I should have noted that in all of those photos, the balls are traveling from right to left. I didn't think about that until now. OOPS!

So yeah, it is angled towards the back for me as a lefty. The dot should change when you switch from righty to lefty, so that it's always "behind"

Outdoor Range Session #1 (9/14/24)

I know a lot of people in this thread are curious about outdoor use for the Skytrak+. Well as I awaited the rest of my indoor materials to set up the sim, I decided to take the Skytrak+ out to my local range to see how it would perform. It was a 78-degree day barely a cloud in the sky (at least overhead) and around 1PM. The main reason I included the time is because of the position of the very bright sun to see how it would affect the unit and reading shots. Just a couple notes, I was hitting off the mats and using range balls, 2 factors that may have contributed to a couple misreads.

I decided to forgo the protective case on this session, so I was sure put it on the mat at the same level at the ball. I have to say I was extremely impressed with how easy it was to pick up the red dot in the bright sun. I used my iPhone 15 pro as the visual device. Unfortunately, because of that, the dot disappeared when I tried to take a photo using my phone. While having a larger tablet is definitely going to be the way to go for the larger visuals the phone worked just fine. The IOS app worked flawlessly for the hour and half or, so I was at the range as well. I was pleasantly surprised how easy the set up was. I should note it was a last-minute decision and I forgot to set up an account and it wouldn't let me create one off a network (might be user error here). Nonetheless I was able to use the app as a guest and have a full session.

The exports of all shots are really easy and provide all of the relevant information we come to expect from a premium launch monitor. Shots are easy to delete when you really mess one up, don't lie we all do! I appreciate that the data is clearly organized by club and gives averages for each grouping. The UI is very easy to flip between the practice mode and the summary charts as well.

Now I did have a couple misreads. I had a nasty low duck hook with my 3-wood and it registered as a slice. funny enough I recreated the same exact shot on the next one, totally on purpose too! (just kidding my 3-wood and I just don't get along currently).

Misread: ball went left:

Correct read (very next shot):

All in all, I am very impressed with how easy the Skytrak+ is to setup and use on the fly. Given all of the extra variables from an outdoor session only having 2-3 misreads or non-reads was better than I expected especially for my first use. I am very excited to get it setup indoors and really dive into all its features. Hopefully you made it this far for this very lengthy first test session, much more to come!

Absolutely! I think there are tiers where we’d expect a couple from time to time on the Trackmans and those alike. Then at the other end you expect more with lower level unit in the $500-$700 range. Nice to know that that the Skytrak is so far performing close to that top tier.

Skytrak is looking more and more like my retirement gift to me next year!

Well, I finally got set up indoors with the net, mat, and PC.

The indoor swing syndrome was in full effect and I couldn’t get confident to take a full swing with my 7 or 9 iron. With practice this will get better, though.

IMG_6462.gif.b0e15d63170af5b36f8ae2154dc54718.gif

Unfortunately, this wasn’t my biggest problem of the night. I was having a little bit of trouble registering and setting up the account as well as some latency issues with the PC. Not sure if it was due to the wireless connection, the monitor, or the PC itself. I double checked all of the specs (which meet and exceed all of the recommendations from Skytrak) and everything runs as it should. I also tried the unit on all 3 connection types (direct, network, USB). I’m scratching my head a little bit but I am going to start the process of elimination by hard wiring the PC to the router for a better connection to see if that solves the issue. Hoping it’s something as simple as that and not a parts upgrade.

NOTE: I’m sure this is user error and in no way the Skytrak’s fault. Just something I am experiencing at the moment.

I will say the IOS app runs flawlessly. I tried my phone again as well as an iPad my father in law let me borrow. I honestly think for the range feature the iPad is the way to go. As @TSauer has said previously the set up is super simple and fast. It does everything you need and has a nice picture, with only a slight second delay from shot to visual output.

I am hopeful I can keep playing around with the PC setup to get it to work as well as the other visual devices I’ve tried. More to come in the coming days!

Good info, wonder if the computer has too many programs running the the background…

Lol I am really hoping I don’t need to open it up Luckily I sit right behind the head of IT at work and have a couple of open favors from him if any upgrades are needed. I’ll start with the network hardwire and go from there. I really don’t think the monitor would be the issue and it’s a pretty standard monitor with a middle ground of 100hz refresh rate.

i tried to mess with the setting but the graphics were already on the lowest setting so i assumed bumping them up high would worsen the problem. Thanks for the recommendation though!

Cash in one of those favors and get that thing running like a racehorse.

I currently have an RTX 3060 Ti. I think after talking with a couple folks I found the potential issues. The PC was reset, and I think the graphics card drivers need to be updated from Nvidia. I'm also going to move the application from the hard drive to the SSD just to be safe and double check the output slot for the monitor I was using was off the graphics card and not the motherboard.

I'll be the first to admit I am not a pro at the custom PC stuff, but I am learning as I go! The PC was also built by someone other than me, so I need to learn the ins and outs of it to make sure I'm not missing anything. I definitely think the issues I had last night were user error and not the PC or the Skytrak.

All this computer insight is great for a guy like me that has NOOOOOO idea about technical mumbo-jumbo

Oooh, now that's an idea! I'm down for that for sure. Once I get everything set back up after the bday, we'll get something scheduled. 🤝

Now THAT would be very interesting!  Can’t wait for an update on the process, play, interaction of machines, and results.  Should be a barn-burner of a match as well!!!  Where can we place bets???

Good news! I’m apparently PC illiterate and plugged the monitor into the wrong HDMI port that was for the native graphics card and not the Nvidia 3060. Once I plugged it in it ran flawlessly. Moving the application to the SSD helped, too.

Now once things were up and running I ran into an issue where i couldn’t log into the practice range. Finally I called Skytrak’s customer service line and was met with a real person who immediately knew the issue (clear the cache) and helped to remote in an do it for me. He even had some other tips and tricks for the connection modes which was great. Overall an A+ for customer service on my end so far!

Sweet!  Nothing beats talking to a human on the phone from the very company that made the product, not a phone bank from who knows where and then to get great customer service?  well, THAT'S a winner in my book.

Got the unit connected to the PC today and I'm amazed at how much of a breeze it was. Connected it wirelessly and was up and running in a matter of minutes.. pretty amazing, honestly. I had planned on playing a course, but I guess that's something that isn't available with the essentials membership.

Anyway, I will have more of a detailed write-up tomorrow on the short game wedge session.

Love this thing!

Do you have any idea what the pricing is on the course packaging and which ones are available?

The essential plan is $130/year, the course add on package is $220/year which includes 30 courses from Skytrak. There’s an E6 course add on package for $120/year. This has around 20 courses but is limited to stroke play only.

I certainly plan on upgrading to the course play package thru Skytrak. They have a lot courses like Pebble Beach and Quail Hallow

I played the practice games with the targets/points and it was a lot of fun to work on shots between 30 -> 150 yards. I could see this being a cool thing to do with some buddies if you didn't have the access to the courses.

Those are really cool! I was going to try one of those out, but just went to the range and changed the green distance and messed around with some wedges.

Did you happen to see the other practice ranges they had? I was connected directly to the SkyTrak so I didn't have internet access to download them when I stumbled upon them, but they seem pretty cool. I wasn't sure if you got a chance to try any of those out yet or not. I think I'll check out the city range and see how many vehicles I can hit 😂

I did seem them! I was in the same boat as you but more constrained around time. I'll probably spend a night downloading the ones I want all at once, so they are available when I go to use it next. As a fader of the ball the right to left command range piqued my interest to work on hitting controlled draws.

The Skytrak has so much to offer just in the essential plan, it's incredible!

Turns out the day after a birthday party is not as relaxing as one might think. Lots of cleaning up, opening toys, gathering batteries, finding space to put said toys.. I'm sure y'all know the drill. Nonetheless, the garage was cleared and the sim got set back up.

Initially, since I set up the TV and my PC in the garage for the day, I wanted to dive into the course section and test out the graphics. Quail Hollow was looking juicy..

That was until I remembered that course play wasn't a part of the essentials trial and I shed a tear. All good though, I plan on getting the add-on to play the courses, but for now I will enjoy the range and the mini games that are included! So, I decided to jump back into the range and get a closer look at the numbers, since this is something I'll primarily be doing throughout the season to get a better understanding of my bag.

THE NUMBERS MASON, WHAT DO THEY MEAN?!!

For me, especially at my local course, short game is key! Since that is where I primarily play, I really want to focus on wedges and short game when I have the time and take advantage of all the tools the ST+ has to offer. The easiest way for me to do that was jumping to the range. There are mini game and other challenges to take part in, but for this quick test I wanted to just use the range. There are quite a few settings you can change while on the range, including the type of range you want to use or the type of practice you're looking to do.

One thing I noticed, unless I missed something somewhere, is that the altitude changes each time the device is powered off/on. I remember changing it during my first session, just to tinker, and noticed it reset back to 500. Nothing crazy, just worth noting in case you crank it up to 7,000 to feel a little better about your drives... I definitely need that some days. I haven't messed with too many things in there, as I like where it's at straight out of the box. The graphics option does have an auto feature that runs a quick benchmark and determines what your PC is capable of and sets your graphics accordingly, which is nice. Anyway, back to wedge things. Out of the three green options, I chose the easy one and set it at 55 yards for this purpose. I will definitely do some experimenting with the harder greens, maybe add some strong wind and slope the green, if possible... yano, so I can really hate myself after a practice session. 😂

My buddy has the GC3 and I remember being able to see all of the data after your session and compare each and every shot, so that's what I was wanting to look at. Not necessarily wanting to dial things in, but just wanted to see how the system worked. So, a handful of shots with a 54* and another handful of shots with the 58*.

Just like most other sims, you can go through after each shot and delete all the ugly ones that make you look bad.. just kidding. But, you're able to see a brief overview of everything and and then eventually export those to a PDF. I foresee myself spending a lot of times looking at these screens and those PDF files and hopefully learn everything there is to learn about those numbers. The exporting was super simple, just a couple of clicks and it's saved. I can't wait to print them out and pin them to my fridge. 😅

Also, forgot to add... when I hooked it up to the PC, it was through Wi-Fi and there were no issues. Now, there isn't a ton of distance between my router and my PC in the garage, but the setup was just as easy as the first time I set it up with my iPad and I didn't experience any sort of lag, which is great!

Impressive, like the amount of info on the spread sheet.  Do those numbers seem accurate to what you thought each shot would be?

Well.... I've never been actually been fit before so I don't know what my numbers typically are when it comes to spin, angles, etc. The distances felt pretty spot on, at least for my chipping. When hitting irons, they seem a little short, but that could be because I'm swinging indoors and indoor swing syndrome is very much a thing. I'll know more once I get the unit outside.

Maybe I am just really that weak and need to eat my Wheaties.

Having used the Skytrak+ indoors and outdoors the ISS (Indoor Swing Sydrome) is DEFINTIELY real. I was hitting my 7 iron on 193 yards carry on average outdoors off a mat. Indoors that number was drastically reduced to around 168 yards carry on average. On course my 7 iron is typically my 185 club. Meaning I will fly it around 180 with 5 yards of release.

I believe the Skytrak is accurate and when outside I was a little juiced up excited to test it out couple with hitting off range mats (tends to always add distance with reduced spin), and when I went inside for the first time, I was very timid to take full swings. As far as accuracy numbers I think that it will get closer to that middle ground as the test goes on.

I think the biggest disparity I've seen is in the spin numbers. I really want to try and go to a course and hit a couple shots from the fairway to see if I can get it to register with a normal ball and off a fairway lie.

You and I are about the same then when it comes to distances. I have been hitting my 7 iron a lot on the sim and my average carry tends to be around 160ish, when in reality it's like yours and around 180 or so. I'm glad I'm not alone on this. I know even when I used the GC3 in a much larger area than what I'm in now, it took a while before I could get over ISS.

If the rain slows down this week, I'll get the unit outside and see how she fares. I'm sure I'll be much more happy with those numbers.

I'm just passing along the info I got. I can't speak to how well it will work on a Mac as I'm not a Mac user but based on my experience with their other versions released I'm assuming it's been well tested. I will say that they didn't release a version for Mac until they released ver 5.1 which means they've likely worked out all the bugs from the major 5.0 release.

I too found my numbers to be shorter than normal even with my elevation set properly. I'm sitting at a mile high (5280') elevation but I had to raise my elevation to 6500 to get more accurate results and I think even those tend to be a bit on the low side.

Have either of you guys used the randomizer? It's a great practice tool that allows you to use all your clubs and not just bang one club the whole time.

I haven’t used it but like the idea of it. I think I’m limited to about a 6 iron in my garage but plan to pull the net in the backyard to hit the longer clubs (especially driver) in the next couple days

9/28 range session

I was able to get some solid hits in the other night mainly with my 9-iron. I'm getting more comfortable swinging inside the garage and was able to get some similar number I see out on the course. This is promising as I think it's been hard to fully commit to the swing and it's shown on the average distance. I do notice on average the total distance tends to be more accurate for my carry. I believe the reason for this is the low amount of spin the Skytrak is generating. I can hold greens on a various number of shots so I'm wondering if the mat is causing the variance in spin. I will say I have noticed more consistent ball striking and shot shapes as the testing has progressed both during practice and on the course. This is a true testament to the power of practice and having this level of feedback available at your fingertips.

I gave the City range a try as well and again kept with the 9-iron distance of 155. I noticed I was able to hold the green on this range and the spin was reflective of a normal shot on course.

I have to say I am extremely impressed with the post session data that the Skytrak has to offer. Full report outs and Plot points with side and overhead views with dispersion circles is huge for the data nuts out there. That's me I am data nut

To cap off this session I tried out the closest to the pin challenge with my 58° wedge at 50 yards. I think this is going to be a really good practice drill as I have a weak point of my game between 40-80 yards. I will also be setting up the wedge matrix hopefully soon to get a good setup for next season, darn you northeast!

Wedges and Irons have been great with the Skytrak! I tried driver out today but had to pull my setup outside and had some not-so-great results. I believe this was user error, but I'll have a separate update that hopefully tomorrow!

I wonder if I'll have one of those aforementioned "full blown sim setups" by the time this is all said and done....  🤔

Just noticed this as found it funny... I have plans for a new shed/detached garaged in progress. Once the test was announced I re-did the drawings with 10ft walls and a higher pitch for cathedral type ceilings. Basically, I decided to make enough room for a full-blown sim bay at the house. planning to break ground next spring/early summer to have it set for winter 2026!
