MEVO (not +) thoughts 3 yrs later?

I know the MEVO has been discussed and reviewed and has been around for a little while. I've read all sorts of pro's and cons and still have interest. I'm looking for some specific feedback, and perhaps from a selective group.

I've been using Optishot2 in my garage setup. It's been fun.. but also has had some challenges. The challenges for me with Optishot2 are mostly between the ears. I'm around a 7 hdcp so my ball striking is mostly consistent. What I struggle with using the Optishot2 is that it feels more like target practice just to hit the ball between the 2 sensors. Mentally I just feel like I can't swing freely without some sort of extra tension in my swing. Although I'm still making good contact, it just doesn't feel as natural. Additionally I question the validity and accuracy of the data from the Optishot2.

Well I have an opportunity to buy a Mevo for pretty cheap ($250). My question for anybody who's made it this far is: Is the data range provided by Mevo enough to help improve a single digit player's game? I'm pretty familiar with my distances, gapping, spin rates, trajectory, etc. I can see the benefits of having it to compare or test different clubs or balls for optimal results, but what exactly can it do for my game?

Ideally, I'd love a LM with shot shaping and disbursement capabilities but unfortunately I just don't have the budget for $600+++. I'd love to hear some feedback from maybe some better, or already "stat-aware" golfers who either found that the Mevo added a value, or just wasn't any more helpful in their quest for game improvement.

Thanks y'all!

  • azstu324 changed the title to MEVO (not +) thoughts 3 yrs later?

I had the Mevo and went to the Mevo+. Different ballgames.

The regular Mevo is fine if you:

  1. Can regularly see your ball flight and won't go months on end without hitting outdoors. Being that you are in Arizona, I don't think this is an issue for you. In Michigan, it's problematic.
  2. Are honest about your ball flight and are not just chasing numbers (if you use your Mevo outdoors).

I cannot speak to the Mevo inside as I never used it for that purpose. The Mevo+ is generally pretty good indoors (although since FlightScope released their PGA show updates the consistency of accuracy with anything above 140 MPH ball speed has been pretty awful for me), so I would suspect the Mevo will be similar. I think the RCT balls work with the standard Mevo as well so spin should be pretty accurate.

I specifically want to highlight point No. 2 because I fell into the "chasing numbers" trap with the regular Mevo a bit. Started trying to hit higher and higher ball speeds and did that by grooving a slinging hook and not being honest with myself at the range. That big of a draw is not playable in real life, and I still fight that today. I enjoy having the Mevo+ dispersion map as it keeps you more realistic with your outcomes.

For $250, the regular Mevo the best of the bunch in that range, in my opinion. And if you don't like it, I would assume you'll be able to get about that much back out of it.

Awesome man thank you for sharing those really great insights!

As far as distance, I stopped chasing that a while ago. I found the distance I was after and then  worked on controlling it (for the most part) now I'm just looking for more consistency and better quality of ball striking. Now that I have a home setup, I'm looking to put in purposeful repetition. I want to know that 9 times out of 10, I can hit my 7i 175 yds.. Not 160, and not 190.. unless I plan to. My hopes are to utilize and optimize the smash factor, launch, and spin setting, until my takeaway, compression, and follow through are dialed in and repeatable without feeling any awkwardness or uncertainty in the process. I will say that the 1 area that the Optishot2 helps keep you in check is club path and face to path so I can always go back to that as needed.

Did you ever do anything with the video capture option? I'm thinking that could be helpful.

No doubt the Mevo+ or like sim's are worth every penny and maybe one day I'll get there. From all of the digging I've done, this unit seems to have the most to offer.

I think I'll pull the trigger.

Yes, that was actually the No. 1 reason I went from the Swing Caddie SC200 to the original Mevo. That was back when I had just started taking lessons and trying to improve my swing, so I wanted the video auto-clipping abilities of the FlightScope app along with the shot data overlay on the video. Worked pretty well for me.

Ironically, I don't really video my swing much anymore, but it's a really cool feature to make use of when I do.

So I'll weigh in with this caveat: while I have owned an Optishot, I've never owned a Mevo, only the Mevo+.

But my thought is that, for indoor practice, using both the Optishot and the Mevo simultaneously could be very interesting and potentially very fruitful.

  • Optishot sees the club path and face but records nothing about the ball.
  • Mevo sees the ball launch, speed, etc., but nothing about the club or ball flight shape.

Using them at the same time would kinda sorta be a very low-end rigged-up Mevo+.

It's funny I've thought the exact same thing. The Optishot2 was a hand me down from a friend.

In a world where I pay full price for stuff, the combined cost of the 2 would put me in R10 to Mevo+ range and all of my problems are solved😜. unfortunately I don't get to live in that world.. so bootlegging is what I know.
