  1. I would say yes.

It has a power to resuscitate or crush you…

My own experience is it has taken me to highs and dragged me off the bottom of my lows.

The best rounds are at the forefront of my memory, they are the moments I play back and enjoy.

  2. I keep seeing this, play to your distance and to be honest, I agree.
My old course had a lot of senior members, yet there were lots of holes with some big carries. You just knew these old boys were stuffed from the get go. I loved this course though, it was a about placement and reading the geography.
My current course isn’t long at 6043 yards it has 1 par 5 and 4 par 4s over 410 yards. One particular par 4 is 440 yards but you tee up 5 yards below the fairway ( if that makes sense) it’s a bit of a thump, and a bunker at 220-230 is a nuisance.
The course really is set up for your average good player with a driver carry of 230 yards … so it will catch them out. The long boys have no issues. Apart from heather and generally bad lies ..so distance can be small but the course can still be unpleasant.

  3. Couldn’t play today, so did go to the range with the garmin thingy to do a simulation round.
No warm up balls , just straight in to it after a few stretches and practice swings. Shooting straight onto the range gives it some perspective. Hit a few wayward shots that would have been bogeys, I am sure. So with that in mind, the -7 score is a little non representative, but it makes you hit different clubs and shots.

I didn’t play driver off every tee and opted to play 3 wood for position.

I then hit the remaining balls with my 8 iron. I definitely have an issue with pulling it, I normally hit a slight draw, but these were toe strike pulls. So I am face closed and getting away from in to out. I tried a few things but the strike didn’t migrate back to middle, and there was heel wear from the mat.

This is the issue with practice, I just get left with more questions 🤔

  4. I play either a combo of mp20 7-PW (5,6 are hmb) or PXG 0211dc.

    Two very different sets ..

But I will say that the TP18s I have had for 30years and used during my golfing formative years are harder than the MP20s.
There is a vanity thing about blades, and when I went to buy my clubs, I tried everything. I was surprised I could live with the MP20s, the Mmc was nice but just too powerful, hmb are just distance machines … which is how I see 5 and 6 irons.

The PXG set was bought to replace my away clubs, these are ultra forgiving, hot ( even with 2 degrees more loft) but I think you can get flyers .. they are great if your in bad swing rut..

My next set will possibly be a cavity back… I went from the TP18s to Zing2 ( beautiful to ugly) but dropped my HC from 12 to 3 in a month (partially due to iron but putting practice everyday for 20 mins for 2 weeks… did most of it)..so for me scoring is key

  5. Yesterday despite the rain, I just practiced golf. Playing and scoring… when I hit a rotter, I practiced being positive and focused on all the good stuff.

So 2 over for 9 holes, 50% GIRs, 2/3 sand saves, 16/18 putts. Playing just a 3wood off the tee, did make some holes longer than need be.
Still going to maintain this approach, practice swing feet closed feel the path, then widen same feel … line up and strike.

I love the range, it’s a de stresser .. but I will carry on through blisters and pain which isn’t really good for me. So I need to be more careful.

  6. Got 10 holes yesterday, was 1.5 club wind. No driver just the 3 wood.
Took the lesson from the previous round, just swing committed … no missed fairways. I think we could be repairing my relationship with the driver soon!

I am also remembering that when I was good the driver didn’t come out the bag regularly, I would play a strong 3 wood at most. I think it comes into play on the 420-450 yard up hill par 4s that are into wind. Otherwise it’s 3 wood all day long.

But seriously I would recommend you look at this set up, it feels quite substantial and the head weight doesn’t dominate.
I don’t have my numbers as such but I think I am in the 95-100mph region and can give some direction.

  7. I know I say it’s dreadful scoring but this video from Sidekick is actually what we contend with

hitting greens and rolling off, hard pan , no grass lies , bunkers with no sand or poor distribution…

I have played on most continents and to be fair the greens hold the ball and the grass on the fairway perches the ball up … U.K. we are collecting the ball early and flop shots are only when no choice is given …

  8. I got out last night, no driver but the OP 3 wood set up.

UST gold  55 in seniors isn’t too whippy, doesn’t feel like a lump of lead on a cane.
I wasn’t mega confident to start off, but I managed to get it out and down the middle. The swing was a little out to in, so I was moving it left to right. My trajectory was a bit low as well, but I was closing the face to get the shape to a minimum.

When I got out of my jumper, this is an odd thing to state, but stay with me! I could get my swing more neutral to out-in. I then started to get the ball position a little closer to middle and the height came.
I like this, if I just swing hard and committed this goes pretty far … plus it has the 3 wood benefit of being persuaded to move right or left .. which is definitely a quick fix if I am swinging like a donkey.

I haven’t given up on the driver, far from it, our conditions just don’t warrant me carrying it around. I estimate it gives me 10-20 yards more at best, and I only need those on possibly 2 holes..

scoring was okay, given my putter was awol for the first 7 holes.

I have also dropped the range time now, it’s just play

  9. I think I am a perpetual worrier… I was thinking I have no predictability.. so go and hit 2-300 balls, I straighten it up but then I am too tired for the course!
I do have a habit of getting wide in my stance, which then gives me a random delivery. I need to remember this ! But I have decided to hit less ball, play more holes.

@Ding-dong ball choice seems highly personal.  I am on the quest to find the perfect ball myself - low spin with good greenside performance.   The AVX works pretty well and I have been using Vice Pro Soft but it still launches high and skinny sometimes.  I want to try the Q Star Tour, Titleist Tour Feel, and Bridgestone Tour B RX.

AVX was good on everything except the driver for me, might be worth a revisit. I wasn’t so sure about green side spin, I think it was low but that was consistent. I find Pro V1 and 1x a little too choosy about when they want to spin .. I hate indecision 🤭
Vice pro soft was good but a bit soft feeling, try the std one see how you get on, unfortunately you have to buy huge batches, so being fickle I have opted out.
Titleist tour feel /speed and soft , pretty much mimic the premium range behaviours I think. I have not really overly tested speed, but I thought it was pretty reasonable. Tour soft, I like it’s a little softer than q star but lacks the spin skin and green side behaviour but okay on wet greens .
Bridgestone are on my list to revisit as well so be interesting to see …

I think the spin rates are relatively close it’s more about the launch and compression.. I actually like Srixon compression . Bridgestone has me mystified to be honest as does Titleist so it’s a bit of grope in the dark.

  11. Had a week away so no practice of note, just 40 ball before my competition round. 2 main things, rear arm rotation and connecting rear elbow to body.
Sounds silly, but I have got a bit flappy, which explains my driver randomness.
I started with a topped 3 wood off the first, but from then on out driving was straight.. no massive path deviations and intended shape was good. I will say this and correct me if you think this is the wrong conclusion. I need to get my ball position more accurate as I get pushes off the target … the ball goes straight right by 20 yards at worse over 250 -280 yards.. so I think I am hitting with the face open and could have a more forward position?

Unfortunately my iron play was a bit ropey, and my putter was a little cold, meaning some scrambling was required but the putter failed to seal the deal. But with all these small refinements you get over thinking on it, and once it’s natural it all falls into place.

For me when the driver is delivering the scoring is better, so hopefully I can get back on track.

Just a quick question to you all, have you started to look at the most suitable golf ball ? I use Srixon Q star, Q star tour, prov1x … and I think the q star may be the ball because the green side spin numbers from measurements seems really close to pro v1x ( which is strange) but also driving it feels like a cruise missile especially in the wind

I did have a super 50-55 yard chip though with a 60 degree wedge, the ball just landed went a foot forward and then came back 2-3 inches … we talk about driving but to be honest this stuff really gets me excited!

  12. Bit of a mixed bag for me … range is pretty reasonable, on course and I am random .. definitely me, not the shaft set up!
I dropped my 5 wood and put the Ping G425 max in std 14.5 loft with the A flex shaft in. Suffice to say this works despite my uselessness. I was hitting it 250 yards with about 6ft of peak apex 🙄 and when I eventually got it right it was a little further. Dispersion was good and I was in play when ever I used it ( perhaps I should have used it more!)

I am still committed and despite my off tee woes I am still seeing handicap cuts .. but I have practiced my short game, and fiddled my scrambling stats to decent .. but I think I may have diagnosed my self with a flying trail elbow … but no range time this week due to a business trip and if I slip off on Saturday evening for a quick 20 balls I am pretty sure the current wife  ( I won’t bother with another if the opportunity arose) will divorce me, so it’s a case of fudging it the next Sunday competition!

  13. Got out tonight with the short OP. Well it’s not so short really and my yardages were rather good, excess of 280yards .. control is there, no need to increase loft currently, so still set at 8 degrees and neutral .. it’s open though.
I also tried out a Snell Prime X , which feels soft off the club face, no noticeable yardage difference to the Q star tour from what I can tell. But 2 negative points , it’s affected by the wind and it’s not so durable ( you won’t be playing this for 18 holes without some discolouration). The wind was strong tonight and I will just accept the conditions may have been more to blame than the ball. I do like the ball it feels nice on all types of shots… does it spin, who knows our greens are concrete and it’s a waste of money buying premium balls from the Pro.

Anyone tried this with the new BRNR mini yet?  I just picked up the 11.5 head.  Thinking the A flex pro launch blue at 44".  Just not sure how much weight to take out of the head.

It’s a great looking club, however in my opinion OP works because you get launch and a bit of extra spin which allows you to drop loft … the loft drop delivers their ball speed as well.
So if you go this route, can you drop the flex significantly without getting a balloon flight. Perhaps you can with the MP shaft but it’s a costly experiment.
Maybe look at the specs and try a reduction in shaft length and get a feel on launch and spin.

But it’s a bit of eye candy for sure and the head cover is the best out there !

  15. My bag contents are pretty fixed for this season.

The driver may be dropped when the fairways dry out and the 3 wood slipped in, but I would drop the 5 wood as well.

    But set up is :

Driver, ottophlex epic speed set to 8 degrees

5 wood Callaway rogue 60 g tour ad di stiff ( eBay punt that was a rejected order so was brand new )

    7 wood PXG 0341 ..

    3&4 Ping crossovers

6-wedge , PXG 0211DC +2 degrees loft ( I forgot to shorten them - so they are still long distance)

    50,56 Ping glide wedges

    60 degree vokey

Then a putter .. the greens currently are really slow but that should change with the weather we are predicted to get.

  16. Just purchased GPLB at 44,5” lady 45 … frivolous spend I know but I wanted to try shorter with out risk.

Also purchased the senior flex UST 55 with a ping adapter for the g425 max 3 wood … looked about right, weight is reduced and the tip should cope with the heavy head..

Game is still on the up, need to work on the concentration and confidence levels. I can do 8-9 holes under par .. I just need to extend that to 18 … tough ask for a man who can loose the plot when he hears certain phrases like “bleed nipples, deep in the bush” etc

I think I've pretty clearly confessed my eternal loyalty to the PLB.

That said, if anybody is still on the fence about trying the Otto Phlex project, and still have a hard time stomaching the whopping $59.99 + tax,  S&H.. or just need something a little heavier, or just don't jive with the color scheme/graphics of the PLB 45g.. here's another option that really looks like it could be a strong candidate. In fact, curiosity might just get the best of this old cat and I might order one just to try out.

It's listed onder the "Deals" section. What's got me intrigued is the lower torque of 4.0. 🤔 which is still up for debate as to whether or not it makes a difference.. but for $40 it sure looks tempting.

I have this in stiff prior to my autoflex experiment. It’s light and tip stiff in my opinion, felt boardy but light and my swing speed was up a few mph and was stable not too high either. Definitely one to try on a heavy head … I was looking at it as well if PLB wasn’t delivering…

Would be interesting to see, I think getting in senior or lady spec wasn’t possible here though.

  18. Got out tonight. Thought I would wonder around 9 holes and have a little practice, but ended up playing a pairs bounce match which was rather competitive.
Driving is improving, although my 250-260 yards were looking a bit short compared to the 320 yard monsters one of the guys was hitting… thought I had a bit of a fight on .. but I ground them all down with boring, fairways in regulation or greens in regulation and we won 3 and 2 but I finished my 9 at -1.
So Otto Phlex is still working and has the most consistency.
I also was carrying a very reduced bag of Driver, 4 iron 7 to wedge, 50 and 60 degrees plus putter … no fairway woods or driving iron ( shows too many clubs are in the bag)

  19. Competition season has now started here. My driving has gone a bit off, but I have started to recover it. But to be fair, despite not hitting the distances previously seen, it was still good enough to break 80, and take the win.
When you break it all down the weaknesses was not the driving, but in the short game. Our greens are dreadful currently due to the weather and possibly some mismanagement… and stats suggest I coped with them better than most, so my putter is fine.

I dropped shots on some short par 3s due to distance management… wrong club 🙄 ..

I am happy with the set up, and I think mediocrity is still good enough to score well .. this set up is giving me that leeway. I did wonder about going up from 8 degrees to 9 on loft which would close the head down .. but my issues aren’t really related to that so I will just keep working on the technique and tempo.

I have also picked up a regular flex Ping crossover g425 4 iron , which is becoming one of my favourites.. I may look to experiment with a 2 iron with a light shaft in, that could be quite an interesting experiment!

Interesting. Here in the States, the AD333 is called the Q-Star. It's an ionomer cover, as compared to the Q-Star Tour's urethane cover. I'd be interested to see what your data looks like on a launch monitor. I have a hunch the AD333 actually spins less than the other Srixons, but the higher launch and peak height should give it a steeper descent angle, which helps with stopping power. (The being said, the QST is definitely going to be lower spinning compared to the Z-Star series, of which you'll likely see max greenside spin with the standard Z-Star)

I had selected the Tour on those grounds, so was mightily disappointed when it was rolling on.. I gave it a number of opportunities and last night my striking was at its best, which may not be up to much but it could get the XV coming backwards and AD333 hop stopping , on 3/4 irons and full.
But for me these are indicative and I want to know if I get any check on chips, I want that to be a consistent response … I can live with less spin but why buy a ball that doesn’t do what you want , and that’s why the QST really surprised me, as all the claims were all the right things.
Anyway it’s back to the drawing board, with the XV the current leader, I will look at the Callaway options (although they don’t seem to be like the old HX Tour i stuff ) , Pro Vx is good but expensive
