Dopds
Just tested the 917 and was really disappointed. While I enjoyed the experience, had great results and hit it good, it was no better than my 915. I had finally got past the high price tag and was really looking for some improvement. The shaft options for a 105 swing speed and for a senior didn't produce anymore distance. Ball speeds, spin rates were all good. I was hitting a mild draw but alas, the fitter didn't recommend I make the witch. Sent from my iPad using MyGolfSpy mobile app
mdumble21
I completely agree with you there. I hit both a 915 & 917 (same shaft - stiff) back-to-back and I found that the 915 was just better in terms of feel, sound (I love to hear a big bang off the clubface) and I didn't see a difference in terms of length and flight off the tee. BIG STU
Yep I love my 915 and the way I have it set up. Honestly it has been the best metal driver I ever owned not so much for distance but as a fairway finder. Golfspy_CG2
I've heard a lot of similar experiences, the 917 not being any better than guys current 915. I will say this. I went to the 917 launch day and was "fit" by the local head pro. He "fit" me into a D2 10.5 regular flex Diamana Red My numbers were no better really than my current XR16 Then I went to an out of town Titleist event and paid for an individual fitting after the event by a full time Titleist fitter. I was fit this time into a 917 D3 9.5 stiff shaft in the Diamana Red. And I gained On average 14 yards over the the previous fitting. And this was actually after a round of 18 holes walking so I was even a bit tired. To me it shows the importance of getting properly fit for this club. I know you can say that Bijt any driver. But with so many options and settings. It can really make a difference. The big thing he worked on was lowering my spin with the D2 and my XR my spin was in the high 3000 to low 4000 and killing my distance. The combination of the D3 head on 9.5 and stiffer shaft brought my spin down to the mid to high 2000's Any way just thought I'd throw this out there to say anyone trying this club really owes it to their self to get fit by a knowledge fitter if possible before making any final decisions. Dopds
Thanks for your comments. In February I am traveling to the Titleist Institute in California and I am going to be fitted by the Titleist people themselves. I will update everyone when I return. Dopds
Well the testing in Oceanside, California was everything I wanted it to be. I learned so much and would recommend it to anyone. I went there swinging a 915 D2 driver 10.5 degree set to 11.25 with a regular shaft. After working with a Titleist fitter, I now have on order a 917 D2 8.5 set to 9.25 with a 16 gram draw weight. I always fought a lower ball flight and knew my right shoulder was too on plane and I wasn't hitting up enough. When I started I was hitting 5 degrees down and we worked that to about 1 degree. With the 8.5 hitting down the top of the club face comes more in contact with the ball. My spin rates drop from 3500 to 2400 and I received over 20 yards of carry. The shaft that I chose is Project X HZRDUS Black 65 (6). I always questioned my regular shaft in my 915 but a past golf store recommended it. The Titleist fitter showed me that I was losing a great deal with an erratic dispersion rate, too much spin and a loss of distance and that my 105 swing speed better suited a stiff shaft. I can't wait until spring and the arrival of my new club. Sent from my iPad using MyGolfSpy
KB McCool
Try either of the Epic models as they hit a lot further and with less dispersion for me than the Titleist.. plus Callaway has a better warr...
Dopds
My dispersion was tight with the Titleist, and I love the feel. Sent from my iPad using MyGolfSpy
