  1. Fun fact: Wright and Ditson is featured prominently in "The Greatest Game Ever Played." Both the book and the movie. It's the retail store where Francis Ouimet worked. It can be seen on the side of the delivery carriage when Ouimet delivers irons to The Country Club. It's a commonly known "secret" that George Wright had Ouimet on the sporting goods store payroll for the purposes of branding and brand awareness. Wright fully funded Ouimet's amateur golf career leading up to and during the 1913 US Open. In exchange, Ouimet would bring brand awareness to the golf equipment Spalding (and Wright and Ditson) were selling.
  2. My last regularly scheduled treatment is tomorrow morning. My Oncologist released me to play some golf last Thursday, with some explicit instructions. He's an avid golfer so he understands. Play from the senior tees for now. No swing over 75%, but would prefer 65% max. Limit myself to about 6 holes or less so not to overdo things. Drink plenty of fluids. Walk, no cart. He wants me to begin the process of building my strength back up. Walking 6 holes of golf every afternoon is a great place to start. My bloodwork has done a complete one-eighty in the past two weeks. I feel amazing. Don't quite have the strength or stamina I would like but I feel really good. Based on the rapid turnaround of my bloodwork, he now wants me to have two scheduled "maintenance" treatments. One in November and the last in January with a PET Scan about 6 weeks later to make sure we got everything. It has been such a blessing to be able to get outside and enjoy myself again these past five days. It has done wonders for my mental stability. Things are really looking good for the moment.
  3. Jon Rahm gets to pick all 11 of his teammates in Italy after this week, right?
  4. Apparently, Spieth almost did on the first hole this morning. Some American fan went way over the top on some comments to Rahm and Garcia. Spieth stopped, turned and chewed his ass out. Featured Groups on Peacock are pretty great.
  5. The golf course is phenomenal. No issue there, whatsoever. I think the issue, albeit very muted and minor, is atmosphere. It's not as fan friendly as many other options and doesn't provide the same type of home course advantage as somewhere like Medinah. The layout doesn't allow fans to frame the hole, which can be a huge advantage for the host squad. Limited vantage points for fans to gather in mass. As No Laying Up has reported from on-site, several broken bones among the spectators already this week. Also, you can't put fans in Lake Michigan.
  6. Herb Kohler has deep pockets and typically gets what he wants.
  7. I am three treatments into what will be a five week cycle ending September 30, followed by about a year of by-monthly maintenance treatments. The guru at UVA sent a tissue sample to a colleague at Johns Hopkins. It is confirmed Pediatric Follicular Lymphoma. Those two also seem pretty convinced this is a direct result of my having Lyme Disease in 2012. They are seeing more and more of these oddball forms of lymphoma popping up in people a decade following Lyme diagnosis. Treatment days and the day after are pretty rough. Nauseated, anemic, and weak with no energy or stamina. Sort of feels like a mild case of the flu. But nothing close to what it would be with a full cycle with a chemo cocktail. The anemia sucks. Jittery feeling most days but it's getting better as the bloodwork begins to regulate a bit as we get further into the process. Beginning to feel better quicker following treatments. I was able to mow my yard on Saturday which felt like an enormous victory. I was completely wiped out afterward but still felt good to be able to accomplish something. At this point, I'm just trying to put my head down and plow through it. It's nice to see some light at the end of the tunnel as I begin to feel better. The well wishes are very much appreciated!!!
  8. Reading comprehension must be an issue today. Sagstrom was wrong for picking the ball up, as I stated in my original post (linked). That doesn’t change my opinion that common sense should outweigh a rule that was probably enforced where nobody needed it to be. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. The better team won regardless. Im done! Probably for a good long while.
  9. It was a “rule” in search of a problem. And I’m not the only one complaining about it. Seems your doing your fair share, especially when anyone has an opinion that dares to differ from yours!
  10. I couldn’t care less what was agreed upon, common sense should always prevail. In this case, it didn’t. That ball had absolutely no chance of going in!
  11. Two wrongs don’t make a right!!! The ball had absolutely no chance of going in but the overzealous rules official decided to intervene anyway. But Sagstrom should never have picked the ball up either. Just another shining example of how golf tends to get in its own way sometimes.
  12. When she plays this well, she deserves her name to be spelled correctly. Leona effing Maguire!!!
  13. Leona McGuire is a straight up serial killer!!!
  14. No worries, man. I understand. It could be a lot worse.
  15. Women’s golf is wildly entertaining. If it were covered with half as much fervor as the PGA Tour, more people would be able to see that. Equal talent, better personalities, better human beings, who are far more approachable and relatable than anyone on the PGA Tour.
  16. I question the coaching decision to put Salas/Kupcho out ahead of Kang/Ernst. I get wanting to put the hot team of Salas/Kupcho up against the hot EU team of McGuire/Reid but it could also frustrate Kang/Ernst having to play behind Salas all afternoon.
  17. It’s been hard to keep my energy levels up. I get tired often and very quickly. I played golf until I just couldn’t anymore. August 19 was the last time I played. I made it 5 holes and it took a half-hour sitting under a tree to get enough energy up to walk back to the clubhouse. Where it took another half-hour sitting on the front porch to regain enough energy to put my things away and drive home. Lots of recommendations going forward from some of the leading lymphoma doctors in this region. Eliminate red meat, carbohydrates, carbonation, and concentrated sugars while pushing for a pescatarian diet. Nothing unrealistic but still something of a sacrifice. Glad to finally be getting treatment but anxious to hear what the expert at UVA discovers.
  18. I’ve struggled mentally for the past few months. During a routine cleaning in April, my dentist found a jelly-bean sized lump in my neck. After visits to my PCP and a specialist, I received a needle aspiration biopsy. By the time we got to that point, the jelly-bean sized mass was now golf ball sized. The results showed the mass was not cancerous but was lymphatic matter. Which is unusual for adults considering the mass is halfway between my adams apple and chin, right in the center of my neck. Lymph nodes in adults should be more to the sides. The following weeks, I had a CT Scan, PET Scan, Echo, EKG, and finally, surgical biopsy to remove the lymph nodes. In mid August, I was tentatively diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma while awaiting dissection and pathology of the lymph nodes. A port-a-cath was installed August 27 with Chemo treatments scheduled to begin September 2nd. When I arrived Thursday for my initial chemo treatment, I learned that pathology had been done, including a second opinion. Further tissue has been sent to a world renowned Lymphoma specialist at UVA for yet another opinion. I also signed paperwork Thursday to have another tissue sample sent to the National Cancer Institute for further study. While still awaiting the opinion of the guy at UVA, I was tentatively reclassified Thursday as having Pediatric Follicular Lymphoma, which is exceedingly rare in people over the age of 17. I’m 46! Full blown Chemo was shelved and I received a 7-bag regimen of Rituximab. Rituxin is far less harmful to the body. No hair loss, mild nausea, but highly effective for passive forms of cancer. Working hard to stay positive. As long as UVA doesn’t find something different, my regimen will be 4 Rituximab IV treatments over 4-weeks followed by regular maintenance and check-ups. Prognosis is excellent but still a shock to the system. Plus, I’ve lost my golf season right at the beginning of my favorite time of year. Nothing better than fall golf in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
  19. It's akin to those old Go Daddy commercials Parsons used to put out during the Super Bowl. They target a specific audience. I'm obviously not that audience.
  20. I have been a member for 16 years. Never had an assessment and my yearly dues have gone up once. That dues increase was $85 annually I think. But we're fortunate and likely not the norm across the industry. Especially, as you correctly point out, for a stock/equity club model. We have absolutely no debt and an avid membership with a median age of around 54. But that median age isn't likely to decrease anytime soon. I don't foresee the club incurring debt anytime soon either though. We don't have restaurant services, food, beverage, tennis, fitness, etc. to clutter the bottom line. We do golf and nothing more. But we still need to attract some younger members to counterbalance the aging membership. We are doing a pretty good job of that at the moment. Time will tell if that continues to be the case. In my opinion, it will be determined by how successful the region is in keeping young professionals from relocating to more populated areas with more of a nightlife. That's been a growing problem over the past two decades. I fear, it will only increase. We do have one thing in our favor. We host a rather large annual Open tournament every August open to professional or amateur entrants. The club makes a considerable profit from this tournament. If my math is correct, the 2021 installment will be the 59th annual. It's an impressive event.
  21. I listened a few weeks ago. Wasn't impressed. Parson's has made a fortune from schtick. Good for him. It's not for me, bias or no bias!
  22. I apologize if my comments were inappropriate. They weren't intended to be. I'm blunt and sometimes, don't read my postings prior to submitting. Semantics can be a ****** sometimes. I took your comment as a national lockdown of golf courses. You were likely speaking more in general terms of locking down society. Regardless, please don't leave on my account. I may be blunt and sometimes an ******* but I'm reasonable and almost always respectful. Call me out on my BS and let's move on!
  23. We do a bit of work with some golf course "architects" from time to time. One local guy in North Carolina is known for restoring old Ross designs. He is currently bringing a handful of abandoned courses back to life in and around the Pinehurst / Southern Pines area for this very reason. Demand, at the moment, is much higher than supply. Edit to add Instagram link I finally found. https://www.instagram.com/p/CRUlVrEtQpb/
  24. Cheaper and more effective (for me) than therapy!!!
