Nippon Modus³ Tour 115 Golf Shaft - Official MyGolfSpy Review by Steve Davies

    Introduction:
Firstly, a huge thanks to MSG and Nippon for giving me the opportunity to test and review the Modus³ Tour shafts. I’ve been lucky to be chosen for 2 reviews now so, hopefully, I can do a great job and report to you guys, the readers, what I think of these new Nippon shafts.

The boring bit - About me!!
I’m 48, happily married with 2 amazing girls and I live in a lovely little town called Malvern in the heart of England. It’s a town made famous by its water, Morgan Motors and The Hills, 13 miles of stunning countryside.
I’m a CNC programmer by trade so have a keen eye for quality and finish which I shall be running the shafts under.
I’ve only been playing golf, properly - if that’s the best way to describe it - since the start of 2021 after a very long break.
I played as a junior with my dad, right handed to start with as I was using his clubs, then took a break to play football (soccer to our American readers), ride mountain bikes and undertake a social apprenticeship in the local taverns…
I’m now playing off 12.8 after starting on 24 last year so my game is coming on well but inconsistency is my main problem. I’m practising as much as I can and would love to get to single figures by the end of this year - that’s my goal.
I’m quite a physical player, high swing speed and like to attack the pin - maybe I should play the percentages more but I just can’t help it!

    My testing game-plan.
As a group of testers it looks like we will be doing similar things - on the course feel and results.
That being said I would like to see improvements on launch, spin and dispersion with the new Nippon shafts compared to my current Dynamic Gold S300 I have in my Mizuno MP54’s.
I’m going to be testing an X-Flex in the Nippon as I feel my swing speed should match them better.
To get a fair comparison I will be having a ‘gapping’ session with the pro at my club on his GC2 with my current set up and will record my averages.
I’ll then get the shafts swapped over and do the same testing to give me some figures to compare between the two shafts.
I think the comparison may come in handy for someone looking at a similar shaft swap.

As I have already received the shafts (along with a nice goody bag containing a couple of t-shirts, caps and a magnetic ball marker) and I know many of you like the fine details I’ve weighed the shafts, measured the length to check for consistency and had a good, visual inspection to see how they look from an aesthetic approach.
    Spoiler: They look fantastic!!

I’ve also calculated the swing weight of my current setup so will be able to compare the two once the swap over is done.
I’ll then get them out on the course and see how they perform.

I am very excited to try these new Nippon Modus³ shafts as I have only ever played with the shafts that have been fitted to the clubs I have bought.
Never really looked too much into the shaft specifications but after doing some reading up and comparing these to my current shaft and taking into account what I have learned over the last year I concluded that these could be ideal for the improvements I would like to see in my game.

For these to go in my bag I’m looking for a higher launch, more spin and better dispersion - I’m not fussed about distance as I do hit a long ball.
If you have any questions or tests you would like me to include, please leave a message and I’ll do my best to answer or include in my review.

    Let’s do this!!

Really enjoy following along on this one!  You guys are doing great!  I wanted to throw a few questions out there if you guys don't mind.
Do you feel any difference in weighting?  I know, especially with Evnroll, that they change their head weights with the length of the shaft.  Do you feel like you would have needed to get a lighter/heavier head because of the graphite shaft?
How were you guys "fit" for the flex of the shaft between Smooth, Firm, X-Firm?  If you could, would you change the stiffness after having this one for a bit?
How would you recommend people to try a graphite putter shaft to see if it is worth $250 before just dropping that amount?

Sorry that I am late but weather has not been our friend with the tropical storm season upon us on the east coast.  I love the look and feel of the ERV2 but the grip that I asked for was a 104c and the sent a 140c which as you see is much bigger and does not set well in my fingers.  Does it affect the performance?  Our greens are fast for a much used municipal golf course, running normally around 11 and having around 65K plus rounds a year.  Lots of thumbprints, redans, bowls, undulations and fast greens.  A renovation with Seth Raynor type greens and bunkers.   .
Round         1-10ft  11-30ft   31-50ft    51+ft  (to understand the below numbers, 1/2 would be one two putt)
    1 #/putts         5/1      7/2          1/2          1/2
                                              1/3                               1/3
                                                                                    1/4              33 putts
    2 #/putts        3/1       1/1          1/2         1/2
                           1/2        6/2        1/3          1/3
                           1/3        1/4                                             35 putts
    3 #/putts        3/1       5/2         1/2          1/2
                           2/2       1/3           1/3            1/3
                           1/3        1/4                                            37 putts
    4 #/putts       4/1         5/2         1/2           1/2
                          4/2                                         1/4            30 putts
As you can see with my play, my number of putts increased from day one as I tested the product, until the last day.  Day one the greens had been punched three days prior and were slow and the putter worked fairly well and as they sped up the number of putts did increase some.  It is heavy which would be great for those playing on slower greens running in the 8-10 range.   The loft on this putter is set at 4* which is for slower greens.   Of the 135 putts made 96 of them were within the 1-30 foot range.  As you can see the three/four putts are bolded and there the same in the under 30 feet as in the over thirty feet.  That is my reason for saying that this putter is better suited for slower or flatter greens.  As a former auditor numbers and statistics are there for interpretation.  Me I like to know how it feels, lines up and putts.  If you hit the ball outside the milled area, you will definitely hear and feel it.  Something I am not accustomed to.  A real shocker the first time I played with it.  It lines up nicely but the weight is a bit much for me.  I am used to a lighter putter and think that the head and the grip on this putter have added a bit of weight to a great shaft.  I would mind having one of these shafts in one of my Scotty Cameron putters to test.  I am a big fan of Fujikura products and all my metals have their shafts in them.  I feel that the best test for any product is on the course.  My group laughs at me as I walk off the distances as line up my putts and one asked me one day what I was doing when I was gathering the data.  I most likely will have one more when I return to play next week.  I like to give every product every chance.  Cheers.

So as I said earlier, got out yesterday afternoon for a bit to a local courses practice green. Usually one of the better greens around but boy was it in rough shape. Overall I am happy with the practice and was pretty consistent but had one real bad grouping (listed below you will see what I am talking about).
So I went all around the green, focus was:
All putts were >10' All different lies from the 1st cut (didn't go against the collar of rough because like I said before was in pretty rough shape and I honestly dont know where the balls would have gone) Used 6 balls and went 2 center, 2 toe and 2 heel. I am not a robot but I felt pretty consistent with my stroke and making contact where I intended

Had some misreads here and there you will see in the video below, 1st one was very short and the 2nd stroke leaked right but still within reasonable distance for a 2nd make and this was about 25'

    Takeaways:
Off center strikes are noticeable, shaft helps with the feel but it still feels dull. Roll and line (like I said am not a robot) to me felt consistent. Little more oomph I think is needed off the toe vs the heel IMO but feel wise on contact they felt the same. Confident coming out of the fringe even with how bumpy it was, don't believe the shaft is the catalyst for this but setup as a whole hell yea. Really enjoying the feel, I can be consistent striking and am loving centering this setup on the face and running at pins.  I did not take the 2nd putts but as a whole minus the 1 outlier where I was just lightyears away confident in saying these would have all been 2 putts for the ones I did not hit the stick (did not have many, believe it was 3 pin hits, but from the distances and areas I was coming from and the condition of the green I was pretty ecstatic) Was short on a lot which is ok, greens were much slower than I am used to. Some of the groupings:
    Fringe about 30':

    On the green about 40+':

    Fringe about 12':

Fringe about 40+' and this is the poor grouping I was talking about before, long way and the fringe was rough at best:

Round upcoming this weekend at a new track, looking forward to it!

Was able to get out for about 45 minutes to a local course practice green. Some details later but had some good groupings! Best of the batch came towards the end uphill about 15 feet 1 “made” since they don’t have cups.
Don’t worry about that guy 😂

Had another stellar round with the Fujikura and ER2V today.
Had my hiccups with pace on some and typical misreads, too much credit, not enough credit….you know how it goes.
But this setup is proving to be just what I need in the 10’-25’ realm where I had no consistency prior. Helped me to 4 birdies today, and 7 (1) putts with 4 of the distances being 10’, 15’, 18’ and 22’. I can honestly say I probably didn’t have a single 1 putt this year prior to receiving this in that range…..Really feeling confident lining up  and even more confident that I’m going to roll it end over end and I can really give it a roll.
Have never seen that green before

So, I guess I'll take both of these posts on at once here. Cnosil is right, this is ultimately a test of DDC, not the clubs, however, considering we're in a familiarization process with the clubs right now  it makes sense that a lot of our posts early on would lean to that. Now, what's interest for me as a tester here is that I'm in a cold weather climate, right? Central New York is not golf 365 like my friends in CA and TX in this test. Therefore, when I teased testing their shipping out I meant that I won't be waiting until 2022 releases to spend my last two. I plan on ordering a second driver before the end of the year to see how well they ship from Austin to Syracuse in a lake effect snow condition.
Now, as far as things I was looking for in the initial order, I only wish we had gotten the service up and running sooner. Admittedly, the RadSpeed was a choice, but it wasn't my first choice, or even 2nd choice to be honest. Choice #1 was Ping's 425 line, most likely the LST. The reasons were a couple fold, one, they had it offered with the Tensei Orange shaft that I feel would fit me best of any stock offering shaft by any manufacturer because of how much I liked in my Mizuno test, but at 50 grams it was too light, 60 grams though... that's the business. Plus, I was intrigued by their poor performance in the Most Wanted testing, it seemed a weird outlier and one I was eager to try.
Second choice were the new Srixon model, ZX5 and ZX7, however at the time of order they were not available. It appears they are now, but with impending 2022 releases and other drivers higher on my list to try, it seems unlikely I will go in that direction. It bears stating here that RadSpeed is what it says on the tin, a distance monster, but not the most forgiving on mishits.
I hope that answers some of the preliminary questions. Obviously we have a way to go to form an opinion on the service as a whole, but that's where I feel I'm at with a starting point.

Definitely I can see all the testers diving into these questions throughout their review process. One additional thing to keep in mind is they got a year subscription for the service and with that will be providing updates over that time I would say. I can say from being involved on the back end they were pretty quick to get out the product to them and what I am a little more curious about is how quickly they are able to stock the brand new drivers that come in the spring. With them being able to test 3 for a season I have a sneaking suspicion they will hold onto these until the new ones get released and use their "final 2" going into next season... however that is just my guess. How do you guys plan to split up your 3 in a season and was the selection what you were hoping for or was there any that you really wanted to try but wasn't able to either because they didn't offer or out of stock?

Got out on the course again yesterday for 9, and the new driver helped me make 3 birdies! I’m getting used to the sound of the epic, it is definitely different. I’ve checked the DDC site a few times, but there aren’t any new shaft offerings so I’ll continue to use the AllFit adapter on my Accra shaft until something new comes out to try. I am not sure this is going to end up my gamer, but it is really nice to be able to have an extended on course test. I find it takes time to trust the driver, and while our time together started off with red flags, I’m starting to develop a fondness for it.

In response to my post over in the How'd You Play thread and @bens197asking how Radspeed Rd1 went, I figured I'd answer over there, but then I thought, no, it fits better here, so I copied and pasted from that draft to land here. Here's my take away as to how it performed
I'll say this, it depends on my swing. It feel as if I have three different swings with the driver. The base swing, the steery swing, and the balanced swing. I'm trying to get more balanced swing than base swing right now, but both produce good results.
With the base swing, I get a nice fade ball flight, a little higher spinning, higher launching tee shot that normally carries  in the 220-230 range. In the humid air we were in on Sunday and with no roll, this dropped it back to around 210-220 and I was just coming low on the face.
The balanced swing is the "everything goes right model". This is the max out driver, carry in the 240 range with drives going out to 260-270 on roll. Admittedly, I'd love for this to be the base model, but it's a work in progress right now. This is where Radspeed really performs and it's where I feel like I'm swinging hard at the bottom, but not necessary fast through the whole swing, if that makes sense.
The steery swing in the one right now giving me problems. I've often had a bad habit on swinging from the top and just going super fast at times where I feel I need to really make a pass at it. Basically, I speed everything up, whether it's anger at the round or feeling like this is one you've got to kill. This leads to me feeling like I'm manipulating my path to get some kind of result. These normally lead to duck hook nothingness and with Radspeed's low spin profile you are super punished. The ball is barely in the air long enough to say so. I had 4 shots like that, averaging sub 200 off the tee, including one going 136 yards.
So, what do I need to do? One, work on getting more the that balanced swing into my game. Two, maybe I can play with the weight a bit to make the club more neutrally weighted for mishits instead of very low spin. Three, it just might take time to dial it in, it was only my first "play by own round" instead of a scramble that I've played with it. I'll keep you all posted.

AS the remnants of Fred have entered Central NY, I figure now is as good a time as any to update you as the benchmark numbers to defeat the current reigning, defending, undisputed, driver champion of my bag... the Mizuno ST180. For those of you with long enough memories you'll remember this club was the first club I have had the opportunity to test and review on this forum, so it holds a dear place with me, and it flat out performs.
According to Arccos and the 275 shots it has tracked, here are the meaningful stats as to my driver.
Smart Range: 236 yards to 261 yards
    Smart distance (average): 243 yards
    Longest Drive: 306 yards
Fairway accuracy: 35.2% fairway, 34.1% miss left, 30.8% miss right
So what I am looking for? Well, I'd like to see that average creep ever so slightly to the 250-255 range. Ball speed should be higher off the Cobra, at least it was in comparing the the two drivers in MGS testing and spin was slightly lower from Cobra as well. Obviously accuracy is a big one for me as well, but it's also more about making sure the shot goes where I aim it. I can live with a missed fairway if it means I'm taking advantage of the hole or missing it in the right place. This is one of those things where I don't think Arccos tells the whole story as I have some shorter par 4's that if I go for them to get into up and down scenarios it count's as a missed fairway, but I digress. Something in the 40-45% realm will be more than solid enough for me.

I’ve now been on the course twice with the new driver, once with the stock shaft and once with my Accra.
About the driver…the epic max LST definitely hits bombs. I’ve noticed it is forgiving, but definitely has a right side bias. I really have to turn over to hit draws. The sound of kind of funky, and will definitely take some getting used to. It also has a higher ball flight than I’m used to, despite being a 9.0 head.
About AllFit adapter…this is pretty cool! I was bummed to see it doesn’t operate like a traditional callaway sleeve, but swapping heads is a simple process which seems like it will pair really well if DDC if you have a shaft you enjoy. Worthwhile purchase!
About Dollar Drive Club…I really like that I’m two rounds in with this driver. As a mid-capper, I can’t just pick up any club and pure it out of the gates. There’s going to be an adjustment period as I get dialed in. Knowing that I can keep using this driver, and if it ends up not being a winner I can just return it, is really cool. It definitely adds a sense of confidence that I’m going to find a driver I will fall in love with. At a fitting you can pure a driver and feel really good about it, but when you take it to the course every bad shot feels like a stark declaration that you made a $500 mistake. I think DDC will help you either settle into a driver with confidence, or provide the flexibility to always swap out heads on your never ending tinker quest.
My next step is to hit the range with the launch monitor to see a head to head comparison between the M5 and the Epic to see if there’s anything in the numbers to help me decide which direction to go.

Nope love questions, makes testing a lot easier! I know I can get into a single frame of mind so getting others thoughts and questions in really help me (especially this as a putter can be a fairly difficult test)
    1) I need to weigh everything and get a comparison. But I believe the 2V head is @ 34" is 365 grams, shaft 115 grams and with the gravity grip another 125 grams. I believe my odyssey is 350 grams (need to confirm) and the typical steel shaft around 110 grams (guessing) also need to verify my super stroke weight as it has the counterbalance weight. Long story short though the FUJI setup feels slightly heavier (gravity grip assists that for sure) but I am loving it. As a whole feels very balanced and the balance points on both in my original picture are more or less exactly the same. The 365 gram head feels right.
    2) I was not fit I just took a stab based on description. If I had a choice I would test all 3! But right now feel like I made a pretty sound decision on shaft.
    3) More on this later when I do a final review don't want to divulge to much to early, but I will leave it at we are not professionals I think a lot of anyone that will read these reviews base at least a portion of their decision on cost no? This will definitely be part of my thoughts.

I’ll add a little context on my thoughts here.  Again, I have not been able to play yet but I’ve hit about 100 putts on the carpet to get a feel.

The weight to me feels normal, as any putter, all 3 Fujikura shafts are 115g.  I chose the smooth and holding it and making a stroke it doesn’t feel lighter or more flexible.  Now if you shake it, you can see some bend.

i don’t think any of us got fit but I certainly did not. Fujikura has some decent descriptions online that I chose off of.  The X Is for more of a pop stroke like Snedeker.  I have a softer, smoother, light at impact stroke so the smooth seems to fit me.

    hope that helps a little!

So after my round with the kiddos today went to the practice green for almost 2 hours. It was really awesome. Rolled intermediate 20' putts and long 45' putts with both the Fujikura/ER2V setup and the ER2B steel shaft (thanks @B.Boston) and we also did a little competition with the boys rolling putts and totaling strokes to make the putt from random spots.
Got a good video of roll from about 15'
Focus was taking both setups and taking multiple shots just seeing any real noticeable differences between the two since the heads are nearly identical. I setup tees for ball placement and stroke so that I was taking the same stroke every time (this stroke rolled right to the 45' hole) white tee was stroke, black tee was ball placement.

While both feel awesome I feel at this moment the shaft feels like steel start to finish on these long distance putts, major difference? Feel at contact. It is slightly muted. Both feel great on the takeaway, I really feel where the head is at all times, which again I think is helping me keep that head square. Impact feels so pure again I can really only explain it as though it feels like there is no shaft between the grip and head. Both were rolling perfectly and distance control was second to none.
Without the tees both strokes were extremely consistent.
I really love the the look of this shaft though:

The saga continues though. I intend to get a lot more of these comparisons between these two putters because its the closest I can get to the same setup minus the shaft. Anyone looking for some other information?
