedge from 77 yards for birdie on 6. I was feeling pretty good about myself, but the swing started to fail on the next 3 holes. I managed saved myself with 3 great up and downs on 7-9 including a 15 footer for par on 9. I go out in 34 after hitting only 3 greens with 10 putts. I started to hit the ball better on the back hitting 5 greens and seven fairways. On 3 of the 5 greens I hit I had birdie looks inside 12 feet, but could not get anything to drop. I did make a great up and down for bogie putting out of a very firm wet bunker to 2 feet after sculling one out of the front bunker into the back bunker. Ended up coming home in 37 for a 71 net 66. 3 birdies, 2 bogies and 24 putts on a windy day with gusts to 20 MPH, and greens that were punched 16 days ago and still slow and none too smooth. The golf gods were smiling on me today.
  4. Welcome Caleb, I spent a summer in the Aleutians many years ago. Alaska is amazing!
  5. I would say Snell golf balls right there with Maxfli Tour at the 30-35 price point. Cleveland wedges. I have played them for many years and found that they are better than most and just as good as Vokey's. Lastly, the Wilson irons and woods. They are back to making a quality product again. When I first started playing junior golf half the kids, it seemed, had FG17's. Things went south when they reintroduced the Dynapower again in the early 80's. They were absolute junk. Their new offerings are great!
  6. It is a beautiful cool spring morning in Newnan, GA. Great day for golf, but not me today. Back is ailing still. Thinking a lot about Scottie and his historic win yesterday. I am amazed at how easy he makes the game look even with an average putter at best most of the time. What I love most about him is his humility. Hopefully he keeps winning and stays the same.
  7. I will be sticking with the Ping G425Max playing it at 10.5 degrees in the draw bias setting.
  8. I started playing golf in 1979 at the age of 12 and have many sets of irons. Some I loved, and some I still wonder what I was thinking. From first to latest: Hogan Producers 2-pw- First cast clubs Hogan ever made. Apex shafts were the best ever Top Flight forged blades 2-SW These were great clubs for me Hogan radials-JUNK Wilson Dynapower 2-pw- Redesign of a classic-weak lofts and very unforgiving Head Premise- 2-sw I loved these clubs and played them for 12 years. Head did not stay in the game long. Mizuno MP-32 3-PW- Played these for 10 years when I played to a +2. I could hit every shot with these. Still have them and wonder how I ever hit them. Taylormade M2 Tour- 3-pw- Solid irons that were forgiving, but still workable. Mavrik Pro 4-AW - Always loved the look of these at address Taylormade P790 5-AW- These are my current gamers, but I don't like the shafts. The jury is still out
  9. Good morning, Once again we were shown that Scottie with a decent putting week is no match for the rest of the field. In the last 2.5 season he has been in the top 10 60% of the time with lackluster putting most of the time. Pretty impressive!
  10. Good morning, Off to a great start, breakfast with a good friend. Later today my daughter and granddaughter will be in town for the weekend. Be laying low as it is supposed to be raining.
  11. It is a sad day. I may be putting my club membership on hold due to chronic back issues. Sunday before last I played my worst round in 10 years. Could not stay in a shot.
  12. Hello MGS peeps. Unfortunately, I do not think I will be able to continue with my testing. My back is giving me fits and I cannot swing the club. Played Sunday and was going to do a write up on the Tour ball only, but it was a waste of time as I could not make a golf swing and shot the worst score, 90, in the last 10 years. . I am taking at least a week off, maybe more.
  13. Good morning MGS peeps, It is a glorious day in the Atlanta metro area! I played a full 18 Sunday on the Old Course at White Oak Golf Club with the Tour X ball. First victory was that I played the whole round with the same ball. Second, I shot 76 while only hitting 7 greens. A double and 5 bogies was offset with 3 birdies and only 27 putts. Currently, I am not able to give much feedback on the ball for full shots, as I am not making anywhere near center of the face contact on anything outside of 110 yards. That being said from 110 yards in, I really like this ball. It feels soft off the face and has plenty of spin without spinning too much. I feel that I can get up and down from just about anywhere. Such as short- sided flop shot out of the rough to 5 feet, or short sided downhill bunker shot from 50 feet to 3 feet, or a knock down lob wedge off a tight down hill lie from 70 yards to a front pin that took one hop and stopped 3 feet for birdie. Which I did make by the way. It rolls great too as I made putts from 3 feet to 30 feet going up or downhill, and breaking in either direction. Mind you, I do not use the triple track feature to line up my putts as trying to line it up that way screws with my head. As for the durability question, the ball in the picture lasted the whole round including hitting 2 trees, being in to bunkers and being struck on the thin side on multiple occasions. Hardly a scratch. Big points for durability! I am planning on having a pure bunker session later in the week with both balls.
  14. Date 02/18/2024 Course Name White Oak Golf Club Old Course Gross Score 76 Course Handicap 4 Gross Strokes over/under par 4 Net Score to Par 0 Net Score 72 Net Birdies or better 4 Longest Drive 235 SIM Round? solid round. 11 fairways, 7 greens, and 26 putts. Could have been really bad, but ground it out. Love the new Chrome Soft Tour X
  15. Good morning MGS peeps, It finally warmed up and dried out here in, Newnan, GA and was able to play 18 holes on Thursday and nine holes on Friday playing both balls. I must say I like them both and am having difficulty seeing big differences. Being that I don't have a launch monitor to give precise numbers, my feedback won't be scientific. That being said, I will share my thoughts on a few characteristics of both balls that I experienced. The pics will be in order of characteristics discussed. Durability- Pics 1-2 below show the Tour ball after 27 holes, and the Tour X ball after 19 holes. I Iost one off the tee on the 9th hole on Thursday. Being that both balls hit a few trees and were in no fewer that 5 bunkers each I would say they held up very well. Distance- Overall the Tour ball has a slightly lower trajectory and was more consistent in the wind. The X was longer downwind and shorter into the wind due to higher launch and spin rate. Longest ball downwind with the Tour was 253 yards and 260 with the X. Into the wind 230 with the Tour and 222 with the X. Similarly in cross winds whether working it with or against the breeze, the Tour ball was easier to control. Short Game-Both balls perform quite well. The X is a little spinnier which I would not like in super soft conditions on shots that I need to run the ball, but amazing on flop shots, one hop stopper pitches, and downhill lies where in need the spin. Pics 3-5 show amazing results of 2 greenside bunker shots. One was an uphill shot of 20 yards onto a downslope breaking left to right. Knocked it to 3 feet. The other was a downhill 15 yarder off a downhill lie sitting down slightly, that needed to land softly about halfway to the hole in the fringe then downhill right to left 20 feet to the hole. In other words, everything was against me. That one hit the stick and ended up inside a foot. Very COOL! Iron Game- I was not striking the ball very well at all. Poor contact is poor contact and I did not see any real differences on misses. When struck properly both balls carried 6 or so yards further than my standard Chrome Soft. The X flew a little higher and stopped a little quicker. pics 6-8 show 5 hybrids hit on par 3 from 176 yards into a slight breeze. You can see how quickly the X stopped. Even had a couple of wedges backed up a little bit which is not normal for me, as I do not normally spin the ball too much. Pic 9 ball closest to the hole backed up 4-5 feet from 85 yards. All in all, I like both balls and could easily see myself going back and forth between them depending on how firm or soft the playing conditions are.
