Incorrect ruling

Iin a stroke play tournament at my club...I asked the Pro and assistant pro for a ruling on whether or not incurred a penalty for an action involving a loose impediment. They both said yes and that my action resulted in a 2 stroke penalty. It turns out, they were incorrect in their ruling which we discovered after I had signed my card and submitted. Now I'm not disqualified, because the score I put down was higher that my actual score...however, my score was 2 strokes higher than it should have been. Is their anything in the equity rules that would allow for a correction? Or is it ultimately my responsibility to assign the proper score according to the rules? (I believe it's the latter). Thanks!

I would think if they assigned the penalty they could retract it. I can tell you from experience the best way to deal with a ruling decision at the club level is to lookup the rule and pertinent decision before meeting with the committee as they mostly don't know the answer and have to go looking for it themselves. If you've already got it spelled it you don't even really need them other than to notify them of the occurrence

It's always your responsibility to see that the scores are correct for each hole. Even if your opponent is recording your scores and you're recording his for instance. It's also the committee's responsibility to add the numbers correctly. Even if you add up your card and sign it; the committee should add it up too and if your math is found to be incorrect they will change it. No penalty.

What specifically was the rule you breached involving loose impediment? Describe please.

Also, when in doubt play two balls on the remainder of the hole and from the time you suspect a rule issue. Record both scores. Then seek a ruling after the round and before signing. I also concur with gaussman1.

I agree with PlaidJacket. Definitely play two balls. But, in that situation, I'm sure I also would have trusted the two "pros." If they gave you wrong information, it should be there fault, and they should remove the penalty.

First of all, those guys should know their stuff or at least how to use a rule book and the USGA website. Second, if there is ever a doubt you play two balls through the hole and make a decision after the round. If there was an error, it should have been caught man.
