  1. For a heat source I use a heat gun. Not sure if a hair dryer would get hot enough, it may but it would take longer. I just weighed the stuff I have. 34" of if weighs 16 grams. So just under 1/2 gram per inch. Since the weight is distributed evenly over the entire shaft I really can't tell the difference. I also have not noticed any "dampening" effect on feedback. If I hit it on the toe or heel I can still tell. You can get 8' for $7 shipped. That's easily enough to do 2 putters. Pretty cheap experiment if you want a black shaft and if you don't like it you can just cut it off.
  2. Personally I can't tell any difference in feel. YMMV but the shaft in a putter isn't doing a lot and the weight isn't noticeable to me.
  3. Ha ha...it pays to scroll down some times Thanks for catching that!
  4. http://www.ebay.com/itm/16-0mm-5-8-Polyolefin-Heat-Shrink-Tubing-Tube-Sleeve-Wrap-BEST-DEAL-US-SHIP-/221353520127?var=&hash=item3389b2abff:m:ml42eCDEO0UlTj93clC_7Vg That's the stuff I bought. Doesn't say if 2:1 or 3:1. I would think either would be fine though, it's just how much it shrinks down and either one will shrink small enough to be tight around the hosel.
  5. 5/8" or 16mm is correct. That's the size you want. Also should note make sure to look at the pictures when ordering. Some of this stuff comes with stamped lettering on the outside and I'm guessing nobody wants that on their putters
  6. Might add a couple grams of weight, but the tubing itself would work. I have a buddy that owns a paint shop and he's painted a few different iron shafts which has also worked very well. A knick in the paint wouldn't be a huge deal, but I would think a knick in the tubing would eventually keep spreading and peal off.
  7. Depends on the grip, but it's basically just a few layers of tape. Nothing different than building up the grip a few wraps. Superstroke was tight, but I got it on with a little elbow grease edit: You could also just cut the tubing right at the end of the grip so just the very end is tucked under the grip.
  8. I have to give the obligatory answer first...there is no such thing as side spin. It's just spin on an axis. But yes, the proper shaft can absolutely cut down on spin. Also finding the proper length, weight, kick point, torque etc could allow you to deliver the head to the ball in a manner that would produce less curvature of the ball. Nothing is going to overrule The Ball Flight Rules of Golf but the right shaft could make it easier to hit it straighter.
  9. I can't even count how many times I've seen posts on various forum's asking where to buy black putter shafts. Happens all the time, and while swapping a putter shaft is pretty easy, this is a whole lot easier. All you need is polyolefin heat shrink tubing. Just take off the grip, slide it down over the shaft, and then apply heat. Today I decided I wanted a black shaft on my Evnroll ER5 putter. Here's the before picture. I already wanted to change the grip so I just cut it off with a utility knife and cleaned up the grip tape. Then just slide the tubing over the butt end all the way down to the head. Make sure to get it all the way down because it will shrink a little bit when you heat it up. A quick tip is to just heat the very end next to the head, maybe the bottom 2". Then you can still push it down again so you don't see any shaft next to the head. Here's the shaft all shrunk down before the grip goes on. I blow my grips on with air so after that step I just put on one layer of blue painters tape and then blew on the Superstroke for the finished product. All done! Quick and easy matte black putter shaft. Took me about 5-10 minutes total time. The best part is that this stuff comes in a ton of different colors so it's easy to create a very unique putter. I should also mention this stuff is dirt cheap. You can easily find 15' for under $10 shipped on ebay. That's enough to do 4-5 putters depending on what length you play. If you're interested just search 5/8" Polyolefin Heat Shrink Tubing on ebay and find something that looks good. Have fun!
  10. And I'll take the head that fits me paired with the shaft that fits me twice on Sunday.
  11. Oh yeah, absolutely. I'm just saying it's a 50/50 shot that they had the right head in the first place. Just goes back to how important fitting is.
  12. It's really about finding the best fit for each component. It's not all shaft, it's not all head and they are both equally important. I don't care what shaft you put in it, I'm going to spin the crap out of a driver that has a high back COG like a Ping G series. It just doesn't work with my swing. Could the right shaft mitigate some of that? Sure, but it's still the wrong head for me and will never give me the results I'm looking for.
  13. I really think we need to throw out the term premium. It's a shaft. Just like any other good there are a range of prices and performance characteristics available. What matters is not if the shaft is stock, premium, aftermarket, made-for, exotic, cheap, expensive etc. What matters is does the shaft fit YOUR swing? We need to start talking in terms of a fitted shaft vs a non-fitted shaft. So out of however many hundreds of different shafts there are on the market, does the one in your driver fit you? If it does then you aren't going to see any gains by going to a different shaft. If it doesn't then there is a good chance you leaving both distance and accuracy on the table. The answer is not to buy a premium shaft, the answer is to go get fit from a competent fitter.

  17. I'd be curious what they say. I honestly don't know how that works.
  18. I don't want to turn this into a SLDR-C debate thread, we already have several of those. I'll also say that I'm a firm believer in play what makes you happy. If you choose to play a non-conforming club and it makes you happy then go for it! That said, regardless of whether the club would pass the conforming test, the fact that it hasn't been tested and isn't on the list deems it a non-conforming club. Therefore you are not allowed to use it in USGA events and any rounds played with it would not count towards an official handicap. Again, your welcome to play it and I know you are quite happy with it. Just be aware if it ever does get called in to question during an event you'll have to deal with the penalty.
