  1. Whenever the time comes that you're available and interested to play with the group on Thursdays, let me know. No waiting list for you, LOL.
  2. Just saw this. Yes I guess we are, lol. I just got back down today, I was up on Long Island visiting family. live in Barefoot Resort, in North Myrtle. I usually play there, but Thursday is my "travel day", I play with a group called the Flounders (usually get about 80-100 guys) most of them are from down by you. Murrels, Surfside, Pawleys, etc. Its a real nice bunch of guys. I've been in the group about 10 years. Because we have so many, we usually book the entire course, and get good prices. For example, the next three weeks we're playing Caladonia for $59 am,Tigers Eye $45 am, then Tidewater $45... play a lot more courses on the north end now then we used to, since I brought a bunch of my Barefoot pals into the group.
  3. Famous last words lol. Just kidding, enjoy them! youre right, I was on the merry go round. Stumbled into the Rogue x (the last thing I would’ve imagined I’d end up with) and couldn’t be happier. I think I may have jumped the shark with the matching hybrids however. They’re good, but I’m not seeing an upgrade from the Steelhead hybrids. Oh well, they weren’t the first impulse buy I’ve made, and I’m sure they won’t be the last.
  4. For what it’s worth, I switched from the MD3s to the RTX3 cbs a few months ago. I loved the mds, but I like the Rtx3 a little better. Different lofts though. The calls were 54&58, the Cleveland’s are 52&58.
  5. I’ve been up north the last month or so visiting family. Haven’t been playing much, (3 or 4 times) but just popped in and I see you’ve made a few changes! New driver, which Is the one I’m dying to try, but I’m really curious about you and the Steelheads. You helped me a lot in the Cleveland iron thread, and I returned the favor with the 5 hybrid, lol. We both ended up back with the Steelheads, then I found and fell in love with the Rogue Xs. If you get the time, let me hear the details about your journey from the SHs and the Cobras to the TAs. I’d love to hear it!
  6. Try the 3 hybrid. It's a bomber, You're right about the X's being marketed badly initially (in theory only though, because I heard they sold better then anything in the '18 line up), but then word of mouth overtook that. I don't equate newer with better, especially with clubs like the Apex cf 16 &19, and drivers like the Epic & Epic Flash or 400 Max and the 410. Callaway waited 3 years to update the cf16 Apex's, and the '19's are great, but really they just tweaked the loft and modified the shape very slightly. Those '16's, along with the Epic and G400 Max drivers were "Mt Rushmore" type releases. You couldn't expect them to pull that off again so soon. The Rogue X's aren't quite in that ground breaking territory, but they're pretty damn close. In my opinion they took GI and SGI clubs to a new level. I laughed at them when they were released, but thankfully I got on board before they disappeared. I saw too many guys, even high single digits, improve with them in the bag, and now it's happening with me. I honestly don't know why anyone would choose another GI or distance iron over this set, but to each their own. Everyone knows what's best for them. Some like a certain look, some are brand loyal. Personally, I want the most forgiving, high and straight iron I can play. The fact these checked those boxes and increased my distance was a big win for me. My only concern going in was the bottom of my bag. Wedges, etc. That turned out to be no issue at all. I went 52 and 58, problem solved. Now I'm a club to a club and 1/2 longer from 3 hybrid down to the 58*, with perfect gapping.
  7. Amen brother. I'm the guy busting it, trying to go as low as I can. I want to get to single digits so badly. You see a lot of others start to pull their putts, or come up short when they think they're safely within their number. Fortunately the course we played yesterday, (the Love Course at Barefoot) has 2 difficult finishing holes on each nine, so even if we go off split tees the 'baggers have to be careful. We call 17 and 18 the holes "where good rounds go to die..."
  8. Yesterday was my last round in Myrtle Beach until September. I'm heading up to Long Island for two months. I played in my club's Tuesday members league. We played a game called break par this week. 40 guys in two flights. If you shoot a net 71, you win money, how much depends on how many others in your flight do it also. I've been playing pretty well lately (for my level anyway) but I screwed up a few holes by really pulling approach shots from the fairway, and took a 6 on a par 3 (ugh, buried in the face, then skulled it out of "mud") I hit the driver really well and putted ok, but shot an 85, which was a net 72 (so no money ) 6 guys broke their par and got $66 each. I'm happy with my round, but my hcap has really been going down the last month and a half, but I need to clean up some of the recurring mistakes, both physical and mental, in my game this summer. Should have plenty of time to practice up north, as I won't be playing as many rounds up there as I do down here at the beach.
  9. I shot an 83 on the Fazio course in Barefoot Resort. I took an 8 on a par 5, but otherwise played well. I'm really excited about the way I'm playing since I got a set of SGI irons 4 weeks ago. My iron game had really been poor the last few months. Apparently the steel shafted Apex had become a little too much for me. Graphite shafts and the added forgiveness have really helped me.
  10. For all of you mid to high caps here (especially the more "seasoned" ones), I switched from the Apex irons to the Rogue X about a month ago. Probably the most unlikely decision I've ever made with golf equipment. These things were a real eye opener for me, between the surprisingly nice feel, and of course the forgiveness and distance. I'm waiting on the 5 iron I'm adding to my set, and I'm a HUGE fan of 5 hybrids @ole gray . I'm about to drop a little over two points on my index come 7/1 and it's thanks to these beauties. Don't be afraid to give them a try at the closeout pricing or at CPO. The best way I can describe them is as PING G irons on steroids, LOL.
  11. I shot 85 on the Barefoot Resort Fazio Course today. I had two triple bogeys on par 3's. Both were caused by pulled tee balls into hazards. Instead of re teeing, and probably insuring 5, maybe even a 4, I tried two of the dumbest "hero" shots you could imagine. Bad enough I did it once, but I'm the moron who did it twice in the span of a few holes. I'm actually playing the best I have in quite a while, but I really have to work on my course management and learn to think, think, think better then I do out there. I'm my own worst enemy sometimes on a golf course. There were two low single digit players in my group and they both told me if they were caddying for me, I would've broken 80. I guess when a person isn't hitting the ball well, you don't notice the mental errors as much because of all the physical mistakes you're making. Now that I'm playing well again, those mental gaffes become glaringly obvious.
  12. Thanks guys! Yep, I turned 65 today, and shot 85 on the Fazio Course at Barefoot (even with two triple bogey 6's par 3's. Don't ask how that happened. Great day with about 40 great guys who surprised me at the end before they announced flight winners by bringing out a cake and singing Happy Birthday. I'm a very lucky man to have such a great group of guys to play with. BTW I still took 3rd in net with the A flight also, even with those two screw up holes, heh heh.
  13. Congratulations!!! That is a beautiful set of irons! Damn Mizuno's always look so good in the bag, they make you want to play well!!! Hit 'em long and straight, I hope you enjoy them for a long time... Btw funny thing about certain companies and their fittings. A few years ago a PING rep fit me into a senior flex with the G30's. My friends were hysterical watching me hit 25 yard hooks for two months. When I was buying the Apex (reg flex graphite) right after I returned the G30s, I also demoed the Mizuno jpx 850s. Their shaft optimizer wanted me to play a 130g stiff steel shaft. Thank goodness I got to demo it. Lets just say it was a bridge too far...
  14. I haven't read further, so I don't know if you've decided to buy yet. My question is, why the Rogues if you have the G400's? Here's why I'm asking. I'm in my mid 60's. I felt like I wasn't getting everything I should out of my Apex irons. I tried the Steelhead XRs, and they were good (the hybrids were great), but to me there are so many sets out there like that. The M series, the G's, and Rogues. I never considered the Rogue X. I thought it was the last thing I wanted. Then a 8 hcp won the net division at our club championship playing them. He finally convinced me to go demo a 7 iron. I'm a lefty like you are so I know how hard it is to try different clubs. Well these blew me away. They felt soft as the Apex, and were a club longer then the Steelheads and Rogues. I call them PING G's on steroids. Just as forgiving, but long. Really long. But hears the best part. As the set gets to the PW and GW, its not as long. in fact, I didn't buy the 51* GW, the shaft was the same length as my 54* MD3, and the 54 went further. Probably the spin? I'm not that smart to tell you why, but I will tell you I love this set of irons. I'm actually thinking of adding the 5 iron (I went 6-AW) because the 6 is so easy to hit. My set up now is 3,4,5 hybrid, 6-AW. then 52, 58. The 52 has also opened my eyes. its way better on full swings then my old 54. I'm now thinking of going full time to a 52, 56 setup. At my level a 58 0r 60 aren't really helping, in fact they hurt more then anything because I get too "creative" for my skill set with them. The 56 is great on full (75-80) and bunker shots, and the 52 gives me a 90ish club, which has always been a need. Long story short, at least give the X's a try.
  15. People like that guy on WRX never played for any serious money. If he did, then he'd know "never bet the guy with old mix matched clubs,,, with lead tape and new grips."
  16. I was a rotation guy. Different look with each of my 3 putters. Center shafted Seemore FGP original, Blade style YES! Tracy, and a Guerin Rife two bar hybrid mallet. That changed literally a half hour ago, as I traded in all of them on second swing. A couple of weeks ago I had a putter fitting and the fitter recommended what I needed. He even told me he knew the putter that would be perfect for me, but it was a few cycles old, and he thought it would be hard to find because " lefty crank hosel mallets are very rare" Ha!!! He didn't know who he was talking to, LOL. It took me about an hour to go home, search, and find it. The Odyssey you see in my signature now. Not sure if it's new club magic, or this guy is a putting savant, but this thing is lights out so far.
  17. Give Golfworks a call. They should have the shaft, grip, and whatever else you need. Let them guide you through it. Have fun with dad, and post pics of the finished product.
  18. So I posted a few days ago with the first 3 scores with my new hybrids and irons. I played the Heathland at Legends Course in Myrtle Beach today. It was really hot and gusting about 20mph, yet the course was on the soggy side (???). These Rogue X are amazing. They play like a PING G series iron on steroids! Long, high and straight. I know this sounds crazy, but they feel as soft as my old Apex cf16 set, only at least a club longer. They come in so steep it's almost point and shoot with these things. I realize everyone has a different swing, just saying these are perfect for me. Anyone concerned about their distance should give these a try. Enough gushing about the arrows though. This Indian shot an 80! Could have been better too. I doubled 15 (short game screw up) and 3 putted 17 and 18 for bogeys. Aaagh shoulda been in the 70's.... Couldn't be happier though. The Apex were becoming too much work, and Steelhead's felt like rocks. Handicap is going down on the 1st
  19. If you ever come down to Myrtle Beach, "I have a guy..." He's an amazing fitter and loves to restore old Cameron's. If you like the murdered out look, you'd be amazed what he does. Very inexpensive also. Probably get a like new condition putter for under $50????
  20. @THEZIPR23 is a very good golfer, so the reason why they did that for him might differ from a mid or high cap player. His swing is so good any club only needs a tweak probably. Players on my level? A different story, sadly. I was told at the Callaway Performance Center we used to have on site in my golf community that I needed to play a 9 or 9.5 driver then loft up. The reason was raising the loft would close the face, which would help me square it up with my over the top swing. A 9 or 10.5 loft preset club would not help, although my "pull fade" had plenty of distance. Lofting down from say 12 to 10.5 would open the face and make things worse because of my out to in path. Fixing that path was/is the hardest thing for me. I still revert back to my "bad" swing quite often. TBH I think I might have been better served just swinging my swing. All the time and struggle to fix an ingrained move is really hard, and caused many frustrating moments.
  21. If I knew how to post it, I would, but check out her tweet to Gary yesterday. "You got this Gary..." ^^^edit Also meant to quote @Rickp to see her tweet
  22. New hybrids, irons and putter in the bag this week. I took them from the box to the course and shot a 90, 81 and 83 on the Barefoot Fazio, Love and Norman courses in Myrtle Beach. I'm really happy with the way my game is trending now. These clubs, and a new putter that a rep told me would be perfect for me have given me hope I'm coming out of a recent funk. Golf is a frustrating game for me. A lot of players at my level are streaky, but I'm exceedingly so. Hopefully the "new club magic" lasts for a while...
  23. This is such a good post. I realize due to the subject matter most of you discussing this are all really good players, but here's an older mid capper's point of view. I'm going to turn 65 in 9 days, and the last couple of years have seen a complete change in my iron/bag set up. I've gone from 3-PW S300 steel to a 3, then a4 hybrid. From MB's to Apex's, and then to a graphite Steelhead XR setup with a 5 hybrid, so it's been quite a ride, lol. I just bought a set of Rogue X irons, (which I laughed at when they were released) but after watching a 9 cap win the net version of our Club Championship, and another player come in 3rd place Gross with them in the bag, I changed my thinking. I decided I wanted the most forgiving, wide soled iron I felt comfortable with. I love everything about my new setup. The 3 new hybrids in my bag are great, the mid irons are a club longer, and the short irons are only slightly longer then my previous set, which has actually helped in spacing out my gapping. These clubs go long, high and straight, which is what I want. My hcp is dropping thanks to my improved iron play and wedge set up. I couldn't be happier. To each their own.... play what works for you. Getting older, playing soft courses at or below sea level, I'll take all the help I can get.
  24. Just browsing through this thread and I noticed in your WITB you were able to pick up the Steelhead XR #5 hybrid I recommended you try over in the Cleveland HB thread. How is it working out for you? Hope all is well...
  25. I had one of those "head scratchers" yesterday. Par on 1. Screwed up the 2nd hole, triple. All pars the rest of the front 9 except for the par 3 8th. I topped an 8 iron into a waste area between the tee and green. Hit my reload within 5 feet, but gagged on the putt, took a 5. Still, I was very happy with 5 over on the front. Then the wheels came off. The back 9 starts with par 5, 3, 5, and a really tough par 4. I went 9, 7, 8, 7 on them. I just completely lost my swing, which is becoming a problem at some point during almost every round I've played lately. Then just the way it left, it came back. I finished the last 5 holes 2 over, which made me feel a little better. The mid round collapse took me completely out of the running in the low net/gross competition I was playing in though. Now that it's over and done I'll chalk it up to being in the middle of a swing change, but that doesn't make it less frustrating when its happening in real time.
