  1. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if Norman used them. And if that was the case, I would imagine that that stigmatized them as well.
  2. Hit up the range on my lunch break, so here's the video (back and side view included): I didn't realize until after I pulled out my driver at the range, after warming up, that I forgot to buy foot spray so I'll have to go back later this week to do that, but from the still frames in the video both of these shots were quite high on the club face. My initial thought from the head-on view is that moving the ball up in my stance will both fix that and help give more of a positive angle of attack, but I'm looking forward to hearing what others think.
  3. What irons were you playing before you got the Sub70s, and how do they compare?
  4. I would guess that the increased launch angle and decrease in backspin make up for the loss in ball speed, but I imagine that that isn't true for everyone's launch conditions.
  5. I'm planning on hitting the range tomorrow after work, so I'll get some videos then (along with info for each video about face impact location and shot shape). In the meantime, for other folks following along who may be having similar struggles I found these charts very enlightening (apparently generated with tests from a swing robot and a Trackman): The graphics are about 5 years old, and there was no indication of what driver was used in the tests (I imagine newer clubs reduce the impact of off-center strikes) but it's still a helpful indicator of the effect of mishits with the driver.
  6. FIFY. Picked up a 52° Cleveland CBX yesterday to round out the bottom of my bag. Those things are so dang easy to hit.
  7. Sounds like I need a combination of lessons and some time on a better launch monitor so I can get more info about attack angle, dynamic loft, and face angle. I'm using a Nike Vapor Speed set to 9.5° with a Fubuki Z50 stiff shaft. My miss is a pull draw, so I don't think I'm leaving the club face open - I think I'm probably getting low and heel side on the club face, but I'll hit the range with some foot spray this week and find out for sure.
  8. Just spent an hour and a half at an indoor range trying to sort out gaps in my bag. The main thing I noticed is that my distance is all over the place on my irons (high handicap on GI irons, so that's to be expected I guess) but one thing that bothered me was my lack of driver distance. According to the system my swing speed is consistently in the 100-105 mph range, and while I admittedly struggle with making good contact, even the times I did I was rarely getting more than 220 yards of carry. The best shot I had was 106 mph club head speed, 13.8° launch angle, and only 228 yards of carry, and it felt like I hit it right on the sweet spot. Meanwhile, my best shot with my 5-iron carried 189 yards. So, what gives? Do I need to get fitted for a new driver? (unfortunately not financially feasible right now) Is it potentially a mental thing with swinging indoors? Is it an issue with the launch monitor overestimating my swing speed? (it was the built-in-to-the-ground style with three lines of infrared sensors) Can bad form take that much off my carry distance, even if I'm generating a decent amount of clubhead speed? Are all the online charts comparing swing speed to carry distance off a ways?
  9. I initially read this as a "toe-wedge", and assumed it was a new variant of the classic "foot wedge".
  10. What's wrong with only using a 58° around the green? I mean, the fact that I do it may have something to do with it being the only club with more loft than my 47° GW, but still...
  11. I'm with you in that I don't see the benefit here. It's a shot I have in the bag, but I'd use it when I'm just off the fringe so that the ball can land on the fringe or green and bounce more predictably.
  12. Made a ShotTracer video of my brother totally shanking a 7-iron off the tee once - that was good for a few laughs when shared on the family WhatsApp chat.
  13. You look like the rat too? Man, the longer this thread goes on the more convinced I am that I made the right choice!
  14. I dunno, I'm picturing @B.Boston more like this:
  15. Looks like I found my guy! And outing GB13 as a Bama fan is just a nice bonus!
  16. I'm going to pick who I'm backing based solely on who their favorite sports mascot is. So, let's hear it!
  17. I'll go first - if I was in charge of marketing for Flair Hair I would've signed him up years ago! https://www.amazon.com/Flair-Hair-Mens-Visor-White/dp/B00NLOMVI6/ But I'm sure someone has a better answer than that!
  18. Since poor Ian Poulter didn't get any votes in the "Who would you want as the face of your golf company?" poll on the main forum page, it got me thinking: what product or company would you sign Ian Poulter to represent if you were in charge of marketing?
  19. My first thought was 3 Wood off the deck, but then I realized that that shot is very consistent - it consistently sucks! For me it's probably trying to play a draw to get out of trouble when I'm in the trees on the left side of the fairway and still want to hit the green in two. Seems like it's 50/50 whether the shot does what I want, or I launch a bomb that goes dead straight and ends up two fairways over.
  20. This is common in any pro sport, not specific to golf. There will always be some manufacturing variances, and most of the time an amateur would never even notice, but a pro can feel the difference. In downhill ski racing for example, pros (or their equipment managers) will get access to basically the full stock of off-the-line equipment. Due to the ski construction process (fiberglass/carbon/wood/metal laminates) every ski is different - the differences are probably less than 1%, but when you're racing with margins of 100ths of a second that matters. The pros will hand inspect and flex text thousands of skis, and then take for themselves the 20 or so that they like best to get them through the season. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some pros who are testing multiples of the exact same shaft to find one that feels best, because due to the manufacturing process the flex or balance point might be 0.5 cm further up or down the shaft then what is advertised.
  21. Yep. I've plugged tee shots into the middle of the fairway more than you would expect - one time I only found it because I stepped on it. But yeah, if the whole group agrees that it was a good shot that just disappeared (hiding under a leaf or grass clippings next to the fairway, plugged in the fairway, etc) then you get a free "gallery drop".
  22. It depends what "look good" means. If it means "attractive" then no. But there is definitely a "look" to a putter in terms of alignment (since I strongly prefer mallets) that allows me to more easily see if I'm aligned with my target line. Color for me plays a big part of it - if the alignment aid doesn't incorporate white (either a white alignment line, or a black/colored alignment line on a wider white line) then it doesn't "look good" while I'm standing over it and I'm not comfortable and confident in my stroke.
  23. And don't forget, you can only wear them between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
  24. Do you do it, and are you successful? Used to golf in your standard Nike running shoes, and my feet would be all over the place off every tee. Still don't own golf shoes, but I wear my Salomon Speedcross 4 GTX trail runners and they are great - the lugs are spaced far enough apart and are long enough apart that I don't have any issues. Plus they're way more comfortable than the Adidas spikeless shoes I tried for a round and a half. What non-golf shoes do you golf in?
