mackdaddy got a reaction from Rob Person in How many balls do you carry?
I carry 4-6.  I used to carry a dozen or more for years until I started to fly with my clubs on trips and had to reduce weight for travel.  I realized I rarely used more than two balls in a round.  It is a rare day that I lose a ball and losing more than one is a super rare event.  I take more balls out of play for wedge scuffs than I lose.

Looks like feel play a big part in what we do. Learned that several years back during a titleist fitting. The fitter wanted to do some testing and experimenting with some things after my fitting since I as his last appointment and we both and traffic to fight I told him I had no problem staying and hitting more balls.
he changed the hosel settings on the driver but didn’t tell me what. My first swing the bal didn’t do what I expected it to do based on the fitting. Took another swing and same result. He goes you changed your swing to try and achieve your normal ball flight based on what you saw at address. Club was more closed than I was used to and I think he messed with lie angle too.

I also picked up 4-7 yards per club with the Chrome Tour over last years Pro V1x I played.

I tested balls all of my rounds in March.  I used the Pro v1 & X & Left Dash, TP 5 & X, Z Star, Tour Response, Chrome Soft, Chrome Tour & +.
About Me as a golfer.  I am 68 I hit the ball straight but can fade and draw the ball.  I can spin back L wedge to 9 iron back and prefer a hop and stop shot.  I play a new lob wedge each year and sand wedge every other year.  My irons are refinished KZG forged III with traditional lofts.  My lofts are 4 degrees between each club.  I drive it about 240 and can hit an intentional pull about 260.  My drives are straight, my miss is off the toe.  Wedges and Iron play are the strength of my game.
I played all of these balls at least 3 rounds.  What I was looking for was feel and spin from 90 yards to the green.  I only wanted a ball that I could predict what it would do after the bounce, did it stop or release or spin back.  Chrome tour X and Pro v1 x spun back more than I like to see.  Z Star released more than I liked and so did the Left dash and Tour Response.  Tp 5 x and Left dash felt to firm on the green side shots for me.
Irons and full swing wedges:  I liked the Tour Response and the Chrome Tour and the Pro v1x best.  They consistently responded as I like stopping on the green very quickly.
Long clubs and driver:  Chrome Tour and Tour Response were the straightest off the tee and with hybrids and fairways.  My dispersion with the Pro V1x was just bigger with the long clubs.
I played the Chrome Tour for 5 more rounds to be sure.  I tracked every shot and figured out all my yardages with each club.  I bought two four dozen boxes for the price of 3 dozen at Dick's sporting goods.  I am playing the Chrome Tour with triple track and I love them.

I think you might be pleasantly surprised by the new Chrome Tour. I was a white box tester of the Left Dots and loved it compared to ProV1. Allegedly the 2023 ProV1s chased a bit of the lower-flight/lower-spin properties of the Left Dot to get some of their Tour guys to switch, but notably Finau swapped back to Left Dot.
Compared to the 2023 ProV1, I've found the new Chrome Tour to have a bit more speed, very comparable long game spin, higher short game spin, and a very similar, flat flight. Overall, the Chrome Tour gave me right around a half club more carry through the bag.

I just bought a dozen last week and have them in the bag for my round tomorrow. I know they say it's kind of a variation of the CSXLS from last year. I was not a huge fan of that ball because of the durability and still seemingly high flight, so I am very excited to see how the Chrome Tour performs. Will definitely report back.

That's my experience exactly. I'm really hoping to have a good batch because there isn't much I hate more than hitting a great wedge and ripping the cover off the ball.

The lime green vice has may be my favorite color of all time on a ball.  With my swing speed creeping up I could probably make really good use of the pro+, as is I have several dozen X LS callaways that are my current gamer it will be a while before I change balls though.

I really love the Accra iS 7 shafts in my irons.  They time up very well for me and the feel is incredible.

Well this makes lots of sense.  I know that I can make most truly straight putts.  How many of those do I see in a round?  Only the ones where I miss the break low and have straight back up the slope.
So much of putting is matching line and speed.  I like die in or capture speed for my putts because I know if I leave my putts inside 3 feet I will make most second putts.   Living in the Greater Washington DC area the courses here tend to have very nice greens with challenging breaks and speeds or I won't play them.  We have so many great options.  Practicing with the same putter and routine is the biggest help for me now.  That said I have a custom build putter made just for me too.

Fitting is probably the smartest thing to do first. This will tell you a lot about what type of putters fit you (blade, mallet) and what neck type (slant, double-bend, etc.), not to mention length, lie, etc. I can not putt worth a damn with a toe-hang, blade style putter. However, you put a mallet style head with a double-bend neck and that is a different ball game based on my stroke type (straight back/through). Then just test those style of putters and find one that works for you, then find yourself the best deal. THEN...you will truly know what your "real" price range is 🙂

I wouldn't pay more than $175. It may be half the strokes, so maybe practice more if it's that important. Besides, I just bought within the last 6 months my forever putter. An Odyssey 11. Along with the clam shell grip, cured my yips.
This would be slightly off topic, but I might pay more for a lesson on a good way to read greens than an actual putter. I would go to an Aimpoint lesson if it didn't look so, uh, weird? I see the pros doing it and they still miss! I can see the advantage for short putts. However, I watch in amazement as they walk a long putt stopping every few feet. Makes me fast forward the golf telecast. Seems to me on long putts a general read and speed is way more important than analyzing every inch of the putt. I don't know where 70% make is, maybe 10 ft for the tour average? I wish someone with the stats would have a comparison on putting distance longer than where the stats point to worse than 70% make would have a comparison between aimpoint and just looking at it. And how long it takes.⛳
I have played the same greens for 23 years and still can't read them. With the change in grass type twice a year they putt totally different. Just when I think I have it down, the new grass comes in. Then for 6 weeks they putt about 6 on the stimp and then when finally cut to greens height, anywhere on any given day, 8-12. Plus the other courses in my old age community have a 2 totally different surface grasses than the military course I play the most. Speeds are totally different for all 4 courses. 🤣
Honestly, if I had to say one thing pros do better, it would be going to totally different putting surfaces as often as they do and still putting well.

I have worked in and out of the golf industry for years.  I have been a starter, marshal, club fitter, food and beverage manager and General manager.  I agree when you work full time in the golf industry you don't find much time to play.
I have found a job working one day a week as the counter person and over seeing the food and beverage operations for the pub not the events.  I am allowed to play whenever I want on weekdays and after 12 on weekends unless I fit in as a walk on without a set time.
The industry is work like any other job field and is fun if you work in a good team and environment.  Working for an owner that is barely making ends meet is hard.  Working in an operation that has money and an open mind is great.  I have worked in the military and restaurant business as an owner for many years.  The leader sets the pace in all businesses.
