  1. I definitely it helps, especially on bright, sunny days with little wind.  The UV is better than a traditional umbrella, but a traditional umbrella is better than nothing.  My 12 year old daughter won't play without one on sunny days.  My kids and I have found ourselves walking/playing more here in when we use the umbrella on our push carts.  But when the dew point gets over 70, nothing helps hold off the heat except the breeze.

  2. Hey Y'all,

Been a long time MGS reader and occasionally drop into the forum for the last 10 years or so.  But I have found myself reading the forum more lately and decided to do an intro.

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?  I've been playing golf for over just short of 30 years I think.  Started playing in junior high school.  My current handicap is a 9.2 after a rough spring season.

What do you love about golf?  Now, it is playing with my kids and my wife, sharing the game with is awesome.  I always like the challenge and thrill of a well executed shot.

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?  I am a tinkerer and research shopper, so naturally MGS is a place for people to share experiences and learn about all things golf.  I don't know any other Spies.

Where are you from? What is your home course?  I live in the Upstate of South Carolina.  My home course is Pickens Golf Club.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?  The best part about golf in my region is the people, they enjoy the game and are always friendly.  The worst part is the intense terrain combined with the heat and a lot of the course are in housing developments, it makes walking (my preferred way to play) very difficult.

What do you do for a living?  I am currently a stay at home dad, homeschooling my 3 kids.

How’d you pick your user name?  I've always gone by Kip, and I was in the US Navy.  I picked Navykip back then and it has followed me across main platforms.

@navykip sorry to hear your disappointment in the iron fitting. Was it the same fitter for both your driver and iron shafts?

I did do both fittings together.  And if anything it was a learning experience for me.  I like I said, I kind of knew what I wanted, or what to expect at least with the irons.  They are usually more consistent and I was happy with my older set.  Replacing something you are happy with because they are wearing out is always going to cause some issues, I should have stuck to the decision to not change too much.  But you get caught up in the moment of getting something new.

  4. Thanks for the story of your fitting, I had a similar fitting story as to you recently.  I was fit for irons and driver.  The driver fitting was great, I needed something that would not the spin down and take the "hard left" miss more regularly out of the bag.  It has, and added more yards and better dispersion to the drive than I could have ever expected.

I am skeptical of fittings in general, because the conditions of fittings are drastically different than playing golf.

The iron fitting was different, I knew head what I wanted, and I really like how they feel and interact with the ground.  But I was recommended I change shafts from DG to Nippon Modus.  During the fitting, it felt fine and I hit them with better numbers.  On the course, I cannot stand the ballflight and feeling of the new shafts.  I had played Project X for a few 4 seasons a few years back in my irons, and hit them fine, but never liked the feeling, but eventually moved back into Dynamic Gold.  The Modus shafts have been a total disaster for me.  I cannot feel that at the top of bottom of my swing as I do my old set with dynamic golds and the ball flight.  I will have much more discerning the next time I time I need to change something as tuned in as an iron shaft.

I've always been a Mizuno fan boy when it comes to irons but the ZX5/ZX7 combo set is what finally got me to try something else. I absolutely love mine. I have a ZX5 5 and 6 iron and then ZX7 7-PW. Honestly could've gone with ZX7 the whole way through but not unhappy and can't imagine changing for anything else at all right now. The flight, distance, and feel check all the boxes and they paired really well with my Project X LZ shafts that I love.

They are great clubs, I have the straight ZX7s 4-PW. I was debating going with the ZX5s in the long irons, but I am happy I stuck with the ZX7s instead.

A set of used Srixon ZX7 irons that I tried out on Friday. 4-AW with modus xstiff shafts. The price is right, but I want to swing them again before committing. Any strong opinions on Srixon irons floating around out here?

I have had this set in my bag for about a month. They feel and sound incredible. The turf interaction is the best of any iron I have ever played, perfect for me. The look good at address. And the have given me enough help on the shots I leave out of the toe to not lose too much distance.

They are incredible, but I have two issues with my set. First, I was not a big fan of the AW, it’s a traditionally shaped blade style wedge and doesn’t keep the cavity back like the rest of the set. I didn’t know that, I just would’ve preferred to be a matching cavity back. Be aware.  Second issue for me is the shafts. My fitting told me the modus shafts were better than my regular X100s. During the fitting they felt great, but I am not a fan. The biggest issue is I lose the feel of the club at transition especially in the longer irons. But the lack consistency on impact also. And the ball flight… it’s different than Dynamic Gold.

I will probably reshaft and get rid of the AW after I give myself a little more time to adjust to the differences.

Full disclosure: I have been a user of ShotScope since their inception & a staunch supporter. If you are comfortable wearing a 'watch device' while playing (I can/do), then ShotScope makes a great product worthy of your time/attention. They do not require a subscription fee - a big positive for those of us that can't golf year-round, Their customer service is extremely responsive - great when a course is unmapped (rare) or has been changed (i.e., green moved. bunker added, etc). Yes, I purchased an X5....relegating the V3 to the place where my golf-stuff goes to die....or least take a break & get its act together. 🙄

Prior to ShotScope releasing the X5 watch this year, I invested in Arccos because my new clubs came with their sensors installed. A partnership between Arccos/PING netted me sensors for the rest of my clubs for free. I purchased a Link gen2 at a reduced price, paid for a 1-year subscription 🤬, & voila....I am an Arccos subscriber. Their software is better (read-as more in-depth....if you utilize it) & it was their 'Caddie' feature that intrigued me. NOTE: the Caddie feature isn't functional until you log 5 rounds.

As you can read on this & other forums, ShotScope is a serious contender. My ShotScope V3 never missed a shot/putt. - until I started putting left-hand-low (which placed the watch out-of-range of the putter sensor). The X5 has increased range so that shouldn't be an issue going-forward. Make sure you know how to enter penalty shots, lost ball, etc while playing....if that pertains to you. If not, consider yourself blessed.

Admittedly, my Link/Arccos didn't miss a shot either....all 93 of them 😭  I have the Arccos app on my Samsung watch - yes, it's available - so nothing was lost when I caught myself glancing at my wrist for a yardage (ingrained ShotScope habit), What I didn't care for was referring to my phone quite a bit during the round - a pet peeve of mine. Should have thought about that when wanting the 'Caddie' feature, huh? Well, I have more disposable income than brain cells 🤪

Final verdict (IMO): ShotScope X5. The V3 is serviceable if you are looking to save some additional money. They have upgraded their hardware quite a bit with the X5 & rumor is their software is their next push this season. If more data, analytics, and paying for a subscription while you watch the snow fly is your thing, Arccos can hold its own (subject to change).

Disclaimer: this advertisement wasn't paid for by anyone & may/may not be indicative of your results 😉

    That's a great breakdown.

  8. I have used ShotScope since the version 2, then the V3, and I have my X5 now.  The accuracy is on par with anything GPS device I've used, Garmin, Golfbuddy, or phones.  I think they are great, they have consistently gotten better and made improvements throughout the years.  They now have strokes gained on every shot you hit, so you can see the value of each shot.  The customer service is quick to make adjustments with adding clubs and any course mapping issues.  There is also NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES.  Like most trackers, you have to do some editing sometimes, especially on the green with putting and pins.

Since the X5 was just released, there are plenty of little technical issues, but they will be worked out soon, now they have more players using the watches.
