  1. So really all you're doing is just removing the glossy clear coat on top and creating just enough of an abrasive surface for the new matte clear coat. I did however get a little overzealous around where the "C" used to be and ended up taking a little too much off. I just decided to remove the whole thing which I don't mind at all. So I learned my lesson and went a little lighter around where the paint is on the back side and everything was fine.
  2. Recently I had come across a post about redoing a gloss finish into matte. I had posted in the club ho page but @cnosilwas kind enough to point me in the right direction to this DIY section. I'm afraid this might soon become my favorite part of MGS as I'm a true DIY nerd and there are a ton of cool ideas in here. As I had mentioned in the other forum, I had somehow managed to swing my Cobra Radspeed hybrid into the chain on my garage door.. oof. Total McFly moment . Needless to say it did a number on the crown of my club. I've loved the Radspeed hybrid so it was a hard pill to swallow when it happened. Well I managed to put my OCD aside for a little while and continue to play the club with the wounded top. Recently I fell deep down the rabbit hole of DIY gloss to matte paint refinishing and found some really cool stuff out there. Here are some instructions that I've "borrowed" from another site that seemed to work beautifully I followed it up with a couple of coats of this stuff And here are my results I'm pretty stoked about the outcome. The pic on the left is from the Internet. I wish I would have taken a pic before when it had the chain marks. It was pretty gnarly looking. In my eyes this is a whole new club.
  3. I looked around for a DIY thread but couldn't find it. I'll have to try and track it down. I'm feeling too lazy to start a new thread so I'm going on "kind of like a new club" feelings
  4. Not so much what I bought as what I did. I just didn't know where else to share it I love the Cobra Radspeed hybrid! When I first set up my garage practice area, I wasn't sure which direction to hit without hitting the garage door tracks or chain. Well one day I ended up hitting the garage door chain and it really messed up the top of the club. I was gutted. I like the club so much that I just have continued to use it with the nasty battle damage on top. Well yesterday I found myself deep down a DIY rabbit hole and managed to do this If you look really closely you can still barely see the scratches but it's a night/day difference. I'm actually loving the matte black look and to keep almost "looks" like a brand new club. Used to look like this before the scars were added.
  5. Ha ha good call. I guess I should have referenced a little better. The tee box is directly behind me about 165 yds away. This was my 8 iron and those 2 divots are from each ball. I couldn't have hit 2 more identical looking and feeling shots. The ball on the fringe hit and rolled out 15'. The other ball hit and checked up about 2' to the right.
  6. Should be finalizing my review in the next day or so. This is a great comparison hole. 2 nearly identical shots right at the pin. Identical trajectories and distance. The reactions are literally the difference between birdie and bogey.. can anybody find the 2nd ball? It's in this pic somewhere. and which one is which?
  7. My wife calls me StuGyver.. I kinda have a thing for DIY solutions.. sometimes DIY problems too . To answer your question, not that I know. I do know that it needs to face the target before impact.
  8. Thanks to @Cfhandyman, looks like we've pinned down a baseline for what we're testing. That said, if anybody's familiar with the AVX, is it me or does this ball feel a little firmer? Not bad firm but firmer?
  9. It's just aluminum duct tape. You can pick up a roll at any Home Depot or even Walmart. Disclaimer.. if hitting into a net, the net can pull the stickers off as it's slightly abrasive. I've taken extra measures and covered that area of the ball with super glue and draped a bed sheet over my hitting net and that seems to do the trick. It does work though and the monitor picks up the measured #'s vs calculated.
  10. Got mine in today. Won't have a chance to put them in action until next week unfortunately. I've set 1 aside for some pretty hefty sim action. I plan to beat the hell out of it along with my other 2 regular game balls. My objective is to put them all through their paces to collect dry ball stats and test the durability of all 3. I know the Maxfli Tour very well. I play the Tour X during the summer when it's warm and the Tour S when things cool down during the winter. I've really gotten some great performance and durability out of both models so the Titleist "?" Ball has it's work cut out. Being that these are blank test balls, I took the liberties of renaming them left /right .. which also happens to be my initials "S.M." in Morse code Let the testing begin!
  11. I think the cat's kind of getting out of the bag on this "theory". I've seen and made comments on this idea throughout other forums and YouTube reviews. There doesn't seem to be any rebuttal from reps at these companies denying otherwise and they are clearly present in the comments. These newer "pop-up" companies definitely seem to be re-stamped factory models but maybe with different finishes and brand names. I'm sure they're decent clubs but they just have no soul IMO. Being the father of the thread, I 2nd @IndyBonzoabout Maltby clubs. It's interesting that they seem to be the lesser-known of the DTC brands because they just won't do any review send outs or consumer testing, but they've been around so much longer. That said, if you dive into their world, you'll find out that their designs are 100% original, and in fact have some very innovative qualities that I wouldn't doubt some of the bigger companies are "borrowing". They also have their own tooling and fabrication process albeit they do come out of China. Many of the irons have milled faces, grooves, and soles AND are full forgings with 1025 steel which is one of the better alloys for forged clubs. What all of this means is they they cut NO corners in making their product, and the stuff is as premium as anything. Another great fact is that their head designers are 100% accessible for Q&A about the club designs and most questions that us club dorks would have. These other companies, I'd be surprised to find a designer even working for the company. Sure they might all have a president or main rep, but who is the actual person responsible for designing each model of club that they are putting out? Also, if you end up buying a set, you don't become a victim of a "Warrior Golf" MLM type marketing barrage of nauseating spam emails. I know I've posted this around the forum but here are a few of models that I've built for myself and other people for reference. As you can see these look like nothing like anything else in the DTC world. The pictures in order are the TS4, the TS3, and KE4 Max. This shows a good progression between super game improvement and players blades.
  12. I know there's been some talk/concern about heel to toe lengths being longer than most OEM companies in the Maltby irons. Of course if you put them next to a shorter profile they're going to look longer but when you have them by themselves squared up to the ball, there's hardly anything noticeable about the length and it's 100% a functional design by maltby. I'll say this, when my normal miss is towards the toe a maltby club is going to outperform any other club in its class because of that small extra little length and mass. It's still kind of freaks me out that when I hit a shot towards the toe with a TS4 blade, how straight and far the ball still flies. Take these other clubs that might be a few millimeters shorter and apply the same strike it would either be a dead ball or nearly a shank. When you're playing these regularly you don't even think about any extra length at all. But when you have a miss towards the toe and see the results you're glad that extra little length is there.
  13. But.. when you get them dialed in man, they're SO GOOD!
  14. We so generously handed last night's game over as a gift. You're welcome While I don't follow baseball like I did in my younger years, and while we got stomped on our own field last night, had a great night with my Dad. Cherish the moments people!
  15. Awesome share Pete! If I could do it any other way I'd definitely pick your set-up. When I built the TS3's for my dad I was just blown away at how nice they feel, look, and play. Even after playing my TS4's for a couple of months leading up, the TS3 profile isn't much larger and I could easily game the whole set.. but I'm head over heels for the TS4's and don't regret not doing the split set. You're not wrong about ball speed. I'm actually carrying further with the TS4 than my previous TS1's and stopping on a dime due to such great spin #'s. And lofts are slightly weaker too. There's definitely some magic sauce in this 2023 lineup.
  16. @Ding-dong being a DIY ho, I tried this with pretty good success. An option to tape is this stuff. It is INCREDIBLE! A little messy but when you can't afford to mess around, it is a sure bet.
  17. If an OP is good enough for the "Borg" it's good enough for the rest of us mortals.
  18. Be VERY cautious! It's not so much the matter of basically throwing away $35, but handing out your personal info to a site that might be considered "questionable". AliExpress is a legit company but they allow for a lot of counterfeiters to do business. I wouldn't mess with those TBH.
  19. Been a minute since I posted in here I decided to cut back my wedge options to a versatile 56° and the set Gap. This guy just looks right at home doesn't it? High bounce T-Dub grind! AND.. Thanks to MGS I maxed out on these fellers
  20. Good to know that it is actually "a thing" and not just my imagination. As for OP, I wholeheartedly believe in the concept and don't think I'll ever go back. As far as I'm concerned, it's the OP concept that will help me find my new swing and even more speed and distance when things come together. Thanks for the post!
  21. Ha ha yeah so the weight loss is definitely intentional. It's been a little while coming. I'm what you'd call a rollercoaster eater. I played a lot of sports and did martial arts when I was younger so exercise and diet is not foreign to me. My body still seems to react fairly quickly and positively to eliminations of certain "habits". On the other side of the coin, I'm 44 and am a foodie by heart. I love to cook.. and eat. So when I'm not making the best dietary choices, my body also reacts very quickly . I'm pretty sure I've gone through this phase before where my body is all of a sudden turning faster.. and my arms even faster than just recent previous months. I just don't recall how I adapted and my game at that time hadn't progressed as much as it has recently. I guess I need to spend a few hours at the range (which I haven't done since losing weight) and really deliberately slow down, find a good flow again, and then work on speeding that up with everything more in synch. LOL this is actually something that I'm not doing any of this this time around. Might seem extreme but only and water. I've actually never felt more energized and satisfied and cravings for sweets and junk food are non-existent. Either way, thanks for the words and support. I may still start that thread just to see what falls out of the tree. Cheers!
  22. Hey so question for anyone still following along before I post a thread in the main room.. This doesn't have much to do with the OP so I guess technically I'm hijacking my own thread.. but everyone here has been so incredibly awesome to work that I figured I'd start here. "Weight loss and the driver swing". I've recently shed about 30 lbs in a fairly short period (2 months). I intend to to keep going for another 20 lbs. I've found that my driver swing has completed gone to hell in a hand basket. It's almost like I lost all of my tempo and I'm just way ahead of myself. Snap hooks are back and I'm just having a hell of a time trying to find my tempo again. Has anybody else experienced anything like this? I'm kind of perplexed as to what to do. My irons seem ok but my driver that used to be my golden ticket is the worst it's been in a long while. I'm sure I'll figure a solution but I'm just curious if this is a real thing happening and not just me looking for excuses Thanks y'all! Stu
