  1. Non conforming balls will be called cheater balls. EVERY major will impose the local rule. Every PGA premier Level 1 event will impose MLR. You can see it coming, otherwise why make the rule ? Yes, I play one ball. No, I don't use rangefinder or slope. No, I don't play winter rules or roll ball over and neither do my friends. We do take mulligan. We won't do stroke distance on a unexpected lost ball. And we won't play with cheater balls.
  2. If I read correctly, the majority of premium balls are non compliant at FUTURE club head speed vs distance specs. If ball flies 317 or less at 120mph club head robot speed ball passes. If ball flies 317 or more @127mph, fail in future. If the ball goes further at speed over 120, it fails. This doesn't bifurcate. It puts a limit on balls, and dials balls back 5% or so. A prov1(x) will be modified to conform. Recreational players will buy conforming or non conforming balls. 99% of people I play with will use a CONFORMING ball. They won't use a cheater ball.
  3. Putter won't change Old muscleback 7(38), 8(42), 9(46), PW(52), SI(56) won't change Titleist 917 Driver FW won't change Guess my swing better change !!!
  4. I've viewed this event as a Masters preview...who is in form, who is struggling. I only watched Sunday coverage consistent with what I do for any tournament other than Slam events. Clearly Scheffler is playing a level above others.
  5. Depends on a variety of issues and are you concerned about youth learning costs or modest income adult costs ? All across Scotland, very nice courses are available to play $20-$30 a round. Here in USA, there are less common muni types that are $40 or less.Turf management is expensive and we have inappropriate tour level expectations. Clubs can be bought used. When I was married three kids on a budget I bought used Titleist and Tommy Armour irons. When I started as a kid, I had a hodge podge set that included a hickory shaft niblick as my PW SW....mid 70s. I could score in 80s with 3 5 7 9 all different and I think ladies woods with taped up hosels. Balls are easily bought $12 -$24 a dozen. Golf is expensive because people with disposable income and time migrate towards pricey venues and modern gear.
  6. Started walking 2 years ago. Bought a 3 wheel cart to take a load off the 60 year old back. Overall goes well. Couple summer days 90def 90humidity and I am whipped. Relatively hilly courses in foothills. I visited a course and tried to walk, it was 300-500 yards between first 3 of 4 holes. That ended quickly.
  7. Three reasons Objective reviews from like minded golfers rather than Amazon or other retail sources of questionable bias or integrity. Just about any topic idea or need is asked and answered. Need help ? The answer is buried somewhere. Entertainment value.
  8. The player focused episodes give an up close and personal that in past was associated with monthly magazines of years ago and NOT common on broadcast TV. There is a shallowness to the content in terms of competitive circumstance. The production crews just can't be in the mix, in the way, a distraction for any player making a run. There is also a rather pedestrian atmosphere exposed surrounding the middle tier tour events.
  9. If you choke down, 3/4 swing, and hit it flush, that should be the swing thought ongoing. I do agree, short irons 8i and up hitting hard isn't as effective. The real question should be am I ok long or short of pin ? If longer is better ,(don't be short), hit 5 instead of 6. If shorter is better, hit your stock club.
  10. I would not confuse swing path flat upright with club heel toe orientation at impact Lie angle is more posture body orientations than flat steep within a range. I could make club really flat add 2" to shaft and moving club head further away and still swing upright. The goal is deliver the club square to path and heel toe flat to ground at a set distance from body based on leg length, back length, arm length. And yes, BAD swing mechanics will have different club fit than better swings. It is just different, trying to give best.outcome given swing type....within reasonable range.
  11. I bought new irons in Aug Sep of 22 so I tested several including 4h. The experiment I am working through now is I brought out my old 70s era musclebacks, put new KBS Tour shafts on and those are my current 9 iron out to 56deg. My old 7 iron had the same loft as current 9i @38deg Old 7 38deg = new 9 150yd Old 8 42deg = new PW 140yd Old 9 46deg = new gap 130yd Old W 52deg = new lob 110yd Old SI 56deg = Sand Iron - maybe 4deg bounce...less than 90 An 85% swing gives sweet results. Consistent distance and I can work the ball a little bit like the good old days. To keep my head screwed on straight I had to buy iron headcovers to help me pull the right club without a decoding ring. There is a ton of sentiment in the irons. Graduation gift from dad, stolen in 80s and took me 15 years to track down a set on ebay. Got lucky and a set of unused heads, never shafted was on UK ebay. I explained to a friend....I would rather shoot 90 with these old irons than 80 with all new gear.... for a little while.
  12. Is it the difference between famiarity with home course and visiting a new course ? And yes, the muscles tighten and the nerves get twitchy in competition
  13. I don't change clubs often.... Titleist tour model irons 20 years Tommy Armour EVO irons about as long as Fred Couples. Gave up after 3 years. Titleist 704cb forged 18 years Ping Anser putter 22 years. Considering move to Scotty Cameron Newport..... I firmly believe it is the archer not the arrows when PROPERLY fitted. Titleist makes it easy to be a better archer !
  14. Ask for volunteers and group accordingly. Those who want to will and those who don't won't. All will enjoy their self determination.
  15. Well done and trusting your swing is a breakthrough hurdle. Brought back memories of my closest encounter with score in 60s. Par would be 69. I three putted from 18ft for a 70.....glad you made yours. Believe me, it does matter. .. 40 years later I am still regretting that 3 putt !
  16. I should have mentioned I used a 3bays putt swing analyzer and it gave a ton of info, majority of time I deloft putts. A real pendulum swing with downward arc and not what I wanted for rolling a ball forward !
  17. As others will note. Heads off driver fairways. Put fairway heads in shoes in travel bag. I travel with 2 pairs shoes. Put golf towels shoes and rain gear around top of bag. Put some irons in upside down if golf bag allows. I've seen long painter's extension pole as stiffener.
  18. I am your twin brother from another mother....Get fitted. For 45 years no lessons and no fittings and previously made it to scratch. Now as a fat old man, I need to make sure I have right tools to keep HI near 10. A fitting doesn't mean buy a new putter. It affirms confirms what your putt stroke tendencies are and verifies if your current putter is a GOOD fit. There are an abundance of arc vs straight putters under $125. If a better fit putter saves only 1 or 2 strokes a round, is it worth $125 ? If the fitting told you the current putter is 100% wrong fit, would you change ? I would. I was just shaft and club fitted for irons first time. Just the right thing to do buying irons that can be modified vs off the shelf. Next up is putter. I am really good. My friends comment complain about my putting. I can read and get pace and line right +90% of time. My misses are bad reads mostly rather than stroke or pace. Fitting won't change that. The only thing left to make my putting better is get fitted. I won't change the head from ping anser old style. All I am willing to do is change shaft and hosel orientations. The putter head will not change. Hopefully fitting will say stick with this. As good as you are going to get for tool vs technique.
  19. I try to give myself two thoughts Pre-swing- firm up the left side (let my left hand arm control the swing 80% of time. Maybe swing through, maybe 3/4 pace (slow down) other 10 and 10 according to swing faults occurring. Immediate Start of swing - load the right side..90% of time...10% it is low and slow. Repetition builds consistency and self trust.
  20. Lot of layers to this. I will stick with mental as much as possible. I won't dwell on why you miss (speed or read or stroke mechanics) or if your misses are big or small. Start with reasonable expectations and build with positive visualizations. Might take a couple months to retrain your brain and a couple years to fully be there. I can make a good putting stroke. I can improve my putting results. All below stats are rounded for simplicity.... If you make 6 of 8 @ 4ft, you are normal. You are not a pro.who makes 7. If you make 2 of 8 @ 8-10ft you are actually good. Pros only make 3 of 8. Beyond 12-15ft, 1 is normal. Pros only make 2 of 10. https://golf.com/instruction/putting/pga-tour-putting-make-percentages-distance/
  21. An ad showed up on golf channel Thursday night....I guess it was prepaid...
  22. I am working with several tour operators on a Scotland 12 day 9 course tour for 10 of us. Here is good bad ugly Pioneer Golf, Morton, Hidden Links Carr, Scottish Links - flexible, responsive, easy to communicate - personal attention Bunch of others....non responsive, lack of follow up, make claims and don't follow through. Unique award to Perry for a build your own trip tool with instant quotes. Who did you have good experience RECENTLY ?
  23. They show up in my facebook ad news feed often. Not lately.
  24. Yes, std dev has a specific formula. Sample size and othe stuff matters. The challenge is all this forces users and providers and clients to be subject matter experts in statistics which isn't their comfort space. When club brand A is 3.2 yards longer than B we want to declare it better. It feels right. I will add Pepsi lost a lawsuit vs Coke based on std dev.
