Drills for getting the hands in front

Recommended Posts

The hands in front come from having everything in place at the top of the swing with good pressure shift and rotation.

You are trying to address a symptom and not the course. You have to figure out what’s causing you not not be able to get your hand in front and fix that.

A photo of the symptom provides no benefit. Post a swing from face on and dtl. Then we can look at what’s causing your hand to be lagging behind

Your hands aren’t that far behind but they are lagging a little. Your pressure shift to the left is a little late and you aren’t getting the arms down at the start of the swing along with not creating space for the hands.

Trying to physically get the hands ahead is so futile. It comes from a swing that is in sync. A good sound grip and setup. When you do position style golf look with bad mechanics or a bad swing motion. Get ready for a long road to stinkville

And not a pro. But you’re out of sync.Your hands and arms are outracing your body.Maybe look at your arm over run in your backswing to sync you up a little more

The drill I see most often is to place a ball about 4  - 6 inches in front of your normal ball position, then hit shots from that position.  In order to strike the ball that far forward, you need to emphasize rotation and getting your low point in front of the ball.  If you lag your hands behind or early release, you will thin it or miss it.   If you can hit the ball solidly from that far in front of your normal ball position, it will improve your impact position and strike when you move the ball back.   I hit 2 from the up-front position, then go back and hit one from my normal position.

Another drill you can use is to hit 1/2 or 3/4 punch shots and see how low you can flight the ball.   You have to keep the hands forward in order to flight the ball down.  Think hitting out from under low branches on a tree.   Practice hitting low, low punches with a 7-iron.    That feeling of keeping the hands ahead to flight the ball low can work over into your full shots.

The AMG videos for takeaway, backswing, downswing are great to use. They go over what to do and how to do it, with some drills.

Monte Scheinblum has some drills on Instagram.

One for proper shift which is part of the issue

and one for how to shallow

One for getting the hands in front that I can’t find right now. Take your backswing. Don’t do anything else and lower arms til hands are in front of trail thigh then turn and collect the ball

I found this helpful. It involves moving your right arm farther back and higher at the top with your left arm straight.  It shallows your swing as well.  It induces a natural delay in your swing at the top that creates optimal swing plane.  It seems counterintuitive but I can tell you it really works.  Went from a pronounced fade to a straight or slightly draw biased long iron

Hope it helps.

Hey thanks, I am still trying to figure all of this out but a lot of great content. Thanks for all of the help, AMG is has a ton of great stuff, and I’ve been following them for about the past year. I’ll definitely take a look at what everyone has suggested and start to really crank away at the drills. Thanks again for all the help, and look forward to interacting with you guys some more.
