Tech puts my 4 iron back in the bag

My irons are Titleist 816 ap2's.

They have tungsten inserts, and other goodies that my old clubs didn't have.

About a year or 2 ago I decided to hit a hybrid instead of my 4 iron, and it seemed more consistent..

So when I got my ap2's, I just automatically took out the 4 iron.

So Friday on just a whim I switched them out and figured what the heck.

Anyways the 3rd hole was a par 5 that left me about 250 out, just out of reach with anything I can hit, so I decided what a great opportunity to try the 4 iron as a lay up. So I choked up just a hair for a touch more control and too a nice smooth swing and doggone if the iron didn't swat a beautiful shot down range.

It had some nice height and went about 197 yards which is perfect.

I hit it a few more times through the round and was really happy.

So, the difference with the newer clubs is that the tungsten weights and whatever else they've done make the 4 iron much easier to play which I suppose most of the newer clubs do.

Duh

Still, I think even with tech, the 4 iron vs the hybrid is still a viable discussion going on . But for me today, the more forgiving iron has won its spot back into my bag

Love my 4 iron.  Probably have hit as many, if not more, "golf shots" with that club than any other.  Wish I could hit great shots with the short irons as much.

Not to say that there are no bad shots, quite a lot, but the flushed, long, great trajectory shots seem to be more common with the 4.

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

I love my 4 iron. It is my go-to get out of trouble club. I have had 1 hybrid and won't have another for a long time. I rarely ever even hit my 5 iron because I would rather take some off the 4 than hit that cursed 5. I still play SGI's though. Even though I am a reliable ball striker, I would rather have high and straight over needing to work it every time. The only thing I miss about players clubs is the spin.

Sorry about the pointless digrsssion here.

I still play a 22* 4 iron. Obviously, I hit it best off of the tee, but I can still flush it off the deck most of the time.

I really can't stand my 18* hybrid. When pin point accuracy is called for, the hybrid is the last club I would reach for. This is part of the reason I haven't replaced my 4i with a hybrid. Plus, there is nothing better than tattooing a long iron!

With the G700 review, I was glad PING allowed us to include the 4 iron in the set. I had been playing a compact 4 hybrid (the Adams dHy), and wanted to see if the launch and forgiveness properties of the G700 would make using a 4 iron a legitimate option.

Spoiler: Yep. Lots of yep.
