  1. One never knows the church does send me to and fro on occasion and we have an affilated sister churches in England and Wales. Could be some day if I'm a good boy that I get to go as an emissary.
  2. Man I wish I could play with Westy sometime! I'd love to loose some pounds on the course or somewhere, somehow at least. Oh wait you weren't talking about those kinds of pounds. At any rate I'd still love to play with you sometime. Love checking this thread once a week or so to see how everyone is playing. I'll continue you the theme shot 33-39 72 this week - Got it to 4 under after 10 and then again after 14 and went bogey, double, par, bogey - the par was on a par 5 that I was thinking birdie on but I just wilted down the stretch - my back went on me and no ibprofen was going to change it. Bottom line though I'm sticking my approaches and really starting to roll my rock again - moved the ball position a little up in my stance with the putter and I'm making everything. Wierd game
  3. Nice going Matt! It looks like you've jettisoned all of your MGS equipment? I'm still using the driver/3 wood - I had my Mizuno irons that were the trade down ones - in the bag because Georgia is much drier than here (though still pretty wet and even more humid and hotter if possible.) I also have my SCOR wedges in the bag - those have found a home there permanently. On to the reason for my post. I played with my son at Trident Lakes - the course on his base in Kings bay Georgia. (Just north of Jacksonville.) It's a nice Arthur Hills design that was in wonderful shape - Not long - around 6,500 - but it played long and its course rating is 71.8 and slope 130 which is about perfect for my ability - I always figure if I can shoot 75 with those numbers I've played well. I did it and then some - I shot 72 But here's the amazing thing - I made 18 straight pars!!!!!! I have never done that before that I can remember - What is more I didn't warm up other than to stretch really well and hit a few putts - It took about 4 holes to get in gear and I got up and down on those first 3 holes by making two nice putts (8-10 footers). After that it was very routine - I hit 8 greens but that was deceptive - after number 3 I was able to putt every time even when I missed a green - it was in the fringe and never far enough away from the hole to be overly worried about a 3 putt. My kid was all over the place - he works ungodly hours, has two young kids, is out to sea half the year and hardly ever plays - still he had a great string in the middle of the round where he made had a birdie in the middle of 6 straight pars. There was one par 5 where he was exactly 81 yards past me - It was into the wind - my drive went 227 his 308 - I hit 6 iron to 90 yards and pitched on - he hit 8 iron into the pond in front of the green, dropped, knocked another one in and made 8 - he should have hit 7 iron instead of 8 - I actually told him to hit 6, take it to the back of the green and make his birdie by 2 putting - but no........... I was very please with that round - very, very pleased. I'm playing again tomorrow. Can't wait - then it's back to work.
  4. I hate to double up here but something clicked today. Only a 75 but that was on greens that were just aerated - why - I don't have an fn clue - that normally happens in late September here but they were. I was nutting it on Sunday but today I was seeing it and nutting it as the round progressed - that's a really good sign. I could visualize everything that was going on out there.
  5. Nice hckmeyer. All of the tournament stuff down here starts in October so it's wierd for me to think that for many the season is drawing to a climax. I hadn't played in two weeks - back and time issues - but got out yesterday and just nutted the ball all day. I left a few strokes around the greens but 76 is not too bad for that type of layoff. Weather permitting I'll play again tomorrow and should be able to get on a twice a week rotation again until Thanksgiving - I'm very happy with my swing right now.
  6. I like this thread a lot. I'm going Ram Tour Grind gold simply because they were the one and only set of blades that I ever owned but that being said I played them from 78 to 84 - after that it was Ping Eye 2's for 15 plus years. I'm glad RP mentioned Wilsons because some form of Wilson Staff was the dominant club when I was young. Oh and both sets had a 2 iron. And I could hit the you know what out of the Ram one. :)
  7. Great job man - we've had a crazy summer haven't we? All that rain early but suddenly its been spectacular for Florida - we've had very few days over 90 here on the West Coast and lots of evenings have been positively comfortable once the sea breezes roll in. However Dorian is out there making her way Westward.
  8. Okay so I'm finally back on the course after those nasty interuptions of work and getting custody of a grandchild. I tried a new strategy - I did not play last week even though I had opportunities to play - instead I practiced - 2 short range sessions and every day on the putting green for a bit. I shot 73 yesterday - hit the ball pretty well (although developed a bigger than desired hook with the driver on the back nine - I'll work that out on the range today) - 27 putts speaks to my short game and I had 4 nasty lip outs - only one was in the makable range though - the others were longer looks at birdie - I was roling my rock yesterday and hitting all of my spots with my chips/pitches. I'm playing three more times this week so should be back in the saddle full speed by the time I head back to work - I'm hoping to get my game to where it can be good into the tournament season (September - October). I think I'm right on pace and the great news is I'll be carrying a higher than normal handicap into it - I'm a 5 right now - should be at least a 4 even with some good scores scattered in - 3 at worst. I can play to that.
  9. Great round Rick I feel your pain Dru and you got to play on one of the better days - Yesterday was the first day that it did not rain where I'm at in Florida in nearly three weeks. I played, shot 74 - It's remarkable to me I played two weeks ago in Indiana, averaged 257 off the tee and shot 79. I played yesterday, same length course - 6,400 yards give or take, similar slope - low 130's, similar course rating - I averaged 221 off the tee (that must be my current carry distance because trust me I was getting no roll) and you see the difference in the scores despite hitting it 35 yards shorter off the tee - Of course I'm used to bermuda greens and they are so wet you basically just aim and fire away right now.
  10. I'm sure that's it. Nothing at all to do with a lack of aptitude for putting on my part. I have had some sort of Ping that I was okay with but frankly it got stolen from my trunk too early in its career for me to know for certain - I also had a Taylor Made Monza Rossa that I like well enough to not throw at something for around two seasons.
  11. Yep to that last comment - handicaps should be achieved about 25 percent of the time. They measure potential - Its hard to play to your potential in a tournament unless you play lots of tournaments because they're different. I love playing in tournaments - I've had just enough success to make me want to do it again and there is nothing like stretching and testing oneself. I've also had my share of nose bleeds. Lots of nose bleeds.
  12. It's so easy to tell someone what to do - stay in the moment, one shot at a time, don't change your routine, blah da blah da blah da - In the end though you just have to do it - follow that advice and play one shot at a time - I think you learn that by experiencing the nose bleeds. Good luck
  13. Interesting thread - sadly I only have one, count them one putter that I truly liked and have never, ever thought of parting with. It's my current one - Never Comprimise Vodoo Daddy. I've had tons of putters in my life - that's the only one I'm bagging.
  14. For starters sorry about the divorce. For seconders sometimes golf is used for things other than shooting a good score - that's what makes it a great game and for thirders Golf Digest once did a study on the effects of alcohol on the golf game - I'm sure its not a study that is likely to be repeated given the political climate about the effects of alcohol, tobocco or anything else deemed a vise on anything - at any rate it found that many golfers improve after drinking a beer and improve even more after the second beer - after that however its downhill rather quickly.
  15. I've been gone from MGS this week and missed everyone here tremendously. Very tough week, it culminated in the resignation of our Day School principal - so guess who is the acting principal at this point. I played today though - this afternoon - St. Pete Country Club - great old, classic, southern course, it hosts one of the oldest amateur tournaments in the country - the tournament has been one by any number of different guys who've gone on to win on tour. This was my first round with the Mizunos fully bagged. I shot 38-35, 73 I saved my round on 1 quite frankly, hit a skanky drive, left myself 215 to the back right pin on a hole when I normally have a short to mid iron - played so smart - 3 wood a bit left of the green to leave an angle for my pitch, hit a reasonable pitch and holed a 5 footer for par - it just put me in such a positive frame of mind! Rolled in a 40 footer for birdie on 4 and hit so many good chips, pitches and sand shots.
  16. Shot 74 yesterday - 29 putts - the round was in direct contrast to that 83 a couple of weeks ago where I took 39 putts - the reason why I had 74 and not 73 was a ball in the water - that's three penalty strokes in the past 3 rounds - way, way too many for my taste. Still I can live with 76, 73, 74 - I'm making a few more birdies because I'm taking a few more risks, hence the penalty strokes.
  17. Sounds like folks are moving into midseason form. I had a good bounce back from last week's trainwreck - a 76 isn't going to win many prizes (alright it did win a skin) but it beats the hell out of 83. And it was a competitive 76. 31 putts this week was much more like it - two squirrely irons into hazzards weren't helpful - laying up on a par five into a lateral hazzard 30 yards left of my target? I'm still trying to figure out what happened there. At any rate the more I saw the ball go in the hole the better I got. I'm going to play again on Friday. I went to the putting green every day last week even if it was only for 5 minutes. I'm going to repeat that this week.
  18. Nice job Whiskey! That's your first time shooting even, awesome. I had an interesting day today - 39 putts, I average 32, 11 greens, I average 10. Guess which part of my game was working and which part wasn't. Shot a ridiculous 83 - I did figure out what was going on with the putter half way through the back nine - I was standing too far from the ball when I do that I struggle with pulling my putts and my speed. Hit it 4 feet past on one and missed it left coming back. Pushed a makable putt on two, knocked it 4 feet by on 3 (from 15 feet), made the putt though. It was a long, long day on the greens - hit 8 greens on the back and shot 39.
  19. Always loved those first rounds of the spring - I particularly enjoyed going out by myself like you did Paul - nothing like getting back into the swing of things, seeing the course, thinking about what lay ahead for the summer.
  20. Great job Brad! I played today with my son who's here on leave. I'm well on my way to finding my golf mojo again. Shot 36,37 73. Lipped out for Eagle on 18. It was certainly a windy day but reaching a tight 480 yard par 5 with a 4 hybrid on my approach made my day. In fact the course we played was super tight and it was very, very windy. I didn't miss a fairway on the back 9 and I was hitting it very, very solidly with the driver. The game is so much more fun when I play like this. When can I play again?
  21. Okay played today - I was going to call it off due to a nasty head cold but just needed to get outside and away from work so did school chapel and then hit the course - cool, breezy day - I'm sure you saw that if you watched Bayhill although it's always significantly windier by the water then in Orlando. At any rate we played trade irons today - my friend wanted to try my Mizunos and a guy that was with us has Rocketbldz with graphite shafts. I shot 79 which doesn't sound so great but I've played twice in the last weeks and felt like crap. I also didn't putt very well and wasn't all that focused. I loved the Rocketbldz, hit several good shots with them - had a double and a triple that inflated my score - just couldn't focus in that middle part of the round until I got some more water in me. I really drove the ball well today - missed three fairways but two of them were missed because I drove the ball through fairways on lines that I would normally not even come close driving it through on. None of the three drives left me in any kind of trouble. My blow up came when I hit a tree trying to lay up on a par 5 (overhanging limb - was trying to cut the ball around it and blocked it right into the stupid tree. I also hit a ball in the water on a par 3 -
  22. Did you have the same warm weather that we had yesterday? It was in the 80's here - Tuesday is often my golf day but I had meetings all day - literally from 7:30 in the morning until 10:30 last night. The good news is that I think we've found our associate pastor. Sound's like you need help with the tee ball - Dye courses are never particularly tight - they may look tight in places but if you are hitting the right club off the tee there is always ample room - only hitting 6 fairways is getting you off to a rough start because once you're out of position on one of his tracks its a long hard hoe to get it back into position. He's so different from another favorite of mine - Joe Lee - with Dye the closer to a hazzard you are willing to go the more likely you are to have a favorable next shot - with Lee the hazzard means - stay away from here - don't try it - don't think about it - just go somehwhere else and we'll all be happy. Oh I'm playing tomorrow - first opportunity since the train wreck a couple of weeks back - we'll see.
  23. Oh no - I wasn't saying anyone wrote anything bad about Rookie I was just taking an opportunity to give him somes props - We have some history on another site - he's always been my go to equipment guy and I thought I'd jump on the opportunity to weigh in on his post with a resounding yes. Sorry guys - didn't mean to give the impression that anyone had said anything negative about him. My bad - ier.
