Upgrade now, or wait for new releases?

Recommended Posts

Howdy Spies!

Asked this in the Good Morning thread, but figured that I'd ask here to more focus things.

Recently went for a club fitting, got my bag built up and Im ready to start order clubs. Current plan is to order Irons and Wedges, sell current irons, Order driver, sell driver and wood, order Hybrid then sell hybrid. Wife is on board and have money set aside to start the process.

In anticipation of ordering, I was chatting with a Srixon rep, and it looks like the MKII is on the way out, with the MKIII set to release in Spring of 2025. So now I'm at a serious crossroads. My 3 COA's (course of actions):

  • Order the ZX5 MKII that I was fit into
  • Stay on the same plan, wait until the new Srixon release, then start building the bag in spring
  • Shift my build plan, get top end of the bag first, then get irons when they release.

Im at a loss, and the itch to buy and upgrade is painful.

Thanks Spies!!

No one can tell you.  It could be a dud for your swing,  it could sound horrible,  or it could perform slightly better.   There probably wont be significant performance gains.

You don’t need the latest model golf clubs to get to scratch,  I say get the current model and forget about “hotness”

Not sure if you have a global golf or similar near you that has used sets for sale.  But mine has quite a few zx5 and zx5/4 combos on hand.  They might have a used set that's close to your specs. Play them until you can hit the new ones. Save the scratch for that new driver that will get you 2 more yards 😂

I should be golfing instead of talking smack on the web.

Generally, there is little difference between models. I am an avid watcher of club tests and to be honest most changes are cosmetic. Only to find out is to wait and test them.

Where as buying them now, you should get a descent discount and secondly hopefully your game will benefit from the set.

@Dan1993 take the good deal now, if a set of new top of the line clubs are on sale.  If you were fit, and you can order them in the right loft, lie, and all that the fitting told you, take the deal.  I always pose it this way.   Club manufacturers, come out with a "new better" design EVERY YEAR.  Is this really very likely?

After decades of club design, certainly clubs designed 40 years apart are very different.  How likely is it though that the team of designers for Srixon, or any other club manufacturers, have just totally "MISSED SOMETHING" in their last 5 years of designing clubs, and this years model, is going to be the difference between                  Night and Day compared to last years.  My opinion is NOT VERY LIKELY.

Don't misunderstand.  You want a new set of clubs, that's the only reason needed.  It's why I bought my Callaway Mavriks in 2020. New equipment(year to year) is 98% hype TO MAKE MORE MONEY.  PRACTICE makes you better, new equipment does not.

Definitely a great take! I ended up ordering the ZX5s that I fell in love with, working on selling my old clubs to get my hybrid, then once my irons sell I should be able to fund a new driver.

Club technology changes, for sure. But usually over a decade. Year to year it's rare, not impossible, that a manufacturer is going to blow their last iteration out of the water. Some great deals right now on clubs that are 2020-2023 models. Even some good 2024 deals. I liked the mk fairway over the mkii and got it for under $200. If you're hitting it well in a fitting, that's the info you need.

Telling my wife to buy quality things over the years has paid off for my golf bag.
