Pupini
So, I was watching the Bryson and John Daley YouTube episode the other day and it got me thinking. In the video John Daley said that all golfers should get fitted for grips. I think he even said it was more important than getting fitted for clubs. Anyway, I figured I would throw it out to this group and see if anyone has been fitted for grips? It isn't something I've thought about doing but would like to hear if anyone has done it and did it help? Stereotype
Didn't know this was a thing either. He looked at mine in relation on my current gamers versus the ones that I was trying and felt that it was more on the personal preference spectrum and based on my numbers not performance related. I am getting new grips on the irons that I bought from the fitting and will talk to the club maker as well. Potential update #2 incoming later this week. Out of curiosity, are you going with a new grip or a new grip size. I've often wondered how an oversized grip would perform compared to standard. I've been thinking about getting an oversized grip just to test it out. I just saw your comment as I was scrolling through and thought I would share my thoughts on the oversized grip. I was playing with standard grips last year and years before and never gave it a second thought. However, as I started getting some aches and pains in my hands. I decided to give JumboMax a try on my driver and I can honestly say it has made a big difference in making my driver work for me. I then also went with midsize on my wedges and noticed how much better my grip feels. Long story short, my hands are pain free. That being said, i have gone to two fittings this year and all they had were standard sizes. The Vokey wedges with my preferred grip definitely felt better for me versus the standard grips on the test clubs, and not having the grip you prefer can affect your ball striking. I have yet to see a fitter offer different grip sizes at the demo/fitting days. I think one of them also said they "guarantee" most golfers would be considerably better with larger grips? Don't quote me on that, but it was something along those lines. I've been toying with the idea of adding a few extra layers of tape, or maybe going up to a midsize and keeping the one layer just to see what it's like? Shapotomous
Grip size fitting isnt new. A few decades ago (mid 70's) golf pride had a hand size / grip chart. There was a sort of hand outline on the placard that based on where your fingers reached came up with a recommended grip size. I changed thousands of grips while working at the course during HS and college and used that chart dozens and dozens of times. cnosil 1 Quote Modern Bag: G410 LST 10.5*, Hzrdus Smoke RDX 6.5 Flex; 915F 3w, Diamana S+ 70 S flex; Mavrik 18* 5w; JPX 919 HM Pro 4i; JPX 900 Forged 5 - PW, PX LZ 6.0; Edison 2.0 49*, 53*, 57* KBS Tour 120 S; Heppler Fetch; Ball - MTB-X; Bag - Jones MyGolfSpy Edition! Dan1993
Had a fitting done recently and asked about grip size. Fitter had me grip both Standard and Midsize with a normal grip, then checked the underside fingers for how they touch and overlap. Turns out my hand size and grip is right on the cusp (7.5in as reference for others), so i can play either. Planning on moving up to Midsize when I buy new clubs. I will pass along my learnings. OK. I got two rounds in over the holiday weekend and I wanted to share my experience with a larger grip on my driver. I had a standard Lamkin UTx Green grip and replaced it with an oversize Lamkin Crossline grip. I wanted to keep a similar texture and just change the size. First reaction: I really liked the feel of a larger grip. It was easier to lay the club in my fingers and I think my pressure was a little softer. Game play: During my first round I couldn't miss a shot. I think I hit the fairway on 5 out of 6 tee shots with the driver. The swing was smooth and it felt like I had very good control over the club head. The second round was not as successful. Granted, the fairways were much tighter and although I didn't miss by much, I was not in control of my tee shots as much. Overall, I think the larger grip on the driver will be good for me. I can't imagine doing it for my irons, but I might try in a wedge or two. More to come, but it's trending in the right direction. Pupini
So, I've had a few rounds with the jumbo grip on my driver.. Overall, I'll say that it has performed pretty well. Certainly no worse than having a standard grip. My drives have been very accurate and distance is equal. I can't say for sure that grip has improve my drives or if I've found something in my swing that works. I guess it will take a lot of play to determine a pattern. The jumbo grip will be on the driver until I have a few rounds where the tee game failed me.
