On-Course Fuel

Recommended Posts

What do you all pack for on-course fuel/snacks/hydration? My go-to at the moment is a PB & Honey, couple fruits (apples, pears, orange), and a Liquid IV hydration stick. It has gotten me through this brutal mid-Atlantic summer so far, but I'd love some new ideas and inspiration.

Hot dog and beer at 5, and then another beer at 14. Kidding not kidding.

But in all seriousness I’m always taking sips of water between each hole. Still looking for the right “fuel”. I think protein based items like nuts and Kind  bars, etc don’t seem to work for me. Im thinking of trying either a watered down energy drink or I’ve heard good things about Liquid IV. Maybe I’ll try apple slices.

If it is hot enough I will pour a BioLyte over ice in a yeti cup and sip on that in addition to whatever else I am drinking through the round. That has always kept me feeling pretty fresh.

In warm weather, my first choice is a banana at the turn and 3-4 sports drinks. Lately a lot of those have been Bodyarmor Lyte. For general munching it's granola bars and beef sticks. I think I could do better on that score, so this will be an interesting thread to keep up with.

Water, some sort of electrolyte drink, and usually peanuts or beef sticks.

Just to add to my point, I think timing of all this matters as well. My not-science-backed strategy is always show up to the course full and hydrated (yes, hydration starts from the day before), early in the round mainly munch on high protein and fat (beef sticks, protein bar, PB&J), later in the round go for the glucose and carbs (fruits and gummies), and routinely drink fluids. I particularly found it to be helpful to sip often than chug every now and then. I'm terrible at remembering to drink water until I'm thirsty, so I've made it a routine to drink water after the end of each hole.

Not a nutritionists, but seems to work for me. Just getting really bored of eating the same stuff. Definitely going to incorporate some of your suggestions so far.

64 oz water bottle, mix in Liquid IV or gatorade electrolyte mix if it's really hot. Food is apples/bananas, cashews or almonds, and jerky. Food allergies keep it simple for me.

@Murrrrrrrr I’m not a nutritionist (although hoping we have one on this forum), but I tend to agree with your thinking. You need to be refueling as you go — not when you hit empty. I also think that carbs are better than proteins along the way.

@barney_bogeyI'd only judge you if you put all that in a blender and drank it as a smooth haha. Just kidding, this is a judgement free zone.

If you haven't given it a try, this is going to sound weird, but try freezing the uncrustables the night before and eat them around the 6th or 7th hole. There is something special about a cold uncrustable on a hot day. Please don't judge...

Brother you're talking my language! Frozen when I leave, perfect by the time I need fuel. I try to eat on 6/12.

My golf buddies laughed when I pulled the first one out, then stuck out their hands when I pulled the rest of the box, lol!

Just some middle aged men with jobs and families eating kid's lunches. No big deal.

@barney_bogey and @Murrrrrrrr  while I’ve always been “judge-y” about uncrustables — mostly the white bread part — Im now intrigued. I’ll test this one out!

I always have at least 1 Body Armor in my bag for hydration and an insulated cup of ice water. Also have an energy drink either before or on the first couple holes. Snacks I'm not huge on, usually have Pistachios or beef jerky in my bag or some sort of protein bar. Currently my gf is buying every flavor of Built Puff bars so it will probably be one of those the next few times out. If its early I'll throw some pop tarts in my bag to eat the first few holes because i probably didnt eat breakfast at that point. Hot days I usually pack a couple water bottles and fill my insulated cup with ice. Then throw some liquid IV packs in my bag. We bought a bunch of the bomb pop flavor for a 2 day festival so I'm going to put those to use.

My go to has been some sort of trail mix and beef jerky. I do cosign on the hydration sticks (liquid IV or other), typically go back and forth between straight water and hydration on water bottle fills, on sober golf rounds. Been wanting to mix in more "real food" but have always felt heavy after eating at the turn. Usually wait for post round meal.

Quick update for the group. Today was a hot / humid day in Chicago. So I tried out Liquid IV “Hydration Multiplier” by putting one package into a water bottle for nine holes. Then I made sure to take a sip between each hole. At the turn I did the same thing. Made another bottle of Liquid IV and used it for the back nine. Full disclosure, I also kept a “clean bottle” of water if I wanted to drink more along the way.

Long story short, Liquid IV seemed to help me out. I didn’t really lose any energy or feel a “bonk”. I played over lunchtime and didn’t really feel hungry — although I did stop for a few peanut butter on crackers at 14 not because I was hungry but just knowing I should get some fuel in me.

Liquid IV packs will be going into my bag. Next step … PB&J or PB&Honey Uncruatables!  @barney_bogey and @Murrrrrrrr

I've always done water. A few sips each hole and sliced apple, "honey Crisp" as they are juicy and somewhat tart.

Also an update inspired by @Hacker60521...walked 27 holes yesterday where temperature at the start of the round was 97 degrees. Before the round I made a rice bowl with ground beef and an avocado for protein and healthy fats. Also had some cashew for a post meal snack on the way to the course. On the course, I had a Liquid IV in my water at the start, had a PB&J on the 8th, and an apple on the 14th. Additionally, sipped on water at the end of every hole.

One new thing that I tried, which may be controversial, was sunflower seeds. Don't worry, I hate seeing them spit on the green and tee box too so I had my personal spit bottle. I feel like it helped me stay satiated throughout the round and gave me some needed sodium lost through sweat (I'm definitely not a light sweat-er). Also, a little beside this thread but relevant, I feel like cracking sunflower seeds kept me busy in-between shots. I'm a believer in taking your mind away from the game between shots to prevent mental fatigue.

Honestly, felt pretty good after walking 27 holes. Legs were naturally tired, but nothing that felt like due to lack of fuel.

I know of a protein meal replacement drink that is the best I have ever had. Drink this and your body feels like it actually ate something. The seller ran across this at some health natural healing show. She was so impressed. She asked the maker if she could sell it. She deals with really high quality effective stuff. I won't bore you pushing her.

https://rnareset.com/collections/all-formulas/products/restructure-protein-powder-vanilla

I have mixed this up in a small cup of water. Can make it thick like a milk shake. You can do whatever you want with it. It doesn't require anything for storage. It won't go bad.

To be candid.... I would rather walk a field with a good Bird Dog, than to walk a golf course with people. Only problem is, I can't walk.

Sipping water throughout. A small bag of trail mix and another of peanuts after the turn. Usually munch on those for about three holes, maybe more. And usually a beer at the turn because…golf…
