  1. I quite like the Srixon range. I play AD333 in winter and I was positive with XV , Z star just doesn’t float my boat. Tonight I tried Q star tour …. Well that extra layer and cover doesn’t make it spin more than an AD333 around the greens . It might pop up but it doesn’t stop XV does check as does AD333 even on small half/ soft shots but the Q star tour really failed. Even on full iron shots it offered nothing over and above the AD333. Which leaves me in a bit of a quandary as I need something spinny for summer due the poor green prep and maintenance.

  2. My personal opinion on swingspeed breaking shafts is … nah the differences we perceive are far bigger than the overall strength of the shaft. Humans in general are very sensitive, even the emotionally deficient ones. There will be always a safety margin in there and I really think they don’t calculate the durability in that manner … but I am sure a shaft design engineer could shed more light on it.

I did break the autoflex, but that was instantly replaced, suggesting it is a common fault that they are willing to accept warranty on .. or the shaft is so hideously overpriced they are wealthy as oil sheikhs

  3. To be honest work is work, if it’s fun that’s good. But in the end work is only to pay for other interests, and yes I have become a self employed mercenary and it suits but also allows me to deliver the answer and not the method which they may be able to replicate . The tools and processes stay in my control.

Depends on how you look at it. If you went into it thinking you would get paid for everything that you came up with would get you paid everytime it was used then probably or at least the wrong place of employment.

Most artists don’t own their masters, the record label does. The record label gets the money for sales and uses and the artist gets a percentage of that.

I did it because I have that way of thinking and working.

So that lazy people or those looking to make money without doing the work can’t steal from the creator.

Imagine spending hours upon hours creating something and then someone comes, takes what you created and strata selling it and taking credit for it and now you lose out on potential earnings and/or recognition for your hard work.

Not really that hard of a concept to understand why it’s protected so hard

But why limit to those items ? Why are the engineers who developed the lift or escalators not paid every time they are used ?

  6. I had my worst driving experience last night, but to be honest when you know how good it can be, then you just have to admit that it’s not the club.

The last 2 drives I took some time on my swing path and position and I was back in the groove … but I won’t lie, I was worried that the poor tee shots were going to ruin my round.
So basically it’s a case of finding something that you can and know can perform .. with a little effort. Which makes me wonder about the whole fitting process, as it’s so easy to be off the script … so you need or at least I do, some room for error.  I think I have that with this set up.

  7. Sorry I have not weighed mine and not fed back any numbers.

I currently play epic speed head std 9 degree head 5 g back weight

    GBPL - 45 L 46.5 “

grip is lamkin sonar tour standard , 2 layers of tape

    std Callaway epic speed adapter

I am set at 8 degrees N or standard.

I don’t want to take it apart, it’s magical 🥰 club head speed … more than before, ball speed higher, FIR up .. happiness level = orgasmic

I am thinking this year could see me returning to low singles when coupled with my swing path improvement. ( yes swing path has added swing speed increase as well … unknown though, I just accept it with good grace )

Had the chance to take out the G430 demo over the weekend.  It was the nine degree head with and Alta CB 55 gram shaft in "S" flex.  I swung at a dozen or so with the Alta but didn't really care for it and was hitting it too low.  Adjusted the loft up to the big plus setting but still just didn't hit it very good.

Just not a good fit I guess which is OK.

Plugged the Pro Launch Blue in and hit it great from the first swing.  Hit about fifteen more balls on the range that all were just effortless high long and straight to a few baby draws.  Was really excited heading to the first tee and then it all went to crap.

Hit a few popups and some smother hooks and just couldn't regain a feel for it although my brother was absolutely killing it.

Just one of those things and certainly no fault of the club or the shaft.

Anyways, went back yesterday and started hitting it great again on the range right from the jump.  Decided to loft down to the stock nine degree setting and it got even better.

Headed to the first tee again and only hit one bad drive the entire round - a popup off of ten tee.  Everything else was really good and picked up an average of more than twenty yards overall for the round (throwing out the popup) and had a 292, two more over 270 and five in the 260 range which is pretty good for me these days.

I had mentioned previously that the G425 Max head felt really heavy with the Pro Launch but didn't find that to be the case with the G430 Max. Pulled both of the backweights and the G425 was 29 grams and the G430 was 25.

I dunno if four grams should seem that evident in my hands but it sure seem to.

Gonna play again this afternoon but am pretty sure I'm gonna go ahead and order the nine degree G430 Max and will likely go with the Alta Soft Regular just for experimentation sake although I fully expect the Pro Launch to win out.

Also going to order 5, 7 and 9 woods with the same shaft.

    God I love new toys!

That sounds really positive! I think there is a tipping point and 4g is enough. But I also think the GPLB is more resistant, in std form it’s pretty stout or boardy … so in my view if your selecting a shaft, head in the direction of something that feels like that if your head weight is going to exceed 198g .. or step another flex down on it.
If I had the resources and time, I would pull a matrix of shaft and heads together .. for me this is a fundamental rethink as to how we go about building our drivers up.  The fitters and big outlets are not really pursuing this .. I mean selling a 400-1000 dollar shaft to someone is more profitable than popping them into a 70 dollar one.

Although there is a competitive streak in me that says, keep quiet keep hitting beyond them … it is the elixir of youth 🤣🤣 .. shot my first single digit round at the weekend for a long time and that was on porridge greens and no birdies ( so short game was totally buggered- the scratchers were not breaking par)

The PXG setting is 3* flat. The small + is .75* added loft and the large + is 1.5*. To take off loft it’s the same amount subtracted loft with the ~ settings.

I don’t want to loft up too much or down, to be honest I just need to get a bit more upright, I will have a fiddle at the range one evening to see if I can get a setup. I am currently really missing that yardage gap, come summer it may get me on the 5’s for eagles, which is a major help.

I also need to put a 4 iron in my bag, I just cannot use a hybrid as they just seem to go left on me. I have a 3 iron Ping crossover and it’s working nicely so I was thinking a 4 would be an excellent addition… it may make the 7 wood a bit redundant.

  10. This setup is getting better and better, the sun came out for a few days and the fairways started to firm up. The distances and carry are really helping me. It’s a total game changer, instead of playing to go through a narrow section, I just fly it.

Yesterday I just played easily and the distances were 260 yards no effort, then 280 yards with a bit of effort. Loving it and it’s migrating through my bag.

  11. Played yesterday in some club charity competition. My tempo was off and my irons were just straight pulls, wasn’t dropping at the top because I was getting a bit quick. Sorted that out.

Driving was very good, Playing partner was complaining about his flight with his Ping 410. He hit a low ball and looked to be using a Tensai orange … I just said to him he would get more height if he did a bit of shaft investigations. Explained to him my set up … he had a look, must of dismissed it as snake oil 🤣🤣

I will keep my mouth shut now, they already think I have escaped from the asylum.

I didn't, and that is still weighing on me a little. I have it tipped up for the PXG so I'd have to either buy an extra shaft or take mine apart which I'd rather not do. I really wanted one of the Cobras to work based on the reviews and always having had a thing for Cobra gear. TBH, I just haven't loved the shapes of the newer Cobra heads since about the F8. The pointier back side just doesn't suit my eye like the rounded PXG or TM's. If maybe the #'s were that much better I might make exceptions.

One thing I might still consider is taking my dad's Cypher 50g A flex from his RAD and seeing if that gets me any closer to what I'm after in the LTDx.. and then I'd consider the PLB switcheroo.

    2 things …

Weigh the head of both PXG and Cobras … PXG 0311 works , so it’s the blueprint. I think PXG make good stuff, but we all like a change 🤭. If the cobra head you want is within 2-4 grams , all you have to be concerned about is spin and that’s related to the loft.
Why not do as you intend with your Dad’s shaft but hit his RAD dialled down in loft .Then you know ball park loft and could get the club off the shelf as it were ( so LTD x 7-10 degrees, cypher 50g A or may be another light shaft option they have ) ?
Don’t worry too much about off centre strikes, just fiddle with your positioning or look to shorten ( I know longer shafts equate to distance, and modern clubs don’t drop off too much round centre … but centre still is best) .

Would be good to build a catalogue of combinations that could possibly work for everyone and then they can dive in with minimal fiddling…

  13. To be fair there are more expensive shafts to pursue this, I am lucky, GPL B fits me really well. I wouldn’t touch it in stiff , may be regular but the principle is to shed weight and going down flexes gets you their.

I truly believe that we all can find a light weight shaft with the right bend profile and feel. The trajectory and spin can be optimised via loft and ball ..

The Callaway heads are directionally the right way to go, as they can be weighted up and down , and come in various spin levels, have several adapter options and can be picked up on the 2nd hand market relatively cheaply ( my 9 degree epic speed - good condition was £130) so I have a monster driver at £200 and an AF driver at £650 + ( which I could offload at £450 minimum)

Sorry I also like to wheel and deal on my golf stuff, totally pointless but I get a buzz from it.

  14. I was a bit brief in my post, due time constraints.

Regards feel, AF feels heavier, but across the whole club. When it comes to impact feel both feel okay, as in medium firm. I think OP is less reactive to miss timed strikes. AF shuffles but holds line and direction. By shuffling I mean you get an after burst of vibration feedback. OP does that as well and still holds the line but I think has a higher resilience than AF.

My test yesterday was on the range, hit less than 5 shots with each and then swap back and forth in less than 20 shots. I then played a few holes with OP. Of the 7 holes I played I hit OP 3 times.
The first I was out the heel, bit of feedback but fairway right side, beyond where I have been averaging ( I don’t go full out on the first, so I play more club but easy off the tee .. unless I have started on the back nine ) . The second I was straight into the wind, and the lower trajectory definitely improved my distance, it was middle of the face but a little open so a little right and I was shut out a bit on the 2nd. I think I was a little concerned on the tee so didn’t really follow through. The final shot, which was down a par 5 and with an assisting wind at 1-2 o’clock, I just relaxed and sent. Nice straight flight, nice height, no line deviation and landing angle looked reasonable.. but little roll due to the perpetual rain . I think it carried 250 + , so when it firms up that could well get me in range for an eagle opportunity or a chip up birdie.

This par 5 has alway been a problem, in that it has always shown the disparity between my driver and fairway woods. I would get 240-250 with the driver , then have 290-320 to go and a 7 wood would either have me just short or over the back.  I didn’t have anything less that was long enough to fly the protective bunkers , so ended up laying up with a 6 or 7 iron to give 120 or less in .  So when you hit mega 7 woods and 5 woods , your left scratching your head as in .. that went 290 why didn’t my driver go further than 250 ?!? Hopefully that conundrum is resolved and I get 280-290 from the driver and then a 4-5 iron will do the rest.

Time will tell, but I think this is a good start to the season and hopefully not a perennial concern I have had every season about the driver.

  15. Finally all components arrived. Autoflex SF505 with tour adapter, and 9 degree epic speed head.

Set the 9 degree head at -1 N on the OP and the 10.5 head to -2N on AF.

No tinkering required… flights even though down wind were lower and more boring I think OP was an around 20 ft higher than I preferred so the set up now is or looks bang in the window.
AF set up the same flight as OP visually.

Distance , well both are good/ better due to the trajectory optimisation.

I have two very playable set ups here I don’t think there is much to choose from either except cost.

The optimisation has seen a distance increase definitely a ball speed improvement due to lower lofts.

Will try and get objective numbers in the next few weeks … but OP is staying in the bag.

  16. Impatience and the flight into the wind has got the better of me, and I have just purchased a 9 degree epic speed head to try… I figured I will unload the one that doesn’t deliver. I think I am all in on the GPLB due to its launch characteristics and feel. So now I am optimising the head loft , 10.5 dropped to 9.5 is still high, hence looking at the 9 degree. Which could be adjusted to 8 degrees .. or set at 9 which should be similar.
The next stage is to look at low spin or low launch golf balls - but this is only if I want to bring the height down a bit further.
On a side note, I noticed my tempo was a bit off, as I hadn’t been hitting the driver, so I need to just introduce this in to my routine.
