  1. I’ve been playing for 30+ years but I tend to play irons for a decade or more before switching so surprisingly… not many sets. Started with garage sale whatever mix & match. First real set was Ping ISI (1999) Then Ping G10 (2008) Now Titleist AP3 (2018)
  2. Swing speed training is about to get very popular lol! Everyone is going to want to add 5% more speed to get back what the ball manufacturers want to take away.
  3. I came here after seeing that same article… and to say I’m not a fan of the decision at the moment. Changing the whole game for everyone to “fix” a length problem presented by only a fraction of the already tiny fraction of the best players in the world is crazy. If we amateurs hit it “too far” we almost always have another longer tee box available. It feels 100% like the golf powers that be are protecting ball manufacturers from needing to produce two separate products for pros/ams with the idea everyone should play the same ball for the good of the game.
  4. In the “follow” button at the bottom of the page, what option is checked for notifications? It can be set to send an email anytime something is posted, once a day, once a week, or never send emails.
  5. Thank you! My garage setup works great for slow speed drills and even full swings with mid-irons, but the garage door opener is a problem for longer clubs. It’s solvable someday, it just costs money! I would recommend a series of lessons to anyone. Here are my experiences: First, a series of lessons costs about the same as a new driver (maybe a driver + a hybrid) but it’s much more valuable. A better overall swing will improve every club in your bag. Second, a series of lessons is more valuable than a single lesson (and waaay more valuable than a YouTube video) because everything in the golf swing is connected. I’ve learned one fault is often a compensation for another fault. A single lesson doesn’t provide the instructor enough time to get to the underlying issues because most pros won’t want to overload you with too much to think about (and rightly so!) Third, none of this matters if you don’t practice. You’re going to come out of each lesson with drills to do. You need to commit to those drills. It isn’t easy. It takes a LOT of reps… checking it on video. Start slow, when you see you’re nailing it you can speed up. If it breaks down, you have to slow back down. If you come back for the next lesson and you haven’t mastered the prior lesson, you’re wasting your time and money. I started this series of lessons in July so I was able to play as I progressed. It took work on the range and in my garage after each lesson, but I can honestly say each lesson did result in improvement I could see on the course.
  6. I’m 6 lessons into an 8 lesson deal. I’ve enjoyed the process… fixing one thing at a time from setup to turn to takeaway, etc. Currently my drills are focused on following through with my hands exiting lower and more left, which requires me to shallow the club more. Lesson 7 this week! I’m hopeful by the end I will have kicked my terrible early extension. (This isn’t a particularly good swing, but if you could see what it used to look like it is definitely progress!) IMG_0376.mov
  7. I agree with the other replies that essentially: nobody cares if you suck, just suck fast. And no, I’m not saying you suck haha… just saying as long as you keep pace nobody will mind what you score. Beyond that, if you keep a good attitude after poor shots (nobody likes a grumpy golfer) and if you are friendly (ask the others in your group about their game, about their life, etc) they’ll probably like you and want to play with you again!
  8. I’m trying to post but keep getting this message?
  9. Great topic! I like the accountability! 2023 goal was simple - get handicap to single digits - although there were specific stats I targeted to make that happen. Unfortunately I only reduced from 13.8 to 11.9. Of the five stats I identified to improve (FIR, GIR, par saves from non-GIR, putts per round, and penalties) I only achieved my goal in putting… which is ironic because I don’t practice putting a lot. Could have been better short game leaving shorter putts? Could have been going back to my old putter after a one year experiment with a long handled arm lock putter. FIR didn’t move even one tenth, still languishing at 4.06. Without a doubt the area I need to work on most! 2024 goal remains the same - get to single digits!
  10. I actively try to eliminate bias from any equipment fitting or testing I can. I definitely have bias, but I really want to base decisions on performance first. When I replaced my driver this year I went into it really wanting the TSR3, but the Paradym performed better for me. It was only after making the decision my fitter told me about Callaway’s 200% trade in program (I previously had the 2018 Rogue.) I really appreciated that… if he would have told me about the incentive program up front that could have swayed my judgment. When the new generation Vokey wedges come out next year my dream scenario would be to find a place I can do a blind fitting on actual grass and out of actual bunkers like you see players do on YouTube… you know, where the fitter hands them an unknown bounce and grind and they get to see what performs best. Overall I’ve had two full bags of Ping in my past and I liked them fine, but that was before custom fitting was the norm. Now it truly is whatever performs best, so anymore my bag is a mix.
  11. Love Cobblestone!! One of my favorites in this area. It’s crazy but I’ve never been to Glendarin though.
  12. D, 3W, 3H Callaway Paradym 4-PW Titleist AP3 52-56-60 Titleist Vokey P Odyssey O-Works #1 Wide Love my wedges! 6 seasons on them now so I’m looking forward to upgrading to SM10 or whatever Vokey calls their new model next year. (The 52 only had 8 degrees bounce initially and I had it bent 2 degrees stronger to narrow the gap to PW… I hit it well but I’m really going to enjoy having a little more forgiveness on the next one!)
  13. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? 30 years. Middle/upper 80’s typically. Currently 11.9 trying to get to single digits. What do you love about golf? You can play it your whole life, and you can always get better! What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? I’ve followed MGS content for years. Where are you from? What is your home course? Northeast Indiana What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? We have quite a few courses here, although we’ve lose several in the last decade. The worst thing is winter!
