  1. I'll jump in here.... there are A LOT of good points here from folks I have come to respect from conversing on the MGS forums. One of the conundrums we face here is the, "bad practice only creates bad habits" vs., "any practice is good practice" philosophies. There are some ... arts where I COMPLETELY agree that bad practice will only hurt you (Martial Arts, Cross-Fit, weight lifting), in golf I would agree with the "any practice" school to a pretty deep degree. I personally HATE mats...BUT... I'll take a mat over no swing practice at all. I have mat in my back yard and some of the course up north have installed mats, only using the grass area during certain parts of the season. I agree with the comments on the fat shot compensation as well; which is one of the reasons I HATE mats; when I am having problems with contact it drives me NUTS to have to play from a mat, so I work with half swing contact moving into full swings and I get REALLY focused on hitting the ball first (so, good point here is that I get focused on making contact with the ball first therefore eliminating fat shots becomes the goal and the eventual outcome). The other thing I learned this past summer was the effect on my clubs. If you look back to my comments on Sqairz, I really liked the comfort of the shoes, but I was having an issue with contact when I started wearing them. This drive me to have my clubs checked. I was also experiencing some serious loss of distance with my PW. So I decided to have my clubs looked at. My clubs are normally set a standard lie angle, on analysis my 3 & 5 irons had moved to 1 degree upright, 6-PW irons moved to 2 degrees upright. I think these clubs were delivered in March? That was a 2 degree movement in less than 4 months. There was no change to loft, so I could not blew the loss of distance with my PW on this, but what the heck was going on with this lie angle change? The tech at the shop asked me if I hit from mats often and told me that when he was on the college team they would have their clubs checked and adjusted at least twice a year, each time they had them regripped. He said the impact on club lie angle from hitting off mats was common knowledge. That made me think, WTF? Do the courses really know this is a side effect of moving to mats? Anyway, I agree, hitting off mats is better than not getting some range time in, but be aware of both the difference you mention between mats and grass AND the potential impact on your club loft and lie angles. The more you bleed in practice, the less you bleed in real world action. Practice wherever and whenever you can. Then practice twice as much, when you can, in the conditions you will really face. Good luck and don't give up the ship.
  2. Man I am jealous if those of you in the warmer areas. I drives me crazy that I haven't played in 4-weeks; almost played Monday, but it was mod-50s, overcast and windy and soggy from a couple of days of rain so I (probably wisely) decided it was a no go. I should get some rounds in next week or so and then start getting some rounds in while traveling to the warmer weather areas of the country. Winter sucks!
  3. @bens197 @cnosil @Javs Javs may blow it by us on the regular, but playing with him on this hole we press that 3W with 3 Drivers smooth down the right side of that 2nd bunker making him feel like he has to keep up. He chunks his driver catching the end of the 2nd bunker not quite carrying 300 ending up in a fried egg lie and we are all over him with fairway shots into the green
  4. Interesting reading through here. @Javsman that 2nd bunker from the tips is 300+ to carry! I am calling Wheaties Monday and having all shipments to your state suspended until the rest of us can catch up Playing Black or Orange tees: If it is a back pin, probably 3w over the end tip of the 1st bunker leaving a long 2nd shot I can run up to the back. Middle or front pin, Driver aimed down the right side of the 2nd bunker. Mid- long iron to carry the front 1/3rd or middle of the green so it rolls up or comes back off the slope at the back. Looks like a fun hole. Wind and weather would definitely be considerations with all the potential trouble here.
  5. I dond this interesting because, while I can stop Irons all the way up to and including my 3I from a nice lie in the fairway, I definitely find that when I tee an iron (from the box of course) it gives me that much more control. Probably because there is very little chance of anything getting between the iron face and the ball. But hey, everybody's stroke is a bit different so what works for me...interesting how our results differ. Cheers
  6. I have tried Titleist, TM, Callaway, PXG, and a multitude of others in the last couple of years. Admittedly the latest models I tried did not include the Paradym or newest Titleist, but the closest I came to my gamer (G400 with the Evenflow black) has been a ZX7. NOTHING has been as consistent, distance or dispersion, as that combo. The only reason I really tried was when the shaft broke I found out that they are no longer making the Evenflow black and I have no idea what combo would replace that. So, although I tried, I just pray that the shaft holds up so I don't have to settle for the next best thing to my PING. You just can't deny performance.
  7. Hot that text earlier today a s then got sidetracked from completing the order. From the experience Ive had with these shoes I would say this is definitely a good deal.
  8. 2 fingers of local bourbon last night. Might should have been 4 fingers, but All that was missing was a good cigar
  9. Oh man, I hate tucking shirts in. I feel constricted. Actually one of the reasons I've taken to Untuckit shirts for casual wear. They are well made, comfortable, and made to be left untucked I haven't tried theor polo/golf shirts yet.
  10. Lots of good comments here. I have been using Swing U since it was SwingbySwing for the basic, fairways hit missed (left/right), GIR etc. stats. Been using ShotScope for couple of years now for the deeper details, but I other than the putting detail I really don't know if I am doing anything with the details and data; so Swing U is great for keeping the basic stats, score and it even has green contour for quite a few courses I play. And they recently added Strokes Gained. The problem I had with the paid GHIN App is that there were too many courses where my signal didn't support it or the App was just not connecting or kept restarting. In my experience the GHIN App was not with the $$. I have been trying to play with The Grint App lately to see if I like that one or not. I wish I could go back to the days of pacing off distances and not worrying about all the tech stuff, but new toys are so much fun
  11. I have been trying to find an excuse to come back up that way, and drag my bag with me, but work and honey-do lists are holding me back. May the rest of your season be sunny and dry ladies and gents.
  12. Congrats all and good luck on the is last event. It was fun!

  14. I will second those sentiments aimed at my team mates. well said sir.
  15. Hopefully you skirted the tropical storm weather. Though it was "fun"
  16. I got one (the tools shown) in the box with my order. Getting ready to order replacement cleats, but interestingly enough, the cleats on these shoes are in better condition than those on any other shoe that I have owned and worn as much as these.
  17. Funny you said that. It was an interesting week of golf. Played a par-3 night round Wednesday evening and I shot -1 at the end with 2 bogeys. Got rained out Thursday; played Friday and Saturday with a tropical storm going through and missed the cut to play TPC Myrtle Beach Sunday, but had a heck of a "consolation" round at another course to roll it all up. Sometimes I wonder why I play this game LOL!

Nice course though. Greens roll nice and the course is tough but fair. Having a real problem understanding why my shots are carrying 1 to 1.5 clubs short. Some say the humidity = thicker, heavier air, but I don't see this in FL so???
  20. Hope it all comes out to be benign. This stuff sucks.
  21. Little a.m. run to get everything moving. A bit of work this morning followed by a Par 3 match tonight in the lights, then 4 days of digging up turf and hacking away at someone's nicely manicured landscaping. Hopefully one or two will be worthy of inclusion in the VCT and Match Play sections. Hope you all have a wonderful, sunny week.
  22. Yeah, I still get handed that one. I keep telling "them" I play very well with others, I just don't play well with morons. Well, i am sure you know the responses that assertion engenders. Have a GREAT week sir.
