Shankster
I've been sitting on this one for a while. The military branches have an "inter mural" golf team. I am going to try to make the cut. Follow in Arnie's footsteps a bit. First I have to prove myself, on the course. I don't want to buy a membership at the local course, but I have to provide a USGA handicap index. I'm not sure what they'll take as far as handicap, but I will be putting some heavy practice time in. I'll keep you posted on my progress, and obviously if I get selected. I have a few questions: 1. How can I get a handicap card? I use an app to track currently. 2. Have to have it established by 1 August. 3. Any tips for preparing for such an event? Thanks! - Alan

4Left
I heard about The Grint which can help you with question 1: keep a legit handicap without joining a club. http://www.thegrint.com/range/2013/04/official-usga-golf-handicap/

downlowkey
Golf Association of Michigan probably also provides a handicap option (with some additional perks) for ~$40.00 Listing a "home club" is probably part of GAM's application process but you should be able to just select a nearby course without being an official member of the men's club at the facility. I think the USGA will issue an initial index after you have entered (5) 18-hole rounds. Best of luck snagging a roster spot on the team! Shankster
Going to try to slow down, be more concentrated during this prep time. I rush myself and end up hitting poor shots. Hopefully I can get down to 2-3 and improve on that. Just have to take the dumb choices out of the bag. I only get in real trouble once and a while, most of the time it's me trying something I don't practice. I'm working on a practice plan. I'll post it up when I'm done with it. And I'm gonna have to brush up on the rules a bit. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

Shankster
Preparation H.ow To Make The Team So here's what I came up with for my preparation regimen. Might add light weights and more "functional" workouts. And I might try to hit up the short game area at the course by my work during lunch a few times a week. Planning on playing Sweet Grass, Arcadia Bluffs, Dunmaglaus, and Belvedere Course as "prep" courses with my dad a few times before August 1st. downlowkey
Sticking to that serious regimen is going to have you fit and flexible with a dialed in short game. I would personally change the long Sunday run to a long row (or maybe even rest) because when you count the Saturday round, it's a heavy leg set up Fri-Mon and my knees would be killing me. The personal commitment alone would make you a welcome member of any team I was putting together. My short game is my best part of my game aside from putting, I don't have the right tools for the trade, but that's about to change. I probably hit 100, 40-75 yard wedge shots during the week in my yard. If I can get in that range I'm a dead eye. Decided to pull my 60° and going with a 53° and 57° wedge set up. The long irons were coming along pretty well last year. First round of the year was promising, except the wind, so it was hard to really judge ball flight. A range membership is only $150 so I'm just going to have them leave a bucket out each morning for me. Might play the 1st or 9th hole after the range, short dogleg left par 4 (289, I can usually get there off the tee, but I'll hit a 7 iron out to get an approach), and a 589 yard par 5 9th, great for approach shots l, it's dead straight. - Alan
