Got out to the putting green for the 3rd time in 4 days. Working on my initial impression for the sentio review.

This is as close as I can get to the original finish on the old school Cameron oilcan classics.

This was in real rough shape when I picked it up, but I only have one pic from then, unfortunately.

Here's a Sonoma I picked up for $100 at the used golf swap shop down the street the other day.

It's kinda hit/miss. I've ruined a few putters by not understanding what I was working with to begin with. *Most* Camerons are just blasted stainless. The beadblasting produces that satin Finish. However the earlier newports are gun blued, and the black mist Finish on the select series from a few years ago is PVD. Finally, the studio design line has some electroplated Finish that is a real mf'er to try to strip-dont even bother.

Gianninis are generally either PVD or plated.

Bettinardi, except for the DASS heads, usually has some kind of pvd finish.

Torching a pvd head can produce cool results... but it's not worth picking up a beat up putter with a pvd finish because it's nearly impossible to "restore" or smooth out the imperfections while maintaining the finish. Plus if it's beat up, chances are the pvd is chipping anyway.

Here's a Golo with that black mist pvd that I torched a month or two ago:

Now I'm off to boston on business for the bulk of the week. Coming back thrs night. At least the flight will give me time to finish up my stage 2 review of the Sentio. It's a great putter. Blown away by it actually. I don't know what I'm gonna do with 4 days of not scouring the golf shops in DFW for used putters that can be brought back to life.

Paint might last 3 swings with a wedge. Maybe. If you're lucky.

I've found that when doing the cherry dots on Camerons, it's best to reallllllly thin the paints either in the paint mix, or by swabbing the dot with a q-tip soaked in isopropyl alcohol. The first drop should rush to the edges of the dot and then fill in from there with additional drops.

Cool. Then in that case you can torch it to daaaaaaaark blue almost black (see newport TeI3 head I posted a few weeks ago) then just quench it, while still hot right after torching, in motor oil or 2-cycle oil or even liquid wrench oil to seal it. You just have to be able to entirely submerge the head in the quench. It will also darken during the quench - if you blast it prior to torching, it will be a matte finish. If you polish it will be glossy.

Imo the Wedge vs putter is an apples/oranges comparison. Putting is and should be generally pretty low impact- that is, the collision between ball and club is, well it's hardly even a collision. Contrasted against the strike that occurs on a full wedge swing... I've worn the faces of brand new vokeys down in a summer before. I was playing daily, but still, repeated impact takes a toll. Paint will chip scuff and look like hell after a few strikes - full swings are violent. I have a vokey that I did in polymer and a Callaway 3 iron. Neither finish lasted through impact with more than 4 balls. I'll find pics and post.

    Hey MGSers

I thought it might be cool to have a central thread for the group to share pics/details of recently completed projects, ideas, stucks, ask/answer questions, help those who are beginning the highly rewarding process of DIY refurbs/finishes avoid some of the landmines we ran (and sometimes still run) into throughout the course of a project, and maybe even have a contest or two, etc..

If there's already a thread like this, then feel free to scold, mock, and ridicule, but as I browsed (aka: admired) the forum and members' projects, I didn't see one. There's a wealth of collective knowledge and talent within the pages of this community, so it will be neat to see what this thread yields if y'all are inclined to share.

In the spirit of getting us started, here are the three Camerons I've completed over the course of the last 3-4 weeks. I work almost exclusively on putters. I enjoy them most. I've done a couple wedges and woods with moderate success and tried to black ox a set of T-Zoids when I first became interested in this stuff, which was an unmitigated disaster.

    Golo 3:

The before state on this one was basically mint, so envision a factory Golo 3 here (i.e. I didn't take a before pic)

    After:

    Studio Select Squareback #2:

Another putter in very good shape before I started it, other than a tiny bit of bag chatter.

    After:

    Studio Stainless Newport Beach:

This one was really chewed up when I got a hold of it. Topline, neck, body all mangled, paintfill chipped and fading, etc... Took some serious sanding and filing to get it into reasonable shape.

Yeah in some form or fashion. Either strip the pvd/plating and black oxide or blast followed by black polymer.

At the time, I hadn't quite put my finger on it but many of you have quite eloquently framed the reason I finally pulled the trigger and created a profile. Put simply, the people here are nice, maybe the nicest group of this size on the net. Golf has played a very special role in my life and I have spent a great deal of time in deep thought on the subject (in all areas). I know the tone of my typical post tends toward Brookings Institution reports, but I ultimately just hope to add some thoughtful perspective to the threads in which I participate. Over the past 2 months (joined 1/26/17) the MGS forum has become ubiquitous as oxygen in my life. So to everyone, I would like to say, Thank You for being yourself!

I also figured out quickly that this was the only site without all of the huge egos. Feels like home here, and that's pretty rare on the internet anymore.

Your polymer is too thick and you're spraying it on too thick is why it's wrinkling. It needs to be thinned down, atomized more and sprayed from a further distance. And you'll want a bake on product

The original insert. Was thinking about torching Bronze, but I like the extreme contrast of black and silver
