To a point.  During my fitting I learned a few things.
I can use standard lengths Standard lies Things i never knew.  Then I got to hit multiple brands.  You can even see from my SS of my stock shaft I was consistent......ly right.  Is it for everyone?  hell no.  Anyone can play golf with off the shelf stuff. Hell.. I did for DECADES.  I wanted to play "better" golf.  I had the drive and the will to improve.  New clubs wouldn't totally fix that.  Did and have I still hit utterly abysmal shots with my fitted clubs?  LOL oh you bet.  Are my ok shots and my better shots better?  Oh absolutely. Ive got the arccos data to prove it... to a point.
Again its not an end all be all one size solution fits everyone recommendation.  Can it help you?  yes.  Its it guaranteed?  no.   for those it hits the desire, skill, whatever matrix... will it help... maybe..  hah.
This game is hard.  Stack the odds in your favor as much as you can.

    Hi,
I’ve been reading the site for quite a while now and thought it was about time I got properly involved.
I’ve been playing golf for around 30 years but had 7 years away from the game following a serious motorcycle collision that left me with restricted function of my left hand. I started playing again in 2020 once I could hold a club again and am now playing off 15.
I love the challenge of constantly improving most about golf.
I came across MGS while looking for a review on a Motocaddy trolley and love the reviews on new kit.
Originally I’m from the north east of England but have lived in London for the last 18 years. I’m currently a member at Sidcup golf club in south east London.
The best thing about golf in my region is that there are plenty of quality courses nearby. The worst thing is they’re usually busy.
I’ve been a police officer for 28 years so only 2 more to go until retirement and more golf 🤣
My username is my nickname from work for obvious reasons

Hense, further in the North you have 20-24hrs daylight.

Used to go practice onto the range at 11 pm 4-5 times a week and spend a good three hours there with video camcoder back, when I started golfing at the Arctic Circle.

Where I am now located there is playing worthy light conditions till close to midnight during midsummer for about two months. And sunrise at 4:10 am.

Our senior committee organizes a shot-gun start comp at summer solstice starting at 4 hundred hrs, The Early Bird Stableford. And up in the north you can play thru the ”night”.

At our home town there it was a common trade to start moving the lawn at 1 o’clock am. And do other gardening work, planting flowers and hedge in the early hours, cause you honestly don’t get tired, when the sun shines thru the night.

You guys are spot on with short seasons. Really is a bummer... But it makes the golfing season you do have that much better!

One if the questions a good fitter asks is how does that feel.

My buddy was being fit by the long rep who went to work for pxg and is working with the lpga tour for them.

He didn’t like the feel of a shaft and the fitter asked what he didn’t like. Based on his answer he grabbed another and said you will like this one better than because of the softer tip. Which he did but the results still weren’t what either liked. He grabbed another shaft and bingo they had a winner in feel and performance

It’s actually one of the biggest things in a fitting. It’s human nature to react to a feeling. You put a club on a robot and change different things and the robot will swing the same way. You put a club that feels off on a golfers hand and they will have a change in their swing. Literally has this happen in my own fitting for the 917 driver. Fitter noticed my swing change other a shaft despite it having the same way worth and stated flex as another shaft. Same happens when the look at address is off.

ive also seen it in fittings I’ve done and others I’ve watched and it’s also something fitters agree with so it’s not just me saying it. The purpose of a shaft is weight and feel.
some people are less sensitive than others. Some a couple swingweight points will cause them to alter their swing while for others it will have no impact.
There are all kinds of threads on other forums with fitters that actually discuss this.

Cast irons can be adjusted too.
The material of the shaft has nothing to do with if one can overpower a shaft. Weight and stiffness profile will determine this. Light graphite can be designed to play stiffer and firmer than steel.
Also incorrect about the score and who benefits from a fitting. Higher handicap benefit more than a lower handicap because they can adjust better to bad fitting equipment and play well

In my opinion, you should get fitted once you know you want to continue to play. Most people don't actually practice and get much better. Hey may hit oodles of balls, but never improve much. So at least let the equipment work for you to improve a little and make the game more enjoyable.
If you know you are going to commit to lessons and get better, get a fitting. Buy cheaper used equipment that can be tweaked like forged irons for lie angle. Get steel shafts in all your irons and wedges so you can't over power them and can stay in the same flex for a while and get started with the right size grip. Once you are shooting mid 80s or lower, go get another fitting and buy something much newer OR brand new.

This could be one of the more confusing threads I've read on the forum. 😆
I can see arguments from both sides.
My opinion is that the fitting process is too intimidating, pushy (pushing new clubs), and over-complicated for most new golfers and most casual amateur golfers. I play a lot as a single at public golf courses and more than half of the people I play with, their knowledge of golf equipment ends at how much it cost them. Even some people that have been golfing for 10+ years.
One time, I was playing with a guy who was pretty good and playing a Nitro golf set from Walmart for two years. I asked if he would consider getting fit for more premium clubs and he said, and I quote, "hell would have to freeze over before I hit a ball in front of a pro."

The thing I do is stay near the tee box and keep an eye on everyone's tee shot. I play with guys who hit and just walk off like they don't care about your ball, I just find that to be really rude especially if you're hitting into the sun.
