Golf is expensive cus you cannot just play anywhere with anything (I understand technically you can, but lets just keep the concept of an actual golf course in mind. Even the cheapest backwoods courses have some grass and an attempt at a green). Courses cost lots and lots of money to upkeep. I have seen lots of responses talking about the relativity of expenses to each person. You can get used clubs for a couple hundred dollars. Bags of shag balls at walmart. Play off hours. Well lets talk another relativity. It costs $10 for a cheap soccer ball. All you need after that are some friends and an open area. Disc golf cost $5 for a used disc and then you can find numerous free courses at parks. Stop trying to kid yourselves, and/or take a step back and look at the picture from a different perspective.

Without being gifted anything, you literally cannot start playing golf for much less than $100. $50 for some rough used clubs, $10 for a bag of balls, $20 for a rough used bag (I guess you could carry all your clubs if you needed to), $20 for greens fees. If your passion for the game is that deep that you would continue to play for a longho time in those conditions, i applaud you. Odds are if you really enjoy it isnt long before you are paying $50 a round to play a decent course, which if you play 35 times a year that is $1500. Upgraded to better clubs at a budget friendly $300-$400. Before you know it your spending $1000s a year. And that is without even considering the random frivolous purchases in golf like the astronomical price of golf attire.

Now back to my other relative examples. If you love soccer you upgrade to a better ball for $50 , pay $100-200 for nice cleats every couple years, and $100-$200 or so a year for league dues. Youre in at around $400 a year for the same level of commitment as my golf example.

Disc golf you upgrade to about $50 worth of decent clubs and continue to play for free.  It costs next to nothing.

Golf is expensive. No matter your income level or your amount of available spending money.

years ago I got in this discussion with a friend of mine who made the comment it must be nice to belong to a golf course, then my dues were around 950.00 per year. I asked him how much a winter he spent on skiing, trip passes, lodging etc. That killed that discussion. Moral of the story if it is your passion and out in life and you can afford it, do it!

I can definitely bet that many of us would have once thought - "Why is golf so expensive"? What do you think - Yes or No? What could be the reason behind this?

Let's put this in perspective, look at the percentage of cost fetilizer, seed, elec for pumps, possibly water, cost of maintenance parts, equipment etc have gone up since this covid crap. Also add on all of the States that have passed these minimum wage laws etc. Who in the end pays, the consumer. Yes, golf has gone up in costs quite a bit but for legit reasons. Folks complain about these costs going up but still are dropping 600.00+ on a new driver. Logic is not to be found.

I’ve bought used balls and have so far had a good experience. Especially when I purchase balls listed as in “mint” condition. I’ve purchased premium make golf balls at up to $20 dollars less than what these are listed for in the commercial market. I agree that Vice and others make excellent golf balls, but so far I give a thumbs up to purchasing off the used market.

copuldn't agree more and they seem to go in the woods just as good

Curious what are the feelings about buying “used” golf balls from someplace like Used Golf Balls website.  My understanding is these are NOT refurbished balls ( a NO-NO) but I am thinking that maybe they are balls used on the range at professional or higher end amateur events or something similar.  Any input is appreciated.

I have bought from GolfBallPlanet.com and have had no issues what so ever. The ratings they give the quality of the balls has been dead on.

you get a wedge with around a 10 deg or so bounce, lay it open to get more bounce. It's a versatile club, only as good as it's operator.

you just have to look at that wedge as an extension of your imagination and practice it

I’ve been seeing this ad pop up on Facebook for several weeks now featuring Blair O’Neill. The pyramid putter claims to have created a gear effect on the face of the putter to correct toe and heel strikes and direct them back towards the hole.

I think MyGolfSpy needs to do some independent testing on this claim.

I know this topic is a couple years old but a friend of mine bought the mallet about a month ago. I saw his putting improve quite a bit so I tried it. I t felt like inside 10ft you almost couldn't miss. The line stayed great, good roll only thing I noticed was adjusting to the distance control over my Scotty blade. For the money, 169.00 right now, it's worth the try.

I plan to reshaft my irons with graphite, I’ve never had anything but steel but my joints just can’t take it anymore. I have TT XP95 S300 shafts now (fitted in 2018), so I assume a graphite shaft of about the same weight would be a good starting point if not a good substitute, though regular flex as I’m not getting younger or faster. After a bad $450+ experience with a driver fitting and a totally ridiculous quote for new JPX921F’s with MMT shafts from CC - I’m not going there again anytime soon. I’m leaning toward just going to GG and seeing what the latest Mizuno Shaft Optimizer 3D recommends, guessing it will be the UST and Aerotech shafts below, but that won’t permit me to try MMT’s. The ones I’m looking at are all similar weights, regular flex and mid launch.
    I’m doing this to:

    1. reduce impact in my joints first and foremost,
    2. I certainly don’t want dispersion to increase (at least as good),
    3. but I don’t care at all about extra distance.
    • UST Mamiya Recoil 95 Graphite Regular (95g) @$45ea

    • Mitsubishi MMT Iron 80 Regular (84g) @$60ea
    • Aerotech Steelfiber i95 Graphite Regular (95g) @$51ea

Any insights into the differences between the three? Again, I realize many will suggest a full blown fitter, but that’s an expensive crapshoot IME unless your swing is reasonably repeatable AND you’ve already narrowed the contenders substantially.

I went with the Recoil Dart, both shafts worked pretty good but I found I could work the ball a little better with the Recoil

I live in Florida as well so I hear ya. That’s when when I was originally fitted my fitter suggested going mid road 10 deg bounce on everything (Callaway standard S grind). Once I refined my short game technique I was able to dial in more on what I desired from bounce and grind and now I’m into Mizunos.

like RevKev described I’m overall a 16 Hdcp but my short game according to Arccos playing more around 7-8….I struggle out of the tee box

Just depends on how I feel when I get up in the morning.  I am a FJ guy and the only brand I will wear.  This is based on over thirty five years of experience with great performance, fit, wear and customer service.  Still have a good collection of MyJoy DryJoy tours, MyJoy Icon, which are spiked shoes.  The new Premiere and Tradition shoes I have in my rotation are spiked are some of the best FJ has made in years.  Do play a lot of rounds in my many Pro/SLs.  Waiting on the new Fields in white/red to be released which are spikeless. Find all these styles grip well in all kinds of weather.  I have two pair of the Flex XP and five pair of the Flex but do not wear them to play golf in.  Some golfers do, but I wear them to work in, for casual wear and on the range.   They do have enough grip to play in on a dry sunny day, unless you are trying to swing out of your shoes.  😃

I was a FJ guy to until I got a pair from Bunkerless Golf, like wearing slippers

I have this issue - I use two extra wraps, do you find that midsize really helps the arthritis pain?

I find it does, my ideal grip is a standard size CP2 Pro with one extra wrap on the lower hand, seems to be a pretty good balance for me

Try the seed SD X1. The best ball I've played and a fraction the price of its top competitors.

If you get the on subscription its even cheaper.

I've played them all year and wont be going back.

I have yet to have one of these "other brand" balls feel like a ProV1. Vice, Kirkland, Snell etc just have a feel that I don't care for

    I have a bit of a dilemma.
I’ve been buying last years Bridgestone Tour B XS for the last few months at £28 a dozen but the place I buy them from has run out of last years model.
I can’t stomach paying £40 a dozen when I’m still so erratic with driver in hand. But I do hit it a reasonable distance. I carry around 260 at the moment and I’d say roughly 60% find fairways and the other can be as far as two fairways away.
It would be easy to go with a straighter flying distance 2 piece distance ball but the issue I have is that my iron play is strong. So a urethane cover with approach shots has been almost game changing for me at times.
Which ball do I go for next? I don’t want to pay more than £30 a dozen as I can still lose half a dozen a round if I’m on a real bad one.
I was considering the Kirkland but worry some reviews state it spins too much which will make driver worse. I also played with the e12 contact for a while but I lost some distance swinging 100+ mph.
Srixon AD333 is also tempting as it seems to spin well for a 2 piece ball.

Any recommendations are welcome as I’m running out of my Bridgestones.

    Thanks in advance

YOU CAN GO ON GOLFBALLPLANET.COM AND BUY USED ONES, pick the grade you want and tell them you want the older version Bridgestone, I like those also

Funny you should post this.  I have been doing the same thing; to the point that I commented to my wife that I was just batting the ball around the course.  Two days ago, I started taking my backswing to just left arm parallel with a 90º angle on the club and then rotating a fast as I can to a finish.  The result is much more solid strikes.  I do 4-5 of those swings, then 9-10 regular swings; rinse and repeat.

I'm getting much more wrist hinge, but along with that are sore wrists!!  I hope that if I keep doing it, the soreness will subside as my wrists get stronger.  I have never been called a "wristy" player; Stricker uses more wrists than I do.  Hopefully, that will change a little with this drill.

try doing the same thing you are doing but with an early wrist pre-set like Faldo

A lot of good suggestions so far.  Ball manufacturers do make mid-premium balls with urethane covers.  Taylormade Makes the Tour Response ball with a urethane cover, Srixon their Q*Star Tour ball has a urethane cover.  Best thing to do is buy a sleeve of as you mentioned and try them out.

Two balls I will throw back in the woods, TM Response and anything Srixon, not a thing about them I like

some of my clubs I put just 1 extra wrap under the lower hand becuase that is the one I lose grip with. I do notice I have no where near the pain when I am done or when swinging the club. Another consdieration is graphite shafts in your irons to help absorb the impact shock

Not supposed to.  People go to a golf school to identify what their issues are and what changes they need to make.  Changes don't happen overnight.  Depending on the player's ability when they go, it could take weeks or months to make the change and that's assuming that they put the time in on their drills and got periodic feedback from their instructor to see if they were on the right track.  People think that they should be able to play better immediately, when in actuality they will play worse until the new movements become their new normal.  How many times have we heard Tiger say when he was going through his many swing changes... "it's a process".

He is a really analitcal guy and became a walking head case trying to absorb it all and make it work

I’ve gone skinnier with my last set of grips: I find it easier to close the face than with midsize grips. Hard to say how much influence the grips vs swing changes have had, but my anecdotal evidence is that I fade less with skinnier grips.

and what you stated is the plus. Thicker grips "minimize" hand action

A place I got some of my clubs fitted at offered to regroup my irons for free if I order the grips myself. Despite my best effort, I messed up ordering replacements. I somehow manage to order mid size grips. Now the regular grips are on back order. I looked at the recommended measurements and my hands fit the mid size, but I am still skeptical of something new. What are the pros and cons of a midsize grip?

I wear a medium cadet size glove, I like oversize grips because I have arthritis in my hands and can hold onto the club better but even before I always liked 1 extra wrap on the lower hand.

I have no idea what your saying. But it’s cool.

My though on DJ getting the straight path is because belly button is facing the target before his club is anywhere near the ball.

That 4D model of him today at the PGA was nuts. If I tried to turn that fast, far, and powerful I’d be in a wheel chair.

Has to be a super hero, that’s the only way to explain it.

I watched the Mark Crossfield video and didn't learn a thing. Then I watched a second one where he was taking a lesson from Mark Bull, and it that video I learned what Mark Bull was having Crossfield doing, And that was when I learned HOW Crossfield had changed his swing and how he had increased his swing speed.  The second video was well worth the time and I will be watching more of Mr. Bulls videos in the future to see what I can learn from him and with any luck I can use his instruction and add a few more MPH's to my swing speed soon. I would love to get my 105-108 MPH up to over 110 on a steady basis and enjoy the added distance off the tee. I've been up over 120 a few times but it was only a FEW times so learning how to do it on command would be great way to kick off a new golf season this spring.

swinging hard=less clubhead speed, swinging fast and insync =increased clubhead speed
