Opinions/Advice: Senior irons

So I got my father in law interested in golf several years ago, but he's a cheapskate so I found some knock-off irons with graphite shafts for him for about 100 bucks.

Since then he's retired and joined a local nine hole club down the street.  He tries to play at least 2-3 times per week and since he's getting older and playing more he needs some clubs that fit him better.  He's pretty fit for 76, has creaky hips so he can't turn on the ball, doesn't swing very hard and has a short-ish backswing.... and did I mention he's a cheapskate?  Not sure why he was a very successful attorney for 40 years.

Anyhow - does anyone have any suggestions for a set of irons that I can either get for him or suggest he look into?  I was thinking something along the Adams line but I have no idea where to begin.  Should he get "senior" shafts?

Thanks for any advice/opinions/suggestions!

I'd say buy him a professional fitting, then go from there

Haha... very funny Peter.  This is not a man that would even consider such luxuries!  Even though there is a fantastic all grass range right next to the course, he *never* bothers to use it.

Noticed your in NJ, he lives in Basking Ridge and is a member at the 9 hole coakley-russo course at the VA hospital in Lyons.  A short but fun little course that fits him perfectly.

Well then you may want to look at what you already suggested Adams makes a tight lies set for seniors that's supposed to be great according to some retired guys I've played with, check eBay. Good luck

Do you a dollar figure in mind? Callaway pre-owned would get him something nice. Flex is a subjective question in its own right (since there is no industry standard on flex as each company has their own interpretation) but a light weight shaft and graphite would be the ticket for him I think. Would make a nice present from the family.

Well, I'm not 76 but I'm getting closer every year!!  No creaky hips, but bad lower back, and I have a shortish backswing.  It still all depends on on swing speed, and the transition on the downswing.  Although mine is short, my transition is quick so I stick with regular flex in a heavier weight.  Just because someone has a short backswing, doesn't mean they need senior shafts.  JB Holmes has a short backswing compared to DJ, JD, and RM but he hits it just as far.

Senior shafts are fine if the swing speed is less than 80, maybe 85 unless the transition is quick.  My wife has been playing TaylorMade Burner XD irons in senior flex for about 8 years and loves them.  Her swing speed has gone down some, but she still hits them fine.  Maybe someday I will reshaft them, because the heads still look new.

I think any major brand in a senior flex will work fine.  It all comes down to which look/brand he prefers, but at least get the length and lie correct!!

Anything that has a low center of gravity. That with the combination of a senior shaft that has some kick on the bottom end will do good I think.

My ex boss retired last year (hince ex boss) I have played golf with him for years before he was ever my boss. Now he is 72 years old and has a bad back and had rotator cuff surgery last year. He was wanting me to build him some hybrids and go all hybrid. Just happened I had done a trade deal and ended up with an older set of Adams GT Tight Lies irons. These are the ones with the large soles and cavity back. These happened to have senior flex Adams graphite shafts in them. I told him to hit those. He did and fell in love with them. Actually when I did the trade I checked the value guide on them and they were only worth $25 or so. I actually gave him those Adams and he gave me his old clubs which were mixed clones. I promptly donated them to a jr golf program.
