Buying a non-conforming Krank driver (and a 3-wood) with the owner/founder's "fitting" and "COR made for less than 105 mph club speed sales pitch"  over the phone...wasted $500...recuped but $130 on Ebay.  Contrary to the "pitch", the club hit the ball too high with more spin than any of my current crop of Cobras or PXG...less carry, less roll out.  Never again!  Actually, I came up with yet another...went to a golf school that "included a fitting" - they recommended a Callaway Hyper X driver which I bought....I lost 15 yds on my drives and was blaming "advancing age"!  Fortunately, on a Sunday after playing 18 at my local muni, Bridgestone was onsite doing a ball fitting and I took advantage of the opportunity.  At the end, in addition to their ball recommendation (a Bridgestone...surprise), the fitter said, "Even if you don't buy a Bridgestone driver, I recommend you get something different (than the Hyper X), because it's designed to hit the ball higher with more spin, something you do not need."  I drove from the course immediately to a local golf store and, after trying many, ended up with a Callaway FT...voila got my 15 yds back and gave the Hyper X to my older brother who needed the height and spin.

Sometimes I grip down on the club, but it depends on the shot.  Never use the word "choke" on the golf course.

Not sure my game will ever be good enough for that hallowed venue, but play it I would, just that once.  Furthermore, I've had the pimento cheese sandwich and it's got garlic in it, an aversion to which I share with none other than Tiger Woods.  I can see most of the same players at the API.

As both a newb, and a budget conscious golfer, I look for cost, condition, and challenge. (Not challenging!)
I'm fortunate enough to have  courses relatively close by (15 minutes up to 45 minutes away) average round is from $25-60.
What makes it great, is if I enjoyed the overall experience of that particular course.

I've never paid over $100 for a greens fee.  There are only a couple of courses where I'd have made an exception in the past, but, alas, inflation has greens fees increasing all over.

Diving in a little deeper,  I am assuming face on line means you struggle with face control and starting the ball on your intended line.  Some questions/thoughts:
how well do you do making 3’ putts? what is you 50/50 make distance? do you do ok with distance control? what do you do to work on face control? Have you tried putting with your eyes closed?  Lots of people especially on shorter putts turn during the stroke to look at the hole and see the putt go in. why do you play the ball position you play and what is the ball position? do you use a line on the ball and if so does it look aligned correctly when you are over the putt? how do you practice your putting?

bassman reacted to BIG STU in Long or "Broomstick" Putters - Anyone?
I putted with a broomstick for about a year. I was having mental problems putting with a conventional putter. Now for me the broomstick putter really putted well from 5 ft in. So So on long putts and useless off the fringe. I am old school as heck and anytime if off the green I can get the putter in my hand I do so. One thing anything you do wrong with a broomstick it will be equally worse. Like say with a conventional you pull a putt 2 inches off line you will pull it 4 inches or more with a broomstick. I also during that time worked on a new method instead of my lifetime way of arc putting I went to SBST with a claw grip. Worked good for me
Now back after I had my accident in April 2000 3 weeks after I was released from the hospital I was out on our putting green back brace and crutch and putted with my old Ping B-90I broomstick. I also converted back an old Bobby Grace V-Foil that had been a broomstick to begin with back to broomstick status. I wanted to get out and move some. I putted so so with either one. But soon after I healed enough to practice some I went back to my Santa Fe. Now I did some work on it. For a tall guy 6' 2" I always bent down and used a 33" putter. Could no longer practice much that bent over. I ended up putting a 35" Fluted Bulls Eye shaft in the Scotty and changing the lie slightly. Have gotten use to it now> But seriously I will hang on to the broomhandles because you never know because of my back I may have to go back to one.
I do know some of the "stigma" concerning the anchoring etc. We got paired up with an older gentleman one day who was putting with one on the putting green. When they  called us up he stated to my other buds that he used a long putter. My buds are like me do not give two hoots and we told him we did not give 2 hoots if he anchored or not or if he stuck it up is wazoo to putt the first tee was over there tee it up. So if you feel comfortable going to one by all means do so. IMHO if someone raises hell about that then play with someone else because they are not worth playing with anyhow. Now in stipulated events you are ok there as long as you do not anchor the top hand to your sternum. And I know there is a gray area there

bassman got a reaction from eviceman in Poll: Driving Range Warmup Before Playing a Round?
9 of the 13 courses I regularly play, don't have practice ranges.  Instead, they offer a "batting cage" with one or two stations...always too crowded to hit more than 5-10 shots.  Instead, I've taken to stretching, especially shoulder/rotator cuffs and making a few swings with an Orange Whip. 4:20 rounds are pretty "standard" - not sure I'd be thrilled with adding another 30 minutes of range time.

bassman got a reaction from cksurfdude in Has anyone tried Jumbomax grips?
This looks like an old thread; however, it just popped up in one of the links in a mygolfspy email.  JumboMax grips saved my golf game, thanks to arthritis in my hands, particularly my trail hand (right) in which I cannot make a fist.  I use the MD (Medium) Tour Series and recently purchased some of the Ultralite grips, just to try.  I've used the MD Tour Series for the last 3 years to success.  My hcp index is 8.4 and I've shot my age (now 75) 4 straight years in a row at least once a year.  I've used the grips on both graphite (driver and fairway metals) and steel (KBS Tour...irons), though I've recently switched from my 2nd set of Cobra One Length irons (wore out the first set) to a conventional set of Ping's with Recoil S shafts.  I would recommend trying ONE Tour Series, perhaps with 6 or 7 iron to see if the counterbalance really matters to you.  Tip...these grips can be fairly easily put on and removed with a compressor and no grip tape (got that tip from JumboMax Support).  In addition to not ruining the grip should decide you don't like it, it also makes it easy to reorient the grip on adjustable drivers (e.g. Cobra, Cleveland) that rotate the shaft with adjustment.  Incidentally, Bryson uses the XL Ultralites, which he switched to, from the Tour Series XL, when he went to all graphite LAGolf shafts in his single length irons.
