Taylormade MG3 wedge vs Bombtech wedges

Recommended Posts

When I really got back into golf last year, I wanted a set of wedges and the price point of the Bombtech fit the bill. You get a 52, 56 & 60 degree for just over $100 (I think it was $107 plus shipping). They definitely served their purpose and they allowed me to see what wedges were, how having a full set could really benefit me and allowed me to play around with a lot of shot options (sand, flops etc). The clubs were relatively easy to hit and considering what I didn't know, they seemed just fine.

Fast forward to about 2 months ago when a guy at work came to me about some clubs he got out an abandoned storage unit he purchased. Decent set for $100 (old Titleist AP1s and nice Mixuno bag) but the bonus was that there was a 56 degree Taylormade MG in it. I played around with the clubs in my garage and I couldn't believe how well and easy I could hit the MG wedge. I really dug into the differences between it and my Bombtech using stats from my Skytrak. Hitting the MG was, for lack of a better word, effortless. Keep in mind that I am far from a great golfer but I know technology and math. I was damn near dead straight on almost every shot with the MG whereas the Bombtech had a much larger dispersion. The biggest thing I noticed was the backspin...the MG was coming in with a way higher backspin and a very consistent basis (1k-1.5k higher). I never would've thought there could be such a difference between clubs like that but you really do get what you pay for.

I went searching for a 52 and 60 to complete the MG set. I luckily found someone selling used MG3 TW (Tiger Woods) but the TW ones only come in 56 & 60. I then found a 52 at a local golf shop that was a demo so now I have a full set of MG3 wedges and cannot be happier. Bottom line is that you can get by with some cheaper clubs but if you look around and do your homework, you can find something that you will likely benefit from a lot more for not a massive price hike. As I mentioned, the Bombtechs were a little over $100 where the used set of MG3 (that were in very very good condition) ran me about $210. The extra money is well worth it for the confidence I've gained in my wedge play. I hope this helps someone out.

I purchased the Bombtech 3 wedge set for the same reasons you did. Decent clubs at a very reasonable price point.

I played with a guy today who had originally bought the Bombtech wedges and like them so much he replaced his Stix irons with the Bombtech irons. He said he likes them quite a bit.
