    The Testing Opportunity

Maxfli has provided a few different testing opportunities for the MyGolfSpy Forum in the past but the release of the Maxfli Tour, Tour S and Tour X made us excited to bring this opportunity to the Forum.

Maxfli has a good following on the MyGolfSpy Forum and their golf balls are used by many members. More than 1,300 Forum members registered to have a chance to test these golf balls! Each of the five testers chosen received two dozen Maxfli golf balls of their choice.

We had two testers for the Maxlfi Tour, one for the Maxfli Tour S and two for the Maxfli Tour Xl. Offering great value and traditionally doing well in our Ball Lab testing, expectations for these golf balls were high.

*Another important note as this golf ball is aimed at Tour use and Tour levels, it was requested that we find lower-handicap golfers to test these golf balls.

What the testers said - Maxfli Tour

    Screenshot 2023-10-30 7.32.41 AM.png

The Maxfli Tour is the middle of the road in the lineup. It’s firmer than the Tour S but softer than the four-piece Tour X.

Tester David Leighton Reid (8 handicap) and Tester CSiders12 (3.8 handicap) were selected to test and review the Maxlfi Tour. They had good first impressions but the alignment aid wasn’t exactly to CSiders12 preference.

“ The ball fresh out of the box looks like a nice, premium golf ball. The cover feels soft and the dimples look really nice. My only wish for these balls would be a better alignment aid on the golf ball. “

When it was time to hit the course, David Leighton Reid put the Maxfli Tour through its paces and found it comparable to both his gamer Titleist Pro V1 and Callaway Chrome Soft.

“ Off the tee, the Tour ball performed admirably with driver, fairway woods, hybrid, or irons.  Working the ball left and right is possible, and I can hit the dreaded duck-hook the same way as other premium balls.  The center of gravity line for better performance was not proven by me.  I found very little difference in performance of balls struck aligned toward the target or not aligned.

The mid-spin characteristics of the Tour ball hold greens quite nicely on approach shots and do not balloon up causing a lack of distance.  It is easy to hit accurate knock-down shots with this ball.

I conducted several chipping, pitching, and putting tests, comparing the Tour ball to the Pro V1 and Chrome Soft.  In every test, the Maxfli Tour performed as well as the other premium golf balls.  I always mark my gamer golf balls with a black alignment line and did the same for the Maxfli Tour.  Distance control was the same as the Pro V1 and Chrome Soft.

In an on-line review by Chris Wallace for Golf Monthly, Chris noted a lack of distance for the Tour ball with driver and irons.  I did not notice a loss of distance while playing the Tour ball.  This could be explained by the Tour ball being a good fit for my swing speed and game.“

CSiders12 made some valid points about the cost benefit versus performance of the Maxfli Tour.

“Price and overall performance are two key takeaways from this ball. The fact that this ball holds up against the biggest brands for considerably cheaper is impressive. The overall performance was good and the price is exactly where it should be. Personally, the takeaways are the alignment aid, the glossy finish, and the durability out of bunkers. Those three factors caused me to take three points away. However, I would say that I am willing to meet this ball in the middle because of the price point. I may get better durability out of a Pro V1, however, if the Pro V1 is only lasting me a couple of extra holes but they cost $20 more, I'm not sure if the Pro V1 is the top choice. “

With testing wrapped up, they graded the Maxfli Tour 88 and 97 out of 100 respectively.

What Testers said - Maxfli Tour S

    Screenshot 2023-10-30 7.32.27 AM.png

Tester thechrisgibbs (4.6 handicap) went deep into the numbers and data for his review, testing the Maxfli Tour S against several other premium “softer” golf balls.

Thechrisgibbs was really impressed with the durability of the Maxfli Tour S: “The ball is as durable as a Pro V1. For the first time in my golfing career, it has to be said that I don’t lose golf balls much anymore. I still have 20 of the 24 golf balls that Maxfli sent me. I used the same one on my SIM to push it through a durability test. It has to be said the ball was about the same level of marked-up as the Pro V1, EVEN WHEN I PUT IT UP AGAINST THE MOREGOLF MOD 1 WEDGE! For the price, I did NOT expect this much durability.”

He also had similar statements regarding the Maxfli Tour S performance on approach play. “ I couldn’t tell you if there was any difference between the balls. I played a few of the best rounds I’ve ever played with the Maxfli Tour S, but it’s also just been a breakout year for me. The consistency was exactly what I wanted from a premium ball though. “

As a higher-caliber player and someone who knows what performance he wants out of his golf ball, he said this when asked if he would make the Maxfli Tour S his new gamer or go back to his previous choice.

“Since Maxfli sent me 24 brand-new balls, I’ll be playing Maxfli Tour S for the rest of the year, God willing.

If you are at a pro shop on vacation, don’t have any balls with you, and need to buy something? I’m buying the Maxfli Tour S all day. I’m probably already renting clubs and spending too much, so I’m going with the ball I know performs at the price I want to pay.”

However, his final score was a modest 74 out of 100 as he recognized that this ball wasn’t quite suited to his swing speed and that others may see more benefits.

What Testers Said - Maxfli Tour X

    Screenshot 2023-10-30 7.32.12 AM.png

With the two softest golf balls in the Maxfli Tour lineup out of the way, it is time to see how the firmest of the series worked out for our testers, Micah T (2 handicap) and Cjeffs12 (4.1 handicap).

As someone who has used the previous Maxfli Tour X, Micah T shared some initial thoughts on Maxfli and the changes made to the 2023 version.

“I’ve always appreciated the frank nature of Maxfli’s claims: nothing too crazy there. Interesting to see Maxfli call out the CG balancing; definitely a premium feature there. The only huge change I see straightaway is the alignment aid:

I’m not sure how I feel about it yet: on the one hand, I loved using the alignment lines on the ‘21 model, on the other, the alignment aid kinda made it look like a range/practice ball.”

Cjeffs12  added some thoughts on the packaging and the CG alignment aid: “As for the specs on the box, they do a good job of detailing the differences of each ball in their lineup. I could easily pick up any of their boxes and decide which ball is best for my game. One thing I think they could do better for marketing or educating is the “CG Alignment Aid.” I would like them to show the consumer how to get the best out of this technology.”

Both testers got a lot of excellent comparisons versus other golf balls in the same category with various data points from different yardages and clubs.

Micah T noted that the Maxfli Tour X is a very low-spinning golf ball and not just off the tee.

“The low-spin characteristics of the ball off the driver are really impressive. The low spin characteristics of wedges? Maybe less so…”

Cjeffs12 added: “My numbers were really good with the XV, Tour X, and Pro V1x. The Srixon and the Maxfli just had another gear that the other balls did not have, my bad strikes were where the rest of the balls’ good shots were, and my good ones were carrying 10 yards more.”

They gave the Maxfli Tour X 96 and 83 points out of 100. Cjeffs12 knocked off the most points due to the cover being overly soft, causing him to relegate several balls to his practice bag because of scuff marks.

    The Bottom Line

    Screenshot 2023-10-30 7.32.02 AM.png

The major underlying theme of the 2023 Maxfli Tour series? Value and performance comparable to so-called premium balls.

Even though not every tester will be keeping these as their new gamers, they all appreciated a golf ball that performed close to high-end golf balls at a fraction of the price.

This was summed up perfectly by Micah T:

“This ball is a fantastic value! For 1/2 the price of a Pro V1x you get a ball 98.5% as good. Sound/feel, looks and workability are all top notch for me.”

I bought some of the Tour balls and found their performance to be really good and comparable with premium balls I use.  The only thing I have noticed is that when I am fortunate enough not to lose a ball after 2 or 3 rounds the balls lose their luster/gloss which makes me want to put them away even if they are still performing well.

I played the Tour X for most of this year, and have just this past month switched to the Tour, as I prefer the softer feeling and I don't seem to miss the extra spin of the X.   The durability is surprising - I'm okay with them losing "their luster/gloss", as long as they don't have any cuts or anything to affect ball flight - I played the same ball on Friday, and despite the record number of three-putts (I WISH I could blame the ball for that), it still flew perfectly off the driver on 18, so it's back in my bag ready for the next 18.

I bought a dozen of the Yellow Tour to try out this winter, less because of the color and more because I'm curious if there's ANY performance difference (extremely doubtful).  I also kind of like playing a yellow ball (shh, don't tell anyone).

Oh! One weird thing I've noticed is that with the double-line of the Tour X, a LOT of people think that's a driving range ball.  I had one guy pick it up and put it in his cart, claiming that he "thought it was just a range ball" (why would he take that? Good question), and I've had playing partners ignore it when they see it (in the VERY rare instance I hit it offline, ahem) in the rough, thinking it's a range ball.  Just a heads-up, in case you ever hit it in the rough 😉

Thank you testers for your time and your comments. What I was glad to hear was everyone gave them a good try and maybe just a little bit harsher BUT! It gives us the ability to see pros and cons on what you found. I've always been  a proponent of ball companies offering new releases in 2 pack sleeves as a promotion. Very few ever do it. I'm not one to just toss out 45 bucks to see if I might like it. Thanks to MGS and the tester program. This allows me a chance to read what people actually feel. The big spring issues of "hot" balls for the upcoming year are just paid ads as far as I can see.

Thank you all for your input.

I don't believe the 2023 versions have that double line any more. As much as I liked it to line up the ball on the tee and on the green, It was a bit much. The single line on the ball now is much better. Plus it's easier to add a colored line over it.

Oh, and I picked up 2 dozen Vero X1 and 7 dozen Tour's in yellow over the past 2 months. I'm making that switch myself to help with the visuals on the course, especially here in central TN where we have a lot of vegetation and trees and stuff since our courses are cut into the landscape.

One thing always bugs me when I read people's comments either in the Maxfli testing thread or just about anywhere the topic comes up. They say the ball is great and great value and great performance and they really like it, but won't play it because it's not "tour proven." Does that mean they only play one of like 6 balls on the market that are used on tour (including ones that are almost impossible to find)? To me, that has to be one of the most ridiculous things ever. A ball that's more than 95% the performance of a ProV1, as durable, and less than half the cost. But they won't play it because it's not used on tour. There are some crazy people out there.

You know what's crazy? I ordered the cube back in February - fully under the assumption that I was buying the "new" 2023 ball.  I'm not sure how or why I thought that - it's entirely possible that the new ball hadn't even come out yet (I'm fuzzy on the timeline), but I definitely have all 2021 balls, not the new 2023 ones.  Interesting.  I would have sworn I had the new ones 🙂

Thanks for the heads-up!  (They're still a great ball, obviously, but I'm loving the new Tour ball, for sure)

People want that name brand recognition unfortunately.  If it plays well and saves me money, I'm doin it!

... I have been writing reviews for many years now and very rarely do I run across any product that has no negatives, only positives. The Maxfli Tour is just such a product. Compared to a ProV1x I honesty find absolutely zero difference in performance. I could make the argument the durability of the ProV1x is better, but even then It is more the ProV retains its sheen better than the Maxfli, but performance isn't effected. To be fair I start every round with a new ball so I can't comment on playing the same ball multiple rounds. My young 37yr old playing pard is a +2 and after my recommendation he switched to the Maxfli Tour X from the ProV1 and he routinely gets 2 to 3 rounds from one of his Maxfli's.

... As a scratch player I have never paid any attention to what is played on the PGA tour and that would include the ball they use. Now if Titleist wants to provide me with free balls and pay me even a paltry $1,000 a year to play the ProV1x my only question is where do I sign? But since I have to actually pay for my balls and at $30 a dozen when buying the Maxfli Tour 4 dozen Cube, I can't imagine playing any other ball. Ymmv of course ...

I played the 2021 Maxfli Tour X balls for much of the last two+ years, but also occasionally played the Snell MTB-X, Wilson TRIAD, OnCore Vero X1, and even the ProV1x Left Dash when I could get them.

After the new Maxfli Tour models came out this year, I purchased a “sampler cube” (one dozen Tour, one dozen Tour S, and two dozen Tour X balls) at GolfGalaxy. I didn’t care for the Tour S at all, and still have 11 of those 12 balls sitting in my garage. The standard Tour model is quite good for me, and I will probably play them on my winter golf tour as the weather gets colder. However, the Tour X is definitely my favorite golf ball, and I play that ball model exclusively in all of my competitive rounds, including in my NJ Senior Men’s League Championship match last week (won our 3rd statewide championship in the last 5 years, and 6th in the 9 years that I have been playing in this league).

The 2023 Maxfli Tour X is absolutely my #1 favorite golf ball, and it I didn’t still have a bunch of the other golf balls mentioned above (plus a few dozen Vice Pro Plus balls, which are probably my next-favorite ball model), the Tour X and Tour balls from Maxfli would be the only balls that I ever play!

OMG! @Shrek74. 9 dozen balls??  Can anyone play that much golf? You are my hero.

... Haha I have 9 dozen too. I start every round with a new ball and lose one occasionally to a hazard or more likely, desert rocks that are on the fringes of fairways here in Phoenix. I imagine all things considered I average about 1.5 ball per round. That's only 72 rounds so I will need more balls by February or March at the latest. 🤪

Well, look up Fairfield Glade, TN and you'll notice 5 golf courses inside the community. That's where I live. 🙂

Plus, they just accumulated over the past 4-5 months. I got some. I was given some. Etc. I won't need to buy any for at least a year, maybe 2. I will lose anywhere from 2-4 per round these days and more on a really bad day (stupid, beautiful nature). Hopefully that stops next year as I work with a coach on my swing. 🙂

I used to be in Litchfield Park (just moved in June), so playing mostly year round 9 dozen doesn't last the way it used to. Especially in that more desert landscape. They can get cut up pretty easily going through the desert-scape. That doesn't include the occasional lost ball in the cactus no one wants to dig for. 🤣

... Tell me about it! I learned pretty quickly every bush in the desert has thorns and the tiny ones you don't even see might be the worst. Gotta be tough to survive the kind of temperatures Phoenix produces with little to no rain as well. So they all  protect themselves and I have learned unless my pard has a ball retriever, that ball stays in the bush!

I LOVE Fairfield Glade .... especially the Stonehenge and Druid Hills courses, although I haven't played there in a few years. My son has lived both in Knoxville and just east of Nashville (Percy Priest Lake), and my 16 year-old granddaughter lives in Murfreesboro, so I get down to Eastern and Central Tennessee quite often.

Ahhhh, I miss Fairfield Glade. Played most of the courses there when I lived closer and had a Wyndham time share there. It’s hard to pick a favorite. My son also went to TN Tech and I had to pass right by. So why not just stay there and drive up the road to see my son. Funny how things just happen to work out.

Average recreational bogey here .. been mostly using the regular Tour CG for a few seasons now, since first reading about it on MGS.

Have not done any in depth testing vs other golf balls, but I do like playing this one and it does seem to work for my game.

Recently took advantage of the MGS discount offer and in addition to more of the regular Tour also added 2 dozen each of the S and the X .. very much looking forward to doing some on course head to head comparisons to see if either of those might work even better for me!

The tour x is my absolute favorite ball and I personally loved the alignment aid of the 2021 version as it really helped me line up and see putts. I hate that so many thought it made the ball look like a range ball and Maxfli changed it to just the cg line.

... Hate is pretty strong for folks that don't like 'em so here is the thing to consider Coulter. You can add ligament lines if you like them 👍 but you can't take them away 👎. I don't like them at all and since the Maxfli's are COG balanced I do line the CG up in the general direction on the tee and on the greens but don't use them for alignment. I have found yellowing  out the line is a good way to mark my Maxfli's and it lessens the visual effect of the CG line.

Just to clarify I was only saying that I hated the fact that so many didn’t like the feature of the ball that I found very valuable. I understand I can add the lines myself but can’t help but believe any lines I might add to a ball will likely be less exact than if a ball factory did it for me. Not to mention the slight inconvenience.

I played the Tour and Tour X this year (thanks @GolfSpy SAM!) and have to say that I also saw zero performance differences compared to ProV1/V1x. I did pick up a dozen left dash V1x at a Golf Galaxy grand opening recently on an absolute steal of a price, and will say that I prefer the feel of that ball to the Tour X. However, I will not be shelling out $55 a dozen for those, so once they are gone, they are gone.

Shot my two lowest 9 hole rounds on back to back days WITH the same Tour X ball, so if that isn't enough to solidify how good they are, I'm not sure what is. Like @jdparker mentioned above, some just need to have that big name brand on the ball. I had a buddy say to me one round, "You're playing a Maxfli?" almost comically as if it didn't compare to whatever random Taylormade or Callaway ball he pulled out of his bag. Tossed him one and said, "hit your ball and then hit my ball and see which shot you want to play." The Tour X was a good 20 yards longer than the ball he was playing. He didn't mock me after that, continued playing that ball, then went and bought a dozen. Proof is in the pudding!
