  1. If I were to tell you I hit 11 of 14 fairways (and bogie the holes I didn't) and have only one three putt and strike my irons fairly well overall, you might think I shot my course handicap (15) or better. If you did, you might be very, very wrong. Friday I had the worst score for hitting the ball pretty decent overall. An incredible 46-55, 101! 14 strokes over course handicap and worst score in a couple of years. What happened! Five times in the bunker, 11 strokes including two penalties to get out. Four iron shots where I foolishly tried to incorporate a lesson tweak without any range practice (four wildly left iron shots trying to concentrate on squaring my left hand at impact, each resulting in a penalty shot and each leaving me a long distance from the hole--almost an OB impact). Add in two muffed chips and a good day ball striking totally ruined. Ouch!

  2. Fourth round back after injury layoff yesterday. Shot a 40 on the front nine, started feeling I might be back. Not so fast. Even though I hit a number of really quality shots on the back nine, limped home with a one par, three double, 47. Hit two of the best drives I can hit, left with a half wedge and wedge respectively and came away with bogies on both. Horrible wedge shots. That part of my game, as well as the putting, is definitely showing the results of a two month layoff. Add a way, way out of bounds push moonshot drive on seventeen (still don't know where that came from), two three putts and the score goes north. At least I can look back on a number of really well struck shots in the round (including a 230yd five wood out of the rough (albeit a great lie) to twenty feet (after kissing the flag stick on the way by) on our #1 HC hole (the Valley's mirror twin to Stadium 18). And I made the birdie putt!

  3. First round in eight weeks, to the day, coming back from metatarsal stress fracture. One putting session and one practice session before the round. Played surprisingly well. Shot a 46/42 88 for a two strokes over course handicap round. Two doubles and a triple hurt the score, all resulting from bad drives. Other than those holes, all but one drive was in the fairway. Long irons were great, short irons not so. Continuing a 10 round trend. Got a chance to hit my new Titleist 716 T-MB 2 iron that I had ordered just before the foot went out. Wow! What a club. Hit it on my second shot on the par 5 eighth. From the fairway, good swing, just the purest feel, exploded off the club face, boring flight, great sound, 197 on a humid dead air day. One of the best feels off the club face I have ever felt. For reference, my 4 iron is my 180 club. All in all, a successful day. Next round Friday.

  4. With my foot on ice yesterday, I trolled the golf sites. Found my fave Hirzl gloves at 19.99. Always pick them up anytime I see them sub $20, so got a couple spares. Then, made an impulse buy on a Titleist TMB 2 iron at a good price on ebay. Hit this club on a couple of different occasions with great results (fairway, within 15-20 yds of driver distance--hit the shots after hitting in play drivers just to compare). Do like the long irons better than my hybrid, so I'm 'hoping' this replaces the hybrid. Probably a pipe dream, but WTH!

Went to GolfTec for a video practice session in anticipation of my first round in 8 weeks tomorrow (out with a foot stress fracture since the first week of June). Got my first swings with the Titleist TMB 2 iron after I had finished practicing with the other clubs (swing was remarkably good after an 8 week layoff). Wow, ridiculously easy to hit! Hit only 5 shots with it, but each one one the screws with a good boring ball flight! Can't wait to see if it carries to the course!

  5. Always nice to get back on the course after some time off isn't it? Glad the foot seems to be healing well. Has the doc given you a time frame back to full duty?

No return visits scheduled. Was told (and internet confirms), just got to baby stress fractures. After pain is gone, give it at least another two weeks before exposing to regular stress (like running or, in my case, pushing off in the full golf swing). The first phase was said to be six to eight weeks (and it hit that right on the button). I've now had about 10 days of little or no pain, so I'm thinking next Monday or Tuesday for first full range session.

  6. So first trip to the golf course since June 7th and the stress fracture. Met the guys for lunch after their round, then headed for chipping and putting green for the first time. Putted real well, chipping so so. Did like that Edel wedge I bought a couple of weeks ago. Foot survived fine, will start doing more and more.

  7. Played with the Tuesday a Babe Zaharias group today @ Rogers Park. 25 players in all. I shot the lowest score, 39/44-83, with Two a Birdies. I won 1st Place, a Closest to the Pin and 2 Of the 5 Skins. Winnings totaled $115 today from a $10 entry fee. I ran out of gas in the heat on the back nine with 3 Doubles, even though I drank water and Gatorade all day. Drives were terrific and my approach shots were spot on. I was even putting decent.

Great job, Foz! With all those 80's (and that 76) you've been shooting lately, you should get that handicap below 10 pretty soon! Keep it going!
  8. That's amazing we had a storm blow through at league time Tuesday with 60 mph sustained for 20 minutes. More yesterday too. Today's round of storms stayed North of us.

    How's the fracture?

Finally, over the last six days, some progress. Went to the gym today to try to get some muscle tone and flexibility--no setbacks. Very hard to do a normal gait--big fear of putting too much pressure on the metatarsal and starting the whole process all over again. Made good progress, though, today. Small steps literally. Thx for asking!

  9. It's dryer in the Gulf than in my back yard right now anyway. :)

Dang Rev--send some this way, we've had hardly any rain since the night before the cart paths only round that caused my stress fracture, and that was six weeks ago! Everything is brown, brown, brown here.

  10. Even though I'm not playing 'cause of my stress fracture, I did stop by the PGA Superstore in Orlando on the way back from Venice. Got a 55 Score used, in great shape, for $40--this will replace my ancient Cleveland 56. Also saw a couple of Edel wedges. Quite tarnished, but grooves were good. They were $60. I seemed to recall that Edels, in addition to being well thought of, were quite pricey. So that seemed worth a shot, just to see what they were like. So I picked up the "fifty". True impulse buy.

  11. Jax - when will you start playing again?

Mine sits at 4.9 up from 4.8 - I played well during that last period - everything in the 70's - the problem was that I had a 72 drop off.  Given that I haven't swung a club while away at a conference for the past week and a half I will work on bringing it up starting this afternoon.  :)

I plan to get four rounds in this week as I'm on vacation and freed from Bayou I'm hopeful that I will shoot some good scores in the 2nd two rounds (once I get my feel and swing back.)

Who knows. I haven't noticed any improvement yet after almost 4 weeks of relative inactivity. Changing strategy a bit, wearing the boot almost all the time now.

  12. I wish the MGS site would permit those of us above a 10 index to post the decimals.  One of the other sites, dare I say G***W**, which seems to use essentially the same software, allows this.  I've gone from 17.1 to 12.4 in last 9 months, but MGS will only allow me to post the whole number index.

Just dropped to 11.8, down from 17.1 10 months ago, and lowest I've been in 20+ years. Unfortunately, its going to be stuck there a while as my stress fracture heals. At least it won't be going up soon!

  13. With my foot on ice yesterday, I trolled the golf sites. Found my fave Hirzl gloves at 19.99. Always pick them up anytime I see them sub $20, so got a couple spares. 14. No golf today. Sore foot that has been bothering me for several months really acted up Tuesday and cart paths only really made it worse. Had to cancel today. Have appointment at Mayo on Monday. Really hope its not a stress fracture. Online reading seems to indicate 50/50 between that and tendonitis.

  15. Feel your pain with the flat stick man. We'll get it figured out!

Hope so!  My stroke felt fine all day, hopefully it was just a bad day of reading and distance feel.  I literally had two putts where I read a couple of feet of break one way and they in fact went the other.  And this is the course on which I play most of the time.  Hopefully just an anomaly!

  16. Rough day.  First had to figure out if we were playing with TS Colin moving through last night.  We were.  Then, couldn't find my key fob and the backup's battery was dead.  After looking everywhere, couldn't find it, took the wife's car.  With all the looking and switching clubs, ended up getting to starter area 5 minutes before tee off.  No warm up at all.  Second, with all the rain, cart paths only, and my chronic sore right foot for some reason was acting up today, so limping around in discomfort all day.  Then, the play.  Only one bad drive, but only one or two drives I was happy with.  Then, hit a lot of irons thin because with the super wet fairways, it was mentally hard to hit down enough.  Then, with the aforementioned dampness, two chunked chips.  Then, distance control on putting was way off.  Last four rounds (on three different courses) went from very fast, to slow and big core aerated, to medium and small core aerated to today's wet, medium, sandy and small core aerated.  Long all day on the first putts--and FIVE 3 three putts!  With all that, shot 47-43/90.  Until a few months ago, that was the dividing line for me between a good round and a bad round.  Now, I don't think I could have played much worse and that was my score.

That last bit is my attempt to salvage some good vibes about today's round.

But hey, it was sunny and a good group and a good time, and I was playing golf.

  17. Jax, Being on the eastern side of the storm, the rains will continue long after it passes thru tonight. I had a semi-annual tourney scheduled for Tuesday, but we decided to postpone it a week. The group at The Babe are mostly seniors so they don't want to play in the rain. Got my annual 24 man buddy trip planned for Thurs-Sunday in Kissimmee....we should have good weather.

Foz, Rev.  Ok, just rechecked the hourly forecast.  In the hour or so since my last post, the forecast has been revised so our rain won't end until 3 pm.  Guess I'll be joining you under cover of shelter tomorrow!

  18. BTW no golf here the next couple of days. Tropical storm is moving through with tons of rain. That's too bad because I was supposed to play tomorrow. The only good thing is that it means they will push back the green aerification until next Monday and I'm playing Friday. :)

Rev--we're getting the same storm you are, 5 hours later (we've already had 2 inches).  Our rain is supposed to end at 7 am.  They pushed our tee times back half an hour to 9:05.  You sure you're not able to play??  Although, I do remember you saying that the Bayou is vulnerable to heavy rains and flooding (hence the name??)

  19. What an amazing weekend! On Saturday we registered 52 players for our weekly game, the most we have ever had. I started out with a decent front nine (43). With 2 doubles, thinking that I would not win, but only be a contributor. Well, that is when things got interesting. I birdied #10, then #11, then bogeyed #12 & Parred #13 . then made a Birdie on the Par 3, #15, then a Bogey on #16, followed by birdies on #17 & #18!....5 Birdies on the back nine, giving me a 3 under 33 on the back. My score was 43/33=76 with 36 Points! The +13 points yielded First Place. ...$154. Well that was pretty amazing until we realized that there were 44 total birdies, but there were no Skins! Every birdie was cut. I have not seen this in the 16 years I have been running a weekly game! To be fair, we took the Skin money and paid $5 for each birdie......it seemed to be the fair thing to do.( so I got another $25).

This was validated today with a solid 40/41=81 on Sunday.....(no birdies, but a $25 win).

So I simply had an amazing couple rounds of golf!

Great play, Foz.  And here I was all impressed with myself for my first ever 3 birdie round.
